Friday news dump: I tossed something new onto the Dungeon Masters' Guild. https://www.dmsguild.com/product/436667/An-Equal-Portion-Dealt-Culture-in-Character-Creation

I took the very long VTT/market research survey, and it mainly just reminded me how sad I am that I do all my gaming remotely now rather than face-to-face.

I don't want to need the product WotC is offering me.

I'm about to run a large, Tier 3 battle with roughly ten members on each side. I'll be using swarms for units allied and against the PCs. Any advice for something that involves an Ancient Black Dragon with support versus 10-12th level PCs?

KeithAmmann,
@KeithAmmann@dice.camp avatar

@bedirthan What terrain? Swamp?

KeithAmmann,
@KeithAmmann@dice.camp avatar

@bedirthan Ice trolls, black and white guard drakes, ogres, berserkers, evil druids (sub out their spells with arctic Circle of the Land spells).

I don't know that I'll use this Mastodon desktop client—it's a trifle TOO minimalistic for me, and I'm already very comfortable with the interface of my home instance (on PC) and Fedilab (on Android). But it's neat, to be sure. Who knows, you might like it. https://phanpy.social

In WordPress's announcement that auto tweets are disappearing on April 30 there was also announcement that Instagram and Mastodon will have auto post functionality soon

KeithAmmann,
@KeithAmmann@dice.camp avatar

@bedirthan There's actually an auto-post plugin for Mastodon already. I use it on my blog.

KeithAmmann,

@bedirthan Oh, are you on wordpress.org?

KeithAmmann,

@bedirthan Gotcha. I've been self-hosted from the beginning. No limits on plugins.

@bedirthan @Homebrewandhacking @Alphastream Not only doesn't it expand the stories you can tell, it "nukes" the story of my wife's warlock (her choice of words), in multiple ways.

There's been a lot in these playtest packages that I've disliked, a bit that I've liked and some that I've frankly hated.

Here's the first thing I've seen that I LOVE: modify spell and create spell.

Add sorcerous burst to that.

I mostly like the proposed changes to the barbarian, but extending Rage to 10 minutes is too much. What is this, right-wing talk radio?

Also, Primal Knowledge is a stretch. I get Intimidation, Acrobatics can maybe be rationalized, but a screaming hunk of meat is not going to be MORE stealthy than a non-screaming hunk of meat.

Something I wonder whether the developers at have given any thought to: One of the nice things about having subclass features staggered across classes, as they are now, is that when PCs reach those subclass feature levels, you can use those moments as roleplaying interludes. Trying to straitjacket all the classes into the same subclass progression means those interludes are all going to clump up, rather than being distributed evenly across your campaign.

Carrionettes go “zip!” when they move, “bop!” when they stop, “whirrrrrrr” when they stand still, and they want to steal your body and trap your soul in theirs! Ha ha! How cute!

How are the halflings different from hobbits in your world?

KeithAmmann,
@KeithAmmann@dice.camp avatar

@bedirthan They mostly live on a small, temperate, heavily forested continent and speak a Māori-inspired language. They're erudite and cosmopolitan, but they're also fastidious bureaucrats.

search is so screwed up right now, I'm about to delete it off my Android phone.

Half the time I use it lately, it returns only blank screens.

Kerbal Space Program doesn't allow you to launch rockets over a given mass if you don't upgrade your launch pad.

is actually failing to live up to the standards of a computer game about 1-meter-tall aliens who build spacecraft out of found objects. https://toot.site/@JenYetAgain/110244161114273683

If I were to launch a new journalism venture focused on covering the war in what would you want it to cover?

What are the big and small questions you’d want it to answer?

And what sort of relationship should it have to Mastodon?

KeithAmmann,
@KeithAmmann@dice.camp avatar

@timkmak I'd want to see maps. Lots of maps. For folks not closely familiar with the geography of Russia and Ukraine, the place names we hear have little meaning, and the significances of battles over particular locations are lost. Show the course of the war in maps. Not just flat political maps—topo maps with clearly identified rivers.

And—crazy notion—don't just use rectangular projections and put north at the top all the time. It's important to show how Ukraine joins Russia to Europe.

@Alphastream A primary concern of mine is whether D&D Beyond will allow DMs and players to continue to use legacy 5E Player's Handbook classes if we don't like how those classes turn out in the new PH. Which, from what I'm seeing in the UAs, seems like a significant risk.

KeithAmmann,
@KeithAmmann@dice.camp avatar

@Alphastream There's even more to it than that, though. To be blunt, I don't think it should be the players' choice which edition's rules to create characters out of. They can have input into it, certainly, as a session zero thing, but ultimately I think the DM should have the final say. And if D&D Beyond makes the updated options the default, as it surely will, it's going to get messy when a DM says, "Actually, I think we need to stick with pre-2024 classes."
