1.2+ million downloads and a rating of 4.2 – a good indicator for a safe app in Google's ? One should think so – until one takes a look at its (46, including access to quite personal data) and the number of KNOWN reports (28!!).

Just wow. Had to add that one to my app lists, as a warning example.

You've read about F-Droid's recently? Now, the repo makes use of that implementation. How, you ask?

Well: part of the process is to compare APKs and make sure they carry the signature of their authors. That's done by fdroidserver whenever the YAML file of an app has "AllowedAPKSigningKeys:" defined. APKs with not-matching signatures are rejected. That's used by my repo now to make sure updates are "legit" (and not placed to the repo by a malicious actor). (1/4)

IzzyOnDroid,
@IzzyOnDroid@floss.social avatar

So whenever my updater fetches an APK from its Codeberg/GitLab/Github/… repo, fdroidserver will now validate it was really signed with the key of the author. If not, it won't be published, but I'd receive an alert by mail to investigate.

So the plus for the authors: I will inform them – and of course ask what happened. Usually it's just that the authors lost their signing keys, which is really bad: it means that you have to uninstall and re-install the app to get the latest version(s)! (2/4)

IzzyOnDroid,
@IzzyOnDroid@floss.social avatar

During the process of updating the metadata, I discovered that 26 of the 1105 apps checked encountered that issue: the signing keys were changed. That makes 2.35% of the apps checked. Not good! Hence: (3/4)

IzzyOnDroid,
@IzzyOnDroid@floss.social avatar

Dear , take good care of your keys! Watch them like your crown jewels! Don't let them get into the wrong hands!

NO! Do NOT upload them to Github/GitLab etc. Have a good (encrypted!) backup of them – not on the disk of your development machine, but elsewhere. So should your machine crash, you'll still have them. Your code is in your repo, your keys are in a safe place – then you and those using your apps are fine! (4/4)

Und ja, tolle Technik. Will ja jetzt nicht unken, aber wahrscheinlich aus Frameworks zusammen geklickt, und nicht alle "Hintergrund-Prozesse" im Blick gehabt (oder verstanden)…

@georgetakei 😢 I still can't tell who "she" is, or what you refer to – as you still use link shorteners I cannot follow 😢

I really loved to follow your witty toots. Learned a lot about your country through them. Love your humor, the way you see and show things. Appreciate your sharing, have the deepest respect – but since you started replacing the "real links" by bit.ly, I don't get any of that anymore. Please, will you?

How quickly he forgets. https://bit.ly/3rZFo1H

IzzyOnDroid,
@IzzyOnDroid@floss.social avatar

@georgetakei Could you please use "normal links" again, as you did before? There's no need to use link shorteners on the Fediverse, each link is counted as 23 chars regardless of its length. And seeing the original link it's transparent where it points to – count it as "security feature" 😉

Which btw is why some of us won't klick bit.ly links 😮

Thanks a lot! We love to read your posts 😍

@aral fuck walled gardens.
fuck intransparency.

(I'm currently adding "AntiFeature reasons" to F-Droid apps having AntiFeatures such as NonFreeNet to make clear why. Currently running: Batch 19. Next build cycle will lift the latest F-Droid client to "recommended"; that one is already available and able to display those reasons. I'd say "try it out", but it's Android and you're on iOS 😉)

IzzyOnDroid,
@IzzyOnDroid@floss.social avatar

@aral Then you might wish to have a look after the second-to-next index is pushed (I expect that early next week) to see it in action. I'm still in the process of adding those details to the apps' metadata (about 250 have it by now, guess it's about 100 more with my current batches). For an early view without app, you can always use my repo browser at https://apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid – AntiFeature reasons are in effect for my repo (fully) and F-Droid's (partly, working on it). Select repo via drop-down 😉

    💡Want to see stats of your account? Check out https://mastometrics.com/. It will tell you who you interact with the most, who of your followers has the biggest reach etc.

    ⚠️ Note that you give the service a read access to your account. I don't mind since I consider everything I write here public, but you might.

    @sesivany and if you mind, you can do that locally on your computer. Check out https://github.com/kensanata/mastodon-archive – you will have a backup of all your stuff locally then(I have a cron job running syncing it once per our), and can let it generate stats based on that. Or a local static HTML. And more :awesome:

    What was the first distribution you installed / attempted to install?

    For me - a Debian user - it was gentoo, around 2003, which was a mistake.

    IzzyOnDroid,
    @IzzyOnDroid@floss.social avatar

    @neil Debian in around '93. Had a quick look at Caldera Linux around '95/96 (while running OS/2 on my "main drivers"), then went a good circle via SuSE (2000) => Ubuntu (2005) => Mint (with the 2014 "Amazon disaster" of Ubuntu my trust in them was gone), today sticking with the latter for my desktop machines – and am back to Debian on the servers. Oh, and Raspian on the "pocket-sized servers" 😉

    @ayoprez That depends on so many criteria that an "average" is not really helpful: How complete are the data provided, are all inclusion criteria met, is it easy to build (some stuff simply cannot be build because of missing libre/cli build tools), when does a team member find time to process it…

    In an ideal case, it can be done within a week. 2-4 weeks are more likely, more than a month is not uncommon – and some inclusion requests (luckily few) can take a year or more 😱

    Ich brauche eine Einschätzung von einer größeren Bubble als mir selbst.

    Ist es ernsthaft üblich, für ein Interview zu bezahlen, das explizit als Fachartikel in einer Zeitschrift veröffentlicht wird? Natürlich habe ich als Experte ein wirtschaftliches Interesse an einem Interview. Dennoch macht es einen Unterschied, ob ich den Autor dafür bezahle, dass er meine Meinung veröffentlicht.

    Das finde ich super unseriös. Wer ein Interview mit mir will, soll sich das Geld dafür woanders besorgen.

    IzzyOnDroid,
    @IzzyOnDroid@floss.social avatar

    @weddige Ich würde sagen: Du sollst Zeit investieren, damit sie ein Interview drucken können – dafür solltest Du auch bezahlt werden Auf der anderen Seite hast Du auch etwas davon – also zahlst Du das Honorar zurück (kannst Du ja als "Werbekosten" abbuchen).

    Win-Win, oder? Also Du zahlst unterm Strich nix. Und das wäre Entgegenkommen Deinerseits.

    Anders sähe es aus, wenn Du die Schaltung von Werbung beauftragen würdest. Aber Fachartikel? Nope, das ist unseriös.
