Ohh u didnt report someone ur also guilty cant see any problems with this.

That’s… not what this is about, though?

“However, plaintiffs contend the defendants’ platforms are more than just message boards,” the court document says. “They allege they are sophisticated products designed to be addictive to young users and they specifically directed Gendron to further platforms or postings that indoctrinated him with ‘white replacement theory’,” the decision read.

This isn’t about mandated reporting, it’s about funneling impressionable people towards extremist content.

Local officials found that hundreds of cafés and e-sports venues in Yiwu were offering maid café-style services, with female servers forced to kneel to serve tea, massage male customers, and shout “Welcome home, my master!” to anyone entering.

The procuratorate brought a public interest lawsuit to a local court, arguing that such services “belittle and damage women’s rights to human dignity.” They also said that some local businesses had failed to take measures to protect their female staff from sexual harassment.

[…]

“Maid cafés have been a symbolic space where women are defaulted to being the subject of sexual exploitation,” Chen said. “The key to solving this problem should be educating the public to respect women.”

Sounds like banning this might not be such a bad thing? Stricter regulation and severe penalties for violators would maybe help instead, but I don’t know enough about Chinese culture to really be able to comment on whether that would even be effective. At least taking steps to make sure this doesn’t continue is a net benefit, I think.

I consistently get far more hours of playtime per dollar spent with indie games I buy for $5-$15 than $60 AAA games. (I say $60, not $70, because I haven’t bought anything at $70, and don’t intend to start.)

If they want to charge $70 for games, maybe release them in a complete state and don’t include microtransactions and offer post-launch support for a decent period of time. Their ‘Video games haven’t changed price since the 90s! The price isn’t keeping up with inflation!’ argument is a crock of shit because in the 90s, you bought a game and that was that. There’d maybe be a $40 expansion a year later that roughly doubled the content in the game. There were no $60 games with $150+ of day 1 DLC.

Not to mention, unless your game was Super Mario Bros. or Duck Hunt, you sure as shit weren’t selling 19.6 million copies of anything. #3 was Super Mario 3 with 18 million copies sold, #4 was Super Mario 2 with 8 million, and it’s all down hill from there. Capcom’s highest selling NES game on the list was DuckTales at number 37, with 1.67 million copies sold, so their comparison to “the Famicom era” is a crock of shit.

If a teacher chooses not to lead the class in singing the national anthem, the school’s principal would be required to find another teacher to lead the singing.

I bet all the principals in Iowa will love this, when all of the teachers refuse to do it. Or there’ll be one or two compliant teachers per school who will subsequently be required to make the rounds to every classroom every day.

ELI5: How are unexploded cluster munitions not a solved problem?

I really don’t have a lot of background on cluster munitions; it only really came into my perception in response to the controversy over the US providing them to Ukraine. As I understand it, the controversy is because they often don’t all explode reliably, and unexploded munitions can then explode months or years later when...

The 23-year-old recently purchased a condo in Streeterville as an investment, with plans to renovate the unit and either sell or rent it out.

That line right there tells you basically all you need to know about this person’s opinion. “Doom spending” isn’t what’s keeping the vast majority of 23 year olds from purchasing a condo as an investment.

I came here to comment that this was the first sane abortion-related ruling to come out of Texas in a long time, but after reading the article…

“I do not believe that 180 days is justice for attempting to kill your child seven separate times,” Catherine Herring said.

Texas law dictates a civil fine of at least $100,000 and a felony with the potential for life in prison for anyone providing or attempting an abortion. Wild that they’re not using that law here. I guess if you’re going to get or perform an abortion in Texas, you should get someone to use this method rather than a medically accepted one, because the penalty seems to be far less severe.

Does the USA have any open market cellular options that are legitimate pay-as-you-go and only for what you use options like Europe yet?

I’ve lived under a rock for 10 years. I did Metro ages ago while most were still on contracts. Surely we’ve reached true capitalist open market freedom by now. Is it still total closed market, noncompetitive, privateering corruption?

Do you not? I really don’t know, I don’t use texts much and we’ve had unlimited texts for like, 15+ years. I always see ‘normal carrier fees apply’ on OTP notifications, so I just assumed they counted against limited plans.

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

It was easier before every random website wanted to send you a text with an OTP just to log in and order a pizza or whatever.

That said, if it was $10 / mo for unlimited, or $0.02 per text, I’d take the per-text charge. I don’t use texts much and I’d probably save $8 / mo or more.

Assuming you’re making the change in your browser’s default search settings, and not editing the URL every time you do a search, it takes a minute or two once, and it’s done forever. No harder than adding an adblock rule and it also removes a lot of other bullshit, too (since it’s just defaulting you to a ‘web only’ search).

While this is a nice thought in theory, it breaks down as soon as you start actually thinking of it in practical terms.

  • Some rural road that gets a few cars a day at best does not really need sidewalks and certainly does not need bike lanes.
  • A road with potholes is more dangerous to pedestrians and bikers due to the potential for cars to lose control, or for drivers to swerve to miss a pothole and potentially endanger other travelers.
  • Adding bike lanes and sidewalks is just impractical in a lot of areas. Where is that space coming from, when private property extends to the road edge currently? Are we just declaring eminent domain and taking 3-6 feet of everyone’s property frontage for this initiative? I’m sure that will be a very unpopular initiative. What about areas where buildings are too close to the street to allow for this? There’s just too many areas where it’s not practical or possible to do.

I’m all for phasing out cars in areas where it’s reasonable to do so, but your proposal just isn’t compatible with reality.

How is that different from the emulators that Nintendo has shut down?

Nintendo alleged Yuzu was “primarily designed to circumvent several layers of Nintendo Switch encryption so its users can play copyrighted Nintendo games", that’s all it took, and isn’t that exactly what this is doing? It just happens to be one single game, rather than a large number of them.

The other problem with this, content aside, is the classification of a post as “successful” or “unsuccessful”, implying that how much interaction your post receives is a scoreboard and you should be using the platform solely with the goal of scoring higher in mind. Which is basically exactly what happens in most big Reddit subs, and is a large contributor to the platform growing increasingly shitty.

People used to post on internet forums because they were interested in the discussion, or had something novel to share, and now it’s just to make an imaginary number go up.

If I have a problem I can’t solve, and I make a post, and get 1 upvote and 1 reply that solves my problem, I’d call that post far more successful than a repost of a repost of a cat video that gets 100 replies and 10,000 upvotes.

Seriously… I bet we’d see a lot more protests about this and other topics if anyone could join a protest for a lengthy period of time without having to worry about financial ruin as a consequence.

As things stand, the ROG Ally is one of the best handheld gaming PCs, the Steam Deck aside, particularly if you are after a portable powerhouse that is rocking Windows 11

Literally no one is looking for that. Some people might think they are, but they are misinformed.
