If you had a .me personal domain and a .net domain, and your primary domain was the .me, but people occasionally got confused because many still don't know .me is a thing in 2024, would you switch your email and blog-that-probably-will-never-happen over to the .net, or just keep the .me? Obviously this assumes the .me email can stay around and receive mail, and the domain can have a redirect. I don't have strong feelings on this either way, but I figured out the .net was available last year sometime, and have never been sure what I should do with it. I will probably make an email forwarder just in case, and then if I'm having a five minute argument with a Rogers representative I can just fall back to .net to shut them up.

JEkis,

@simon I think in your shoes I would keep everything on .me and just use net for those odd situations. I have ekis.us and occasionally someone gets confused by it. I never thought of checking the availability of .net. I'd like to do it, but I'm already not happy with how much I'm spending annually for something that just feels cool without any extra benefit. $9 for year for the domain and $15 for the email hosting.

JEkis,

@simon We were just comparing our costs for email hosting a few days back. My provider just informed me that my $15 per **year plan will be $4 per month starting later this year. Any suggestions on providers who can give me a lower cost than that? If not this fun little experiment of having a vanity domain just for the hell of it will probably have to end.

The department of justice is finally suing Apple over its smartphone monopoly. This is good. Now Maybe Google, Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus, Asus, and others can have a fair shot. Some day, competitorsmight even have over 40 percent of the market. Oh, wait.

PowerShell is completely and totally awesome. I have this in my profile:
function Get-FileDetails {
param (
[string]$Path = "."
)
Get-ChildItem $Path | ForEach-Object {
$size = $.Length
$sizeSuffix = "bytes"
$sizeInKB = $size / 1KB
$sizeInMB = $size / 1MB
$sizeInGB = $size / 1GB
$sizeInTB = $size / 1TB
if ($sizeInTB -ge 1) {
$size = $sizeInTB
$sizeSuffix = "TB"
}
elseif ($sizeInGB -ge 1) {
$size = $sizeInGB
$sizeSuffix = "GB"
}
elseif ($sizeInMB -ge 1) {
$size = $sizeInMB
$sizeSuffix = "MB"
}
elseif ($sizeInKB -ge 1) {
$size = $sizeInKB
$sizeSuffix = "KB"
}
$
| Select-Object Name, @{Name="Size"; Expression={"{0:N2} $sizeSuffix" -f $size}}
} | Format-Table -AutoSize
}

New-Alias -Name ls -Value Get-FileDetails
New-Alias -Name dir -Value Get-FileDetails
And now, if I ls, I get:

JEkis,

@TheQuinbox Just now seeing your post about PowerShell. Do you know of a way to silence that warning about PSReadline being disabled every time I open a terminal? Googling this just comes up with sighted users upset over screen reader detection triggering incorrectly and wanting their syntax highlighting back.

So many hot takes about how evil generative AI is. I just wonder how many of these people have experienced something like be my AI. Something finally comes along that really has the opportunity to make things considerably better for blind people, and there's this whole segment out there that would like nothing better than to kill it. Makes me pretty sad, to be honest.

I just want to write some code, maybe make some music, maybe draw some pictures.

I don't want to be mad about blockchains, I don't want to be mad about GenAI, I don't want to be mad about terrible backfiring "think of the children" legislation, I don't want to be terrified about the rising tide of bigoted, racist fascism ending democracy in my lifetime.

I don't want you to have to be mad about all that either.

I wish the world would leave us all alone for a little bit.

JEkis,

@glyph I'm preparing to spend a year at a training center that has a program specially designed to help blind people get their A+, network+ and security+ certifications and even assist with job placement. My plan had been to get my sec+ on my own, but now I get to earn 3 certs with a major reduction of ableism.

Putting this out there for anyone else wrestling with issues of self-acceptance. Today is the most satisfied I've been with myself in quite some time. Self-acceptance is an absurdly difficult nut to crack. I still only get these occasional glimpses of it, but that's enough to prove to me that it is eventually going to be well worth the effort. Hang in there. We didn't lose this over night either.

When I first signed up for Mastodon, I remember hearing about something called "The Mastodon Server Covenant." I just got curious about what is included in this, so I looked it up. The first commitment is “Active moderation against racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia." Much to my disappointment, ableism is conspicuously absent from the document. I'm thoroughly bewildered. Why is that not included?

JEkis, to random

Has anyone filed a Github issue on mastodon to remove support for exclusion and discrimination from the code? I'm glad to do it if that hasn't happened yet. HCaptcha has got to go.

Documentation for how to enable hCaptcha support on just dropped: https://docs.joinmastodon.org/admin/optional/captcha/

Many thanks to @vmstan for taking the time to document this functionality!

PLEASE DON'T EXPLAIN hCAPTCHA's PROBLEMS TO ME, IT'S IN THE DOCUMENTATION.

