I often go to some cities in Asia and sometimes will see someone who lives on the street. Many times they are sleeping during the day since it’s so hot and sometimes they look malnourished too. What would be the best foods I could provide them (assuming some restaurants or convenience stores are nearby) which would not spoil?
I’m trying to use my car less and bike to places where I can. I’ve thought about getting an e-bike to extend the range of places I can bike to, but one things that’s holding me back is what do I do with it while at the store? If it were just my crappy normal bike I wouldn’t really worry too much about someone stealing...
It’s not just that when you add the time getting to and from airports, getting on and off the planes, and the time lost that could have been used to work, this argument does not stack up. These people are responsible for the rail services the rest of us have to put up with. There’s zero incentive for them to make the trains cheaper or more reliable if they’re allowed to fly whenever they feel like it.
Same for every politician. They should have to suffer what they put the rest of us through. Incentives, innit.
After only a few months, Chris Swanson is sick of shopping for houses in what the 39-year-old calls a “dumpster fire” of a market for first-time buyers like himself....
There is no reason for a large private rental market to exist. You don’t even have to ban private landlords, just make them compete with the most cost-effective provider: the state. Governments can borrow cheaper than any landlord and rent out indefinitely, turning a surplus (aka profit) at a fraction of private rents.
You still need to hold the Dems feet to the fire. Just handing them your vote as the least worst option just means you’ll never be offered any good options. Make them work for it.
You can get involved in protests to try to make them pay attention. You can write letters to your representatives and prospective candidates. You can ask good questions at town halls. You can campaign for good candidates.
Voting is the least important thing you can do. Ultimately you have no choice but to vote for the least worst option but if that’s the only thing you ever do, you’re helping to bury all of us.
Yeah, this is what we all thought when the internet was shiny and new. Turned out that everyone was assumed to be a straight white man and if you made it clear you were not, you’d get harassed.
I didn’t get through all of your post because this starting point is so fucking naive. Sorry.
A Boston doctor has been arrested and charged with allegedly masturbating and exposing himself while sitting next to 14-year-old teenage girl while flying.
There’s a very high level of support for NHS strikes, around 2:1 for vs against. Mebbe cast aspersions on those with the power to resolve them, not the people the Daily Mail will never give a platform to.
If you cannot be arsed to think about how power works, there is no helping you.
Still, at least France will get its revolution. All those people out on the streets, it’s inevitable, right? So easy, the whole world would be a socialist paradise if only people weren’t so stupid and lazy and too busy keeping a roof over their heads to be more like your saintly self.
This seems unlikely. Vaccination is far less effective if you leave a large proportion of the population unprotected. That’s why we vaccinate everyone against rubella even though it’s only dangerous to foetuses if their mother catches it while pregnant.
I don’t know if it was due to production shortages or a cautious roll out, or a bit of both. But I doubt it was due to the medical profession forgetting how vaccination works.
Straight cash only. Gift cards are a scam. An interest-free loan to the company selling them, which they only have to pay back when the card is used, or never if it isn’t used in time, and the recipient doesn’t get a choice where to spend it nor put it towards anything they’re saving up for.
My heart used to sink every time I got a gift card, requiring me to be organised enough to keep it safe and remember to take it with me into town. Worst present ever. Sorry.
*I’m sure there are exceptions, if you know the person well enough. But if you don’t know what to buy them, you probably don’t know them well enough. And you’re still giving scammers an interest-free loan.
Was reminded how Epstien not killing himself was/is so accepted yet it’s still a conspiracy theory. Is there any similar ones you guys believe to be completely true ?
It might feel almost like that but there’s no conspiracy, just power doing what only power can: protecting itself. These people have billions tied up in fossil fuels; oil wells and coal mines but also the products which rely on them. Tesla is only profitable because it sells its carbon credits to carbon-reliant manufacturers.
None of these people would exactly be left in dire straits if we stopped using carbon fuels tomorrow. But they would lose most of their wealth and thus most of their power.
There are undoubtedly small-scale conspiracies, such as various oil companies covering up what they knew about global warming decades ago, or misleading accounts of emissions. But there is no grand (explicit) conspiracy, just tips and tricks and extremely rich people refusing to become merely rich. Even if it means planning escape bunkers and working out how to control the servants they will need to take with them when their money means nothing any more.
AI simply reproduces the world it has obtained all its content from. It’s not intelligent in any way, shape or form. It’s a system perpetuator and it’s not going to save you.
We’re not close at all. It’s good at some well-defined tasks, that’s all. It is not intelligent, it cannot think, it is not capable of ruling the world and neither should we want it to. “Hey, here’s all the fucking terrible decisions humans have made in the past, copy them.”
Yeah, that’s not how it works. It’s a comforting liberal illusion but, as with all things liberal, it entirely ignores how power works.
Labour members did it with Corbyn, after the Blairites fucked up by believing their own bullshit. They almost fucked up again in 2017 by mostly shutting up as soon as the election was called, believing the destruction of Corbyn was inevitable, and more convincing if they didn’t have an obvious hand in it. That gave us a shock result, with a hung parliament despite the Tories starting 15-20 points ahead. So they and their billionaire mates made sure they buried him (and us) properly.
You’re entirely ignoring network effects. No one is saying Amazon should have made a loss indefinitely, or at all. They’re saying that they deliberately made a loss to lock customers and businesses into their platform.
Network effects matter a great deal and I gave up half way through this article because I couldn’t find any sign at all that you recognised this. It’s liberal garbage: “Hey kids, here’s how the world works if you entirely ignore power”.

I do believe the biggest impact would come from regulating large companies and billionaires, but it’s not one or the other.
