On Insiders PK claimed that if Meta didn’t fund News Corp reporters then misinformation would run riot.

I think not funding News Corp would significantly reduce misinformation, lies, and Biased Liberal party reporting.

That’s why I cancelled my Australian subscription 20 years ago, I also never watch SkyNews or any commercial television channel. I also have an iron clad rule to never cross a paywall.

Jakra,
@Jakra@aus.social avatar

@Old_IT_geek I cross a few paywalls, but they are all chosen very carefully with much attention given to the owners and flows of Monies.

"The HDMI Forum has rejected our proposal unfortunately. At this time an open source HDMI 2.1 implementation is not possible without running afoul of the HDMI Forum requirements."

@frameworkcomputer @Linux_Is_Best now bring on the DisplayPort televisions. My understanding is that hdmi was favoured because of the DRM enforcement capabilities. I’ll watch this with interest!

“House prices continue to rise despite higher interest rates, inflation and cost of living” - wow, it’s almost like when it’s something essential, demand can’t be altered much, and the price is determined almost solely by supply! Imagine if we could have predicted that!

So now humans aren't even doing the prompting to the AI that does the work! What role will we have in this New World?! (edited: typo)

Gargron, to random
@Gargron@mastodon.social avatar

I'm tired of hearing about AI, to be honest. I never cared for it. I don't respect people who use generative AI, and I despise companies that sell out people's data to train it. Yes, people will lose jobs to it, but the world will not be better for it. It's just that consequences are rarely immediately apparent in such complex systems.

Jakra,
@Jakra@aus.social avatar

@Gargron As always, there will be enormous benefits, for a small percentage of the population. Whether the benefits flow on to the rest of the economy, at the global, national, and local levels remains to be seen.
The eventual benefits of the industrial revolution, which took away jobs, and disrupted the economy, are the very foundation of our current, technological world.
The fact that those same changes to the economy also cause climate change, waste on a truly horrendous scale, the poisoning of the air and water, should not be overlooked. So even if AI eventually becomes an economic boon to the world, it may well still be to the detriment of the planet.
Or maybe I just think the sky is falling.

If Anthony Albanese wants to be anything other than a 1 term PM in a 1 term government he and his ministers need to step up.

They need to stop letting the opposition determine policy. They need to stop the opposition dominating MSM with their own talking points and spin.

They need to stop letting the opposition take credit for decisions.

In short the Albanese government needs to start governing.

Jakra,
@Jakra@aus.social avatar

@sortius @amonkeyinsilk if Labor becomes the opposition, then who would be governing? Another decade of the LNP fills me with dread.
Perhaps a coalition of the minor parties on the left? The greens, sustainable Australia, Leaglise Marajuana, etc.
We can’t afford another decade of climate inaction and more fossil fuel projects!

Jakra,
@Jakra@aus.social avatar

@sortius @amonkeyinsilk would changing Labor from the inside be more effective? If LOTS more people became members of the political parties, could we drive change from the inside?

Jakra,
@Jakra@aus.social avatar

@amonkeyinsilk @anne_twain @sortius I don’t mean subverting the system, I mean grassroots engagement in politics.
But I was just doing some research. Caucus members lose any real say once the party gains government. Which might explain the difference between Labor in opposition vs Labor in power.

Under their regime, there are no protections, no rights. It's a digital free-for-all on every Australian's data

Glaring is they're one of the biggest offenders

So yeah, back to ALDI.

Jakra,

@lukasm Maybe its time for government to create some incentives and tax-breaks to assist in setting up in competition with the big supermarkets. Cost of living crisis? Time for local co-ops! Imagine locally-sourced food! Not shipped from Sydney! (->WA).

@dgar unfortunately big money can buy you bad science. It doesn’t matter how you organise a society, if money can buy you power, then the rich will do so.
How do you decouple wealth from power? Well, that’s the rub isn’t it!
