    Ah, yes. "Eye for an Eye" - respond to shitty behavior with more shitty behavior!

    This would actually be really interesting to observe. AI training on AI-generated content that was trained on AI generated content, etc. - and see how quickly the output breaks down and in what ways.

    It's worth noting that Kbin is federating now; they've got over 100 pages of communities to scroll through.

    KoboldCoterie,
    @KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

    You can go to Kbin, click Magazines, and browse - when you find one you want to sub to, just rightclick -> copy link, and search for it on your instance.

    Honestly, I wish this wasn't necessary. This is the worst thing about federation, in my opinion - inter-instance politics results in one instance admin defederating from another and all of the users of that instance, who may have no knowledge of nor care about the reason for the defederation, have all of their subscriptions disrupted. It'd be nice if it didn't remove already-subscribed communities, and instead just prevented them from showing up to other users under the Communities list / in the 'All' list.

    In case I was unclear, you can keep this as your home base, now - you can subscribe to kbin communities from Lemmy as of (I believe) yesterday afternoon.

    Stumbled upon someone who seemed completely opposed to the idea of federation and the fediverse. Like, if you are opposed to federation then why are you on here? They seemed to be pretty confused about what the fediverse is all about and likely joined due to misleading advertisements.

    I think you just answered your own question. Those are probably folks who saw people talking about it on Reddit, and came to check it out without knowing how it worked. They're also probably part of the subset who will not be here for long.

    If someone is being battered, they have the right to defend themself with appropriate / proportional force, regardless of the gender of the assailant.

    However, that said, you can be in the right and still be arrested, and public opinion tends to side with the woman in cases where the situation is nebulous, so maybe factor that into your decision.

    I spent an absolutely unreasonable amount of time playing Pokemon Blue on the original Gameboy, and the Pokemon TCG game for Gameboy Color. Those were pretty much all I used the things for for years.

    I wonder if they've intentionally disrupted the ability to do it to stop the wave of people deleting their content...

    @KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

    Hopefully the users of these subs provide enough backlash for this that it doesn't work out in Reddit's favor. If not, they're just incentivized to keep doing it. Only way to prevent it is if we as users make it less profitable for them to do this than it is to let the protest continue or reverse the API decision.

    KoboldCoterie,
    @KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

    I realize this was 2 days ago, but just in case you haven't noticed, as of today, kbin is federating, so you can now sub to these just like you would a lemmy community.

    The damage was done... there's a ton of news stories about the outage, all covering the blackout protest.

    There was some speculation in other communities that it was an intentional move on Reddit's part either to try to hide the protest (so they can say the drop in user activity was due to the outage instead), or that they were using the time to do something to counter the protest, but if that's the case, the news coverage is increasing the reach of the protest beyond what it might otherwise have had.

    Housepets memes? We're back to Housepets memes? Like we've gone years back in time to before furry_irl devolved into nothing but the same 3-4 memes re-hashed over and over for months at a time?

    I am so here for it.

    I think they've made it clear that even if they backpedal now, they're just testing the waters to see how much bullshit they can get away with and they're going to do the absolute most they can... Even if they completely took a 180 and said they were keeping the API entirely free, I'd still be gone.

    I always found it hard to engage with larger Reddit communities anyway; Lemmy and the Fediverse as a whole are much closer to what I wanted from Reddit but couldn't get, so I'm here to stay no matter what happens. Fuck them.

    KoboldCoterie,
    @KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

    This describes me perfectly. Most of the alternatives I saw previously just ended up being coopted by the alt-right crowd who got chased off of Reddit. Lemmy (so far) represents what I want from an online community.

    If so, I think that sets an interesting precedent that could be referenced in copyright claims over AI generated art... For instance, if a Midjourney user generating an image of Mickey Mouse meant Disney could sue Midjourney directly...

    Meta (owner of Facebook, Instagram & WhatsApp) is joining the fediverse very soon and we have to seriously prepare. This isn't a theoretical scenario anymore.

    Well, I hate this. The whole reason for coming over here in the first place (for me) was to get away from as much corporate influence as possible. This is the last thing I want to see.

    Not at all mainstream, but the most enjoyable show I've been to was The Protomen. They have a Megaman-themed rock opera and a good portion of the story takes the form of a few characters interacting in front of a crowd of onlookers. At their shows, they do an absolutely fantastic job of making the audience feel like they are the crowd in the songs. They're not just performing songs, they're singing to you, and about you. The audience gets to be active participants in their songs, and the energy and adrenaline is incredible.

    They typically play smaller venues, which helps, because you're generally no more than 20-30 feet from the band. Being part of a crowd pumping fists into the air and chanting "We have con-trol, we keep you safe, we are your hope" has never felt so great. For a smaller band without the budget for huge screens and special effects and everything else you might see at a more mainstream show, they really manage to put on an amazing performance.

    'The Will of One' from one of their live shows a few years ago.

    That is absolutely wild - I was at that same show in Massachusetts!

    I jumped right down the fanboy rabbit hole after the first show we went to... bought both albums and a shirt, and they even signed them. Felt like I owed it to them to buy the merchandise, to be honest - admission was something like $12, but I had way more than $12 worth of good time.

    I've been to four of their shows; they've always performed a subset of the songs from the albums, but I absolutely agree - especially after Act III is released, I'd travel quite a ways to see them perform all 3 albums in story order.

    @KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

    Went to grab a few links to some of the Act III songs they've got studio versions of, and found that they're 7 years old at this point... felt like they were a lot more recent than that. Covid kind of just removed 3ish years from my perception of time. As such, I assume you're fully aware of them, but in case you aren't, Hold Back The Night and This City Made Us are absolute bangers.

    I'm subscribed to their newsletter (which is mostly just tour announcements), but it occasionally contains Act III info. They're certainly not being speedy about it, but hopefully we'll get to hear it someday. :)

    do I need to manually add all instances that I want future members of my instance to be able to subscribe to ?

    seems not scaleable. I thought you could subscribe at one instance, then browse communities from all instances and read and comment no matter if your instance has it in their Allowed list or not ? (apart from the ones in Blocked)

    KoboldCoterie,
    @KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

    My understanding is that if any user from your instance subscribes to a community, that community is searchable in the Communities list from your instance from then on... it doesn't have to be you specifically. Some user does have to find the community (likely via a search specifically for it) originally, though.

    Discoverability definitely seems like a challenge.

    TI-83 graphing calculator in high school, around 1998. I would sit there in math class coding games in Basic. Ended up developing a reputation as the guy you went to if you needed a program to cheat on a math test.

    The highlight of the entire endeavor was a class wherein the teacher announced that before a test, they'd be resetting the memory on everyone's graphing calculators, to prevent cheating. I wasn't planning to cheat, but I did have a few games I was working on, and I didn't want to lose them, so I wrote a program that emulated the graphing calculator's interface, and would let you go through all of the steps to reset the memory, including showing the Programs menu as being empty afterwards, while not actually resetting anything.

    I showed this to the teacher just before the test (demonstrated "resetting the memory" with the program running, then demonstrated that the memory was in fact not reset), and he backed off from the compulsory reset policy in favor of the honor system, because he conceded that he wouldn't be able to verify that the memory was actually reset anyway. Made me feel like an absolute hero.

    It's honestly funny because I learned the concepts in the math classes a lot better as a result of this - it took a very thorough understanding of how to use a concept to write a program to solve it for you.
