Cannot find anything on . Learned this term at a water quality meeting. Did not know that treating water with chlorine or would cause byproducts that can cause cancer. Also known as .

"Disinfection by-products (DBPs), also called , are formed when chlorine and bromine interact with natural organic materials in water, such as in chlorinated drinking water and chlorine-treated swimming pools."

Anniversary blog post from May 13, 2009:

It's one thing for an individual to be able to live car-free. It's another thing for an entire municipality to exist without cars. There are actually four necessary conditions:

• Car-free existence within the municipality
• Residents can function car-free outside the municipality
• Critical mass of car-free individuals
• Car-free community structure

Spoiler: the New York Times's #urbanism "experts" get them confused.

@capntransit This has relevance to my spouse and mine's desire to go to Planting Fields Arboretum on LI which is a NYS Park. Nearest train station is a Oyster Bay. The most independent way to get there is to walk. Only 1.5 miles, but there aren't any sidewalks and website doesn't suggest a shuttle or taxi. Will be calling them. They are legally discriminating against people who do not own cars, but illegally discriminating against disabled people who cannot drive.

I give up. Crowd sourcing time. What's the name of that lookup site that lists traffic violations by plate number?

@stefan Most definitely. Adding a contact so brain farts prevent me from remembering.

This building next to the 125th Street Station in Manhattan went up fast. I remember when there was a drive in burger place here. Unfortunately, Columbia.

Another view of the building at 125th.

@capntransit I never ate there. I may have used the bathroom. I know I walked through the parking lot on my way to West Harlem Piers. It seemed so suburban and weird to stick a MacDonald's in Manhattan.

Learned lesson to always use even if a cop is there to talk to. Told pair of cops in SUV from precinct about a car with obscured license plates. They ignored me and didn't ticket the car. Later when I filed a 311, the response was that the car was no longer there.

Silver Ford Explorer with covered obscured NJ license plate. Its illegal to have a covered license plate in NJ.

Just got an email asking me to sign a petition to support funding the Baltimore bridge repair.

Re: Republicans in Congress are blocking funds for the Baltimore bridge repair. Will you sign the petition to demand emergency funding NOW?

Maybe it should be a skinny tunnel. Will it have protected bike lanes?

I hadn't visited @OpenInfraMap in a while: it's a pretty impressive custom rendering of power and telecommunication infrastructure in OpenStreetMap.

If you need something new to map in OpenStreetMap, looks like lots of neighborhoods still need to have their power poles mapped! 😳

Have also never seen this and it is amazing. Is there a list of all such views that pull their data from OSM?

a beautiful day for riding around until I found a storm drain to report for cleaning.

Iragersh,
@Iragersh@mstdn.social avatar

@enobacon How does one make that report?

Iragersh,
@Iragersh@mstdn.social avatar

@enobacon I ask because its different everywhere. NYC has a 311 app. Once can also text, use Xittr or call or use a brower. I've been asked to call this sanitation supervisor directly which I do and stuff happens.

While car-free earth day 2024 in NYC is terribly underwhelming at least Dyckman Street gets a few things I'm interested in which I'm missing for the Bronx River Slow Roll and Green Infrastructure Tour.

Dyckman Street from Broadway to La Marina, Manhattan. That's it???

Oy. Where to start? Was just on a Bronx CB6 Transpo Committee zoom where someone who I couldn't understand regaled us about the Cross Bronx Expressway 5 Bridge Rehab project. There were slides which I cannot find. This is the main project website https://www.dot.ny.gov/portal/pls/portal/MEXIS_APP.DYN_PROJECT_DETAILS.show?p_arg_names=p_pin&p_arg_values=X72707 . There's a link to another website that purports to have more info but I just get a 404 error. This link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSbh-j15B_A from the is better. Began the meeting angry and now just incredulous.

The hubris of the NYS DOT is incredible. The only true thing they said was that the bridges are falling apart. Let them. The presenter tried to present the project as something helping the Bronx. Hah!

First link has a list of electeds to harangue. Supposedly this project passed environmental review (). Hah! and have proven time and time again to be worthless and misleading. This is no exception.

We'd so benefit by smart meters but they will never happen because the money would go into a central fund and never benefit the local area. Must be happy with elimination of . NY1 frames this as "vandals have been uprooting newly planted trees and digging deep paths in their place. Community leaders suspect the paths are for mountain bike tracks."

But this is a fairly straightforward case of passive vs. active recreation, and over half the space for active recreation in Kissena Park is dedicated to golf.

And what kind of "community leader" doesn't know the mountain bikers in their community?

https://ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/news/2024/04/12/queens-leaders--volunteers-ask-public-to-help-catch-kissena-park-vandals

Iragersh,
@Iragersh@mstdn.social avatar

@capntransit Those vandals could not in their dreams approach the damage done by golf. And then there's also the annual damage done by the ballfields. I left this comment: "Thanks for posting the photos. The pulling of trees is horrendous. I too am someone who plants trees, but have to say that the annual damage of the golf course and the ball fields far outweighs any damage done by the vandals."

Got invited to this Riverkeeper meeting in Ossining. Planning to take the Hudson line and then either walk or bike the Old Croton Aqueduct from a little out from the Ossining station. says the path surface is dirt. The meeting is April 25 so it could be muddy.. is totally useless. If a car can't drive it, they don't fucking care and the path may as well not exist. With OpenStreetMaps I can make a notation as to condition.

Iragersh,
@Iragersh@mstdn.social avatar

@evannakita I have not been on that ferry, but will add it so I am one day. I thought I took a photo of the Riverkeeper building but I didn't. Its not much. Just a low lying red building near the train station. It was June 25, 2022 when I was there. I think it was a Sunday and I knew the office would be closed.

Riverkeeper boat. Apparently out of commission this year. A boat tied up to a floating dock.

Iragersh,
@Iragersh@mstdn.social avatar

@capntransit @evannakita Will have to think about Scarborough. Was thinking of just getting off at Ossining. The meeting is at The Center at Mariandale, 299 N Highland Ave, Ossining, NY 10562. Its only a 36 minute walk assuming I don't get waylaid by something of interest and a 13 minute bike. Its nice having a bike in Ossining.

Iragersh,
@Iragersh@mstdn.social avatar

@capntransit @evannakita Yes. If the OCA is muddy the road is my fallback. says the OCA surface is dirt. Who knows? I was in Highbridge Park last weekend after a lot of rain and it was not muddy at all I think because Parks had put down wood chips on the path. There is no choice for wood chips in the iD OSM editor.

Iragersh,
@Iragersh@mstdn.social avatar

@capntransit @evannakita Your map is weird. Mine shows Ossining very differently with the Riverkeeper office right nearby which I know it is as I walked past it a few years ago.

Iragersh,
@Iragersh@mstdn.social avatar

@capntransit @evannakita More reason to have a bike. I thought it odd that there was no building at that point. Its just the end of their driveway!
