It says ‘Actual Footage’ right on the video - that means it has to be real! It’s right there in the rules of the internet - you can’t just lie like that!

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

Have you considered that if there were “countless” videos of this happening live, that were verifiable in any way, shape or form, that this would be making international news, rather than being attributed to conspiracy theorists?

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

So your belief is that “The Government” is stifling discussion on this topic (Like, every government? Of every country? Or is there one overarching government somehow doing this?), yet it’s being freely discussed by conspiracy theorists without issue?

What ‘intelligence community’? Every country has its own intelligence agencies.

@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

You’d have to read the fine print in the agreement you signed. Comcast is one that I’m aware of that says “unlimited” but if you exceed a large amount of data, they’ll throttle your speed to something unacceptably low for the remainder of the month. (I believe it used to be 350GB but I can’t believe it’s still that low.)

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t believe this falls under net neutrality. Net neutrality would only come into play if they were (for example) throttling you for most things but giving you full bandwidth for Twitch.tv and YouTube and Netflix, but nothing else.

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

Geez, receiving a couple marketing emails would exceed 250kB. Maybe if you were using a text only email client and doing nothing else, and you only get emails from close friends and family, that could be sufficient…

I guess you’d also have to be using a non-smart phone, or you’d have to go in and disable all telemetrics and similar features of every app you used…

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

All I could find on a quick, cursory search was this, from their ToS:

What data consumption requirements apply to the Service?

Comcast applies a monthly data consumption threshold to Xfinity Internet accounts. The company retains the right to trial or adopt a different data consumption threshold or other usage plan for the Service at any time. If we do this we will notify customers and, if necessary, post an updated version of this Policy. You can learn about the data plan that applies in your area by going to dataplan.xfinity.com. You can view your current data usage at any time by signing into your account on xfinity.com and viewing the data usage meter at customer.xfinity.com/MyServices/…/UsageMeter/. You can also use the Xfinity app to view your data usage.

I don’t have Comcast, so I can’t get any further details.

I learned to type playing Everquest. I could barely manage 15 WPM when I got the game, and in a year or two of playing, with no other real typing going on, I could do 100+ WPM. Schools in my area hadn’t really adopted computers in classrooms; there was a computer lab but no real computer related classes, and there were computers in the library for research, but I didn’t have any real exposure… until Everquest.

Let’s say for the sake of argument that a terrorist cell popped up in your town. Would be okay for the government to carpet bomb your town, including your house, to remove them? If not, how is that different from the scenario in Gaza?

Trump calls on supporters to 'guard the vote' in Democratic-run US cities (www.reuters.com)

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Donald Trump, the frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination, told his supporters on Saturday to “go into” Philadelphia and two other Democratic-run cities to “guard the vote” in 2024, repeating his unfounded claims of widespread election fraud in 2020 as justification...

I think he’s backed himself into a corner, whether he recognizes it or not. Even if he walked back his decision at this point and re-banned all of the problem children, it wouldn’t matter - everyone has already moved on, and all he’d be doing is further killing his userbase. To reference that old set of tweets, Twitter is a Nazi bar, now, and there’s nothing Elon can or will do about that.

KoboldCoterie,

Stop voting for the parties of Capital.

What’s your proposed alternative? Like it or not, there’s two viable parties in this country. If you’re a progressive voter and choose not to vote for the democrat because they’re not doing enough for you, you’re effectively voting for the republican.

EU court says public employees may be barred from wearing head scarf (www.reuters.com)

The top European Union court ruled on Tuesday that public authorities in member states can prohibit employees from wearing signs of religious belief, such as an Islamic head scarf, in the latest decision on an issue that has divided Europe for years....

KoboldCoterie,

I’m not from the EU and don’t have the context to really understand the history of this decision, but this just seems so unnecessarily divisive.

If they’re interpretting ‘roguelite’ as single-session games with meta-progression between runs, then VS qualifies. I wouldn’t have called it a roguelite personally, but I can at least see where they got it from.

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

Noita is just fantastic. It’s mind-blowing to realize for the first time just how expansive the game is. Like, a new player can definitely “win” the game without even seeing 95% of it, or knowing it’s there. It’s not until you get curious and brave and start exploring off the “easy” path that the sheer scope of it is apparent. (This was absolutely my experience.)

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

Latest update even makes it playable fully with a controller very nicely. I’ve been enjoying it on the Steam Deck. It’s surprising how well it works, considering the complexity of the game and its controls. (It was playable with a controller before that update, but they massively re-worked the default control scheme to be much better and more efficient.)

KoboldCoterie,

Nobody really has the moral high ground here. You can argue that what they’re doing is necessary or justified but I think you’d be hard pressed to argue that it’s right or moral.

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

Oh, boy. That’s just what we need - a swine flu pandemic, just in time for 2024. At least Britain is reporting it early and taking it seriously (from the sound of it), not just sweeping it under the rug until it’s a real problem.

