I have a hard time ever getting to a new album the same day it comes out, but the purple version of Viva Satellite by Todd Snider came out today and it's really good. I know Viva Satellite was his most unsuccessful record, and that his life was kind of a mess when he was writing and laying down most of those tracks, but I personally think it's a really good record.

sighs in relief

Oh, they were originally projects he streamed during the pandemic, and he's releasing all of them for free.

Wow. All the free downloads through his shop are CDQ wav files. Really gotta hand it to smaller artists for making sure they're releasing their stuff for download in high quality instead of mp3s.

At this point I may as well just guzzle baking soda and water like some 1940s radio sitcom dad.

in Robert Young voice

Huhllo dear. It was a rough day at the office and I'm having a bit of indigestion. Do we by chance have any bicarbonate?

I probably should have gone with a Dick Van Dyke impression there. More recognizable than Robert Young I guess. shrug

going through the new audio description additions to netflix on unogs and seeing it in the list reminds me of how I wish somebody other than Andrea Riseborough had been the main character in The Grudge (2020) because I really enjoy her work but that movie is one of the worst horror movies I've ever seen.

I was on the phone with my partner. I had her on speaker and her mom's dog barked in the background. So one of our dogs--let's just call her Bearclaw--jumps up from what seemed like a dead sleep and took off so fast that she slid into the room where I was. She saw me holding my phone and immediately sighed and walked away like, "Dammit. You got me again." LMFAO

I swear I will never take for granted that I have a partner who doesn't make me feel shitty when my ADHD ass forgets about stuff.

Somebody please tell me a joke. I need a laugh, or just a smile, or even just an internal chuckle. Tbh if it's a math joke, there's like a 70/30 chance I won't get it though.

I cannot emphasize enough how much you should not listen to anyone suggesting that drinking raw milk and walking around outside barefoot will cure whatever ailment, diagnosed or otherwise, you have. We are doing bad enough with fucking covid and now measles coming back without people making sure that bird flu jumps to humans by drinking fucking raw milk.

A thing I learned today that I think maybe I resisted internalizing in the past, bc it's so ridiculous, is that some ppl really believe that when disabled ppl talk about the crip tax (the way extra expenses related to disability act as a de facto tax on disabled ppl that abled ppl don't have to deal with) they think we're bragging about being rich. Like...they actually think that bc we say it's expensive to be disabled that we have the money to pay for those expenses and all our needs are met.

I also thought Dawkins was dead. Is Willie Nelson alive!? What's happening?

JustGrist,
@JustGrist@disabled.social avatar

@ttpphd Willie’s alive. Either 90 or 91 this year. I also knew Dawkins is still alive because he is an incredible piece of shit and I definitely would’ve remembered if he had died.

If people are going to talk about brain damage caused by covid, they really need to do that without giving credence to that IQ bullshit. And by "that IQ bullshit" I mean that IQ is made up, doesn't actually measure intelligence in any objective or useful sense, and is absolutely used as justification for oppressing intellectually and developmentally disabled people.

And, no, I don't give a shit what your favorite pop scientist says to the contrary.

JustGrist, to random
@JustGrist@disabled.social avatar

It maybe sounds weird but I think that the fact that a huge proportion of scams are claims to be able to magically cure this or that ailment or disability speaks to both how prevalent ableism is and how inadequate the medical system is at actually improving people’s quality of life.

I've seen some responses about that NPR article along the lines of, "How can you change people's minds without conversation?"

Tbh I don't believe the author was trying to facilitate conversation. I thin she expected the article to be well-received and that her husband would be coerced into dropping some of his necessary covid precautions as a result. 1/

JustGrist,
@JustGrist@disabled.social avatar

I also think she chose to go about trying to coerce her husband in a way that will probably cause harm to disabled and chronically ill ppl other than her husband and that she thought writing a piece for a national publication and bringing psychologists into it was ever a justifiable action says nothing good about her character. shrug 2/

JustGrist,
@JustGrist@disabled.social avatar

People who are not in community with disabled people largely do not understand the scale of harm being done and they also do not understand the sheer depth of our grief in response, not only for ourselves but for our community members.

And the conversations they want to have are not the ones that are desperately needed. 3/3

JustGrist,
@JustGrist@disabled.social avatar

We are watching our family members, our friends, our community members become acutely sick and die. We are confronting our own mortality head-on every second of every day while others refuse to try to process their trauma from the shelter-in-place orders and instead choose to pretend we can still live like it's 2019, which puts everybody in ongoing danger. 4/3

JustGrist,
@JustGrist@disabled.social avatar

The conversation we need to have is not about how those of us who are more vulnerable because of disability and/or chronic illness can loosen up and learn to take more risks for the psychological comfort of others. The conversation we need to have is how everyone can process the trauma of the pre-2020 world being gone so that we can get fucking serious about doing the things needed to live in the world as it is now. 5/3

Ah, I see the news of that NPR article has made it over here.

As always, the answer to the question that arises is, "No. The ableds are not okay."

@mutualaid Hey, all. Ellie needs help again this month raising funds for her mom’s meds. The goal is $1250. I don’t have an exact count of what’s been raised so far but it’s not much, maybe 1% of what’s needed. Please give what you can. Boosts requested as well.
