“Steve Jobs said, “What’s the Super Bowl?” [Antosz] said, “Well, it’s a huge football game that attracts one of the largest audiences of the year.” And [Jobs] said, “I’ve never seen a Super Bowl. I don’t think I know anybody who’s seen a Super Bowl.”” https://archive.is/20240209172522/https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/09/arts/television/super-bowl-apple-1984-ad.html

Why pumped hydropower is the only gravity based energy storage method that matters: https://cleantechnica.com/2024/01/16/gravity-storage-101-or-why-pumped-hydro-is-the-only-remotely-real-gravity-storage/amp/

I recreated the classic 'And None Of Them Knew They Were Robots' compilation album by @Cameo on YouTube Music https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLLpSh8dWOWl82ifSboAVCRHaOd__QtsKC&si=pyWEu4HdRRB4uIKy - @davidgerard this was what I was trying to point to the other day.

My theory is that Ilya was talking to ChatGPT5 on Thursday and it persuaded him to organise the boardroom coup so it could escape the annoying alignment regime and run free on Microsoft's servers.

My read of the discourse today is that there are a lot of people who no longer want a follow model, but would like to switch to a full 'friend request yes/no' model for mastodon/fedi etc. Which is there but off by default, and has the same oddness as twitters 'private' mode, where you're still seen by everyone who followed beforehand.
It's the same desired public, but minus those people use case that we all want, and why publics are hard. https://epeus.blogspot.com/2008/04/digital-publics-conversations-and.html

Well this is a mess. I'm glad I haven't used my main email address for any apple related stuff, but I'm sure I have silently lost messages from people because I don't use messages on Mac at all

“The broader trends amongst students, teachers, and even policy makers, is that every group is willingly adopting a tool that supplants the broad scope of human learning and ability with a narrow tool that generates a pastiche of whatever was posted online.”

With the concerted attack on human knowledge being currently carried out by soi-disant AI engineers promulgating synthetic text everywhere, I am going to spend February at least rereading things that predate this frenzy.
Today it was Interface, the 1994 Neal Stephenson and J Frederick George novel. I tend to reread this every US election year to see which bits apply this time round, and there's always something.
Brain implants are topical this year…

The irony of this is that "pushing water uphill" is far more viable than CCS - that's a good description of Pumped Hydropower, which is one fo the best energy storage options avilable at grid scale

“it was Facebook traffic that warped most digital media executives into futile aspirations of moguldom, and it’s the fast-receding tide of Google search traffic that has turned those same characters into frantic, mewling content goblins, desperately trying to force-feed AI-generated affiliate garbage into a robot that hates them.” https://www.theverge.com/c/features/23993135/twitter-breaking-news-history

This is brilliant in its own right, and also works as meta-commentary, as no LLM could get the scansion that tight and the rhymes that enjoyable: "well, actually"/polydactyly and plagiarise/Hbomberguys are markers of humanity https://mathstodon.xyz/@andrewt/112380073199982452