KoboldCoterie,

It took me far too long to realize what was going on before this image was modified…

The real question that I rarely see answered about all of these hand-held PCs coming out is, can they cleanly suspend and resume at any point during gameplay without causing problems? That’s (IMO) the single most important feature of the Steam Deck and one I’ve never seen work as well in other hand held PCs.

America, if you’d vote for change, this wouldn’t be necessary. The US is the only developed country where this is commonplace.

In order for us to vote for change, change has to be on the ballot.

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

Here in the US, we have companies who offer their services to prepare taxes for you, and they spend an unreasonable sum lobbying the government specifically to not do what you lucky folks have been getting all along. Just can’t have the US without unfettered capitalism ruining things for average folk. :(

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

You sound like someone who has only ever lived in a city. I grew up in a fairly rural area where getting groceries from anywhere other than a little corner store (equivalent to a convenience store) was a 30-45 minute drive. How would you propose handling that without private car ownership? Are we just going to abolish living outside of suburbs, too? Or are we going to fund bus service to all of the little podunk towns in the middle of nowhere?

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

You might hate it, but a lot of people strongly prefer that sort of lifestyle and would hate living in a city. Are you proposing we force everyone to conform to your preferences?

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

That’s silly, friends only exist on the internet.

KoboldCoterie,

Not saying it’s not true, but I don’t think timesofisrael.com is a particularly unbiased source in this conflict.

As the article notes, part of the problem with large-scale operations like this in the past is that they disrupted ocean life to a significant degree; this one is different in that it (theoretically) doesn’t, since it’s smaller and mobile and not tethered to the seabed.

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

Power is then sent to the grid via a subsea cable which also acts as the kite’s tether.

I’d assume this is less disruptive to sea life than this, which appears to just be a giant bollard with a turbine mounted on it sunk into the seabed.

KoboldCoterie,

They’re strongly disincentivized to enact policy that allows anyone to hold them accountable.

KoboldCoterie,

Yeah? And you’re implying that the fact that they can get breast implants is the problem, not the fact that the other treatments aren’t available? Come on.

It certainly is sad that they aren’t also allocating money for dental care, yes.

If you’re unhappy with the moderation on a given community, make your own competing community, with your own moderation policies. If more people feel strongly about it and agree with your views over the original, they can come to your community instead. There is no overarching ‘Lemmy’ to ban you; instances are all separate. That’s the beauty of Lemmy.

Biden can’t win here. Whatever he does, he’s going to alienate a huge voting bloc. The best option could just be for him to choose not to run.

KoboldCoterie,

To elaborate on this, make sure you’re visiting the lemmy.world community from your home instance, not going to lemmy.world’s URL. Use the search button (upper right corner) to search for the community, and the result will be the link to that community from your instance.

Maybe something like “Which companies are giving us the biggest commission on referrals currently?”

Antisemitism rampant online since Hamas’ attack, report finds (www.euronews.com)

The new research, released by the UK-based Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) on Tuesday, found that in the three days following the attack, the absolute number of antisemitic comments on conflict-related YouTube videos increased by 4963% when compared to the previous three days....

Sounds like it’s anti-Israel comments more than anti-Semitic comments? Maybe I just don’t understand something about the situation, but it feels like it’s impossible to criticize Israel without being labeled anti-Semitic. The country is not a religion.

KoboldCoterie, (edited )
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

Sounds like it’s anti-Israel comments more than anti-Semitic comments?

You’ve pulled out one example from the many listed in the article. If I say “Both Israel and Hamas are in the wrong”, that’s not criticism of the Jewish community, or the Muslim community, that’s criticism of Israel’s government, and Hamas’ leadership. Just like how if I criticize the US Republican party, I’m not criticizing Christianity as a religion.

Edit: Basically, you can’t have it both ways. Either Israel is synonymous with the Jewish community, or they are not. You can’t claim that it’s the Israeli government making the decisions in the war and also claim that it’s anti-Semitic to criticize them. I am arguing that they are not one in the same. Are you arguing otherwise?

Sure, but AI is the hot buzzword right now, so it’s got to be shoehorned into every discussion about technology!

A state near mine that I visit occasionally has laws in place that prohibit pumping your own gas. I always forget this and get out of the car, which leads to a very awkward confrontation with the attendant. It definitely feels weird.

Looking at their code, it’s really just a bunch of checks to make sure the variable passed is actually an integer that it can work with, followed by the solution:

return (n % 2) === 1;

I can’t think of a more efficient way to get the answer. It does seem like it’d take more time to download the package than to just write the function yourself, though.

Even if AI companies were to pay the artists and had billions of dollars to do it, each individual artist would receive a tiny amount, because these datasets are so large.

I don’t really think that’s a problem. If a company is generating $X.00 in revenue using AI generated work, some percentage of that revenue should probably be going to the artists whose work was used in training that model, even if it’s a fraction of a fraction of a cent per image generated.
