The thing that's so amazing to me about Apple, is that they really really put "design" (in the broad sense) at the center of everything they do. And have been doing even more so over the years. Nobody else even remotely does it similarly.

Like "here I am with my phone on the couch, what exactly do I want to do now, how do I think about it, and what are the fewest and most natural steps to accomplish what I want to do, like watch a movie with my remote friends on the big TV?"

Hey out there:

Since Bostrom's "we are most likely living in a because with good enough tech there are far more simulations than reality" argument and hullabaloo some years ago, have there been any further significant arguments in that direction?

Wikipedia only has some attempts at refutation of that argument. Or has simply nobody pursued this line of thinking in some significant way?

There's those countries and regimes that accept their history, including all the terrible stuff, and those that try to hide or deny it.

Among other things, trying to hide it speaks of terrible insecurity. Your people don't love you any more if they find out? What about instead, you work on being such a good government that people love you even as they know, because you're so working hard that bad stuff will never happen again?

but also certain places in US

Interesting survey numbers on LGBT+ equality and lack thereof globally. The acceptance numbers are generally higher than I would have thought.

“Dangers of woke” is clearly a political strategy that would not work if it relied on getting a democratic majority. That in itself tells you something.

An error message would be nice, dear git, instead of just hanging.

git config --global http.postBuffer <higher-value> did it.

People will look back and realize OpenAi had the competitive advantage of crawling the web to train their AI before publishers realized what was going on.

Reddit & Twitter raising their API prices to tens or hundreds of thousands for basic access is just the beginning.

Somebody is making sense about the real dangers of ! I completely agree -- I'm not worried about electronic overlords any time soon, but I am very worried about new human overlords (hiding behind the supposed threat of electronic overlords.)

And I would add I'm also worried about clueless people applying hallucinating tech to important things -- sooner or later somebody is going to hook up GPT4 to, well, why not a nuclear power plant. And then we're in for a ride.

@pyperkub I'm in favor of all progress in that direction, even if it is only small steps at a time.

(P.S. There are a few bugs I'd really like to fix in my car's firmware, they are annoying enough I might actually do it if I could.)

@ShadSterling @pyperkub @TechConnectify Big difference between core driving software — like engine control, abs etc — and say, media related software. I wouldn’t be interested in touching the former, but I sure want to stop my car from sometimes randomly (to me)switching on the radio. Probably runs on very different hardware in most cases anyway.

How do I get rid of the terrible Google popups on all kinds of websites to log in with the Google account that I would never use to log into other websites?

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@ntnsndr It's a side effect of new regulations like GDPR/CCPA etc. They can't run Google Analytics on you any more unless you are logged in, so they "encourage you" to log in. And if you check the setting on the Google side, that only works if Google is tracking you!

Registered for the next in October -- the premier event for the movers and shakers in digital identity and self-sovereign identity. It is the 37th time!

How many events do you know who have a track record of 37? With more people coming these days than ever before? Wouldn't be surprised if it sold out again because the venue is full.