You can contribute to the documentation here: https://github.com/mastodon/documentation/blob/main/content/en/admin/optional/captcha.md

JEkis,

@thisismissem @JonnyT If you want safer open registrations with a large Blind people need not apply sign, yes, it's a good solution for that. Otherwise not so much.

That feeling when a letter from the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation is delivered as a PDF with nothing but a scanned image of the letter with no text at all. Completely inaccessible. It's going to be an interesting ride, apparently.

JEkis,

Following up on my post about the letter from Vocational Rehabilitation, my counselor insists that they have Jaws users in their office who are able to access the document. When I first heard this about 6 hours ago, I assumed that these jaws users were using the OCR features built into newer versions of jaws. It's only now as I'm trying to get to sleep that it hits me. (1/2)

JEkis,

You're telling me that there are blind professionals working for the state propping up the idea that this now counts as acceptable accessibility? Is that where we are now? I just can't, people. I can't. . (2/2)

JEkis,

And yes, I was able to access the document too. I ran it through Voice Dream Scanner. It's just the principle of the thing. A letter from a state agency for the blind should be accessible out of the box. It shouldn't require iffy workarounds such as error-prone OCR. And When I called this out, I got other blind people undermining my argument. It's infuriating. (1/2)

JEkis,

I'm privileged enough to have access to the tools to mitigate this nonsense, but I'm going to keep speaking up for those who may not be able to afford a jaws license or an iPhone. if it isn't accessible to everyone, it isn't accessible. (2/2)

Every time I pull out my BrailleNote Touch Plus, I'm reminded of how pitifully stagnated blindness-related products are compared to mainstream systems. Turns out I can no longer install Box because HumanWare has backed themselves into a corner and will not be updating past Android 8.1. This would not be a big deal... except for the fact that it's the only display I have at the moment, and literally every BRF file I need at Eastman is stored in Box. Way to keep up with the times, guys. /s

@mastoblind @main

JEkis,

@NoahCarver @mastoblind @main That really sucks. It's totally inexcusable for the device to be stuck on such an old version. You shouldn't need such workarounds, but is it possible to sideload apps from APK files? One of those third party APK sites might have an older version that supports your OS.

simon, to accessibility

I've lost all hope of HCaptcha being a company that cares about accessibility.
I had major trouble getting the accessibility cookie to work in Firefox yesterday, though I eventually solved it by disabling both Privacy Badger and the enhanced tracking protection built into Firefox.
So I e-mailed the company with an accessibility inquiry. I suggested that when requesting an accessibility cookie by e-mail, the user should also be given a code they can enter into the HCaptcha challenge. This would save users from having to deal with cookie problems, and would also allow them to solve a captcha in something like Discord, where the captcha is embedded in the app and there's no way to use the cookie at all.
Support responded and said that it was up to each app developer to implement a way to use the accessibility cookie in their app.
I responded with the following:
> Now it sounds like we're shifting the burden of accommodating HCaptcha onto developers instead of users. Developers want to implement a solution that is accessible already. If they have to design their own UI for accommodating the accessibility cookie, the solution is not accessible. Why is HCaptcha so opposed to solving this problem once so that developers do not have to solve it over and over again?

And they responded:
> The reason is because cookies are supposed to be used in a web browser. If you open Discord or Signal in a web browser, it will work. However since the apps aren't web browsers they won't be able to consume it. We have other clients that have implemented ways to consume the accessibility cookie in their apps, so it's up to the developer.

Am I crazy or does this go 0% of the way to addressing anything I said in the previous e-mail?

JEkis,

@simon I'm extremely disappointed by this. I expected better from them, since they are, or used to be, associated with cloudflair who I highly respect. This is textbook blameshifting. Never mind that accessibility should never be dependant on disabling privacy features. That is not equal treatment.

The first step in returning something purchased online is to print out a return shipping label. so, what is one supposed to do when the thing being returned is your only printer?

A radio station just sent me an email about an on-air contest. The thing is, there have been daily winners since December 11 and there are only 2 days left. Why did they wait until now to let their email subscribers know?

JEkis, to random

I wonder how many people would seriously consider moving to any bank which would proactively send a monthly email listing all upcoming subscription charges, with information about how to go about canceling each one.

JEkis, to random

I think the service that I'm using to remove trackers from emails broke this unsubscribe link. “We won’t send you any more emails about [querystring].”

question: I took part in a research study for a university, and they need a Form W9 to process my compensation. All well and good. They want me to upload it through a google form. Is this secure? I'm guessing not, but I'm no pro, I only aspire to be one some day. Any feedback on this would be appreciated.

JEkis,

@SecureOwl Thanks, really glad I asked. BTW I read my first Blue Team Diaries book a few weeks back and thoroughly enjoyed it.

JEkis,
