And comparing blocking with Trump building a wall? WTAF?!?!

thom, to internet

Working my way through the latest drama. I'm not on the "everyone should pre-emptively block" bandwagon, but I also don't need to wait and see with them. We know who they are already.

But signing an to meet with Meta to discuss the future of the is absurd. And the defense by a particular admin was telling.

There's a good chance I peace out and stick with my personal instance, because are gonna and it's feeling like less of a community these days.

I just got my first real taste of the power of . I wanted to reply to a post on the new instance & was lamenting the need for another social account. Then realized I can copy the url of the post into the search box here & view it like a Mastodon post. I can reply & my reply shows up on the original Lemmy thread.

Wow! 🤩

All we need now is a button that opens it in your currently logged in fediverse instance. 🤔

Maybe a browser plugin?

thom,

@syntaxseed thanks for explaining that - it's been the question I've had about Lemmy/Kbin since this started.

Now is it safe to assume I can't start a new post on them from Mastodon, etc?

Okay, Mastodon friends, I rarely ask for amplification about my day job, but I personally pushed for my employer to make a big investment in enabling the fediverse, and I'd love for everyone to show that the support is appreciated. On June 28, you can join us for a (FREE!) hands-on conversation about how the Fastly team worked to support @Mastodon while the service was under a massive DDOS attack. Everyone who cares about scaling the fediverse should join: https://learn.fastly.com/security-mitigating-ddos-and-traffic-surges-with-mastodon @devs

thom,

@anildash @Mastodon @devs will this be recorded? I am VERY interested, but will be at a work event that day.

thom,

@michael I have a feeling all of those huge subreddits going private has probably borked the site. But I wouldn't doubt it might be on purpose.

I hate that mass shootings are so common now that, so far, they’ve coincided with two of my vacations. The mass shooting in El Paso (my hometown and where my parents were living) happened during my first trip to Hawaii and Uvalde happened when I was at Disneyland.

The news is hard enough to deal with, but it’s even harder to try and hide my anguish from my family. To try and at least spare their happiness.

thom,

@jpf I hate that I've got no answers when my daughter has a bad feeling and her school has a "police presence" on regular occasions.

kellybodwin, to random

I've been clinging to a futile hope that

(a) Mastodon would automatically start to feel natural to me; or

(b) A magical new alternative would appear; or

(c) Twitter would stop its death-spiral into fascism.

Since it's clear none of those are happening, I'm finally going to bite the bullet and leave the Hellsite and commit to posting only here.

Friends, I would love help with rebuilding my network and getting the "feel" of Mastodon. <3

thom,

@kellybodwin as someone who got an analytics degree but was too scared to use it, I always enjoy following stats/data sci folks.

I've started using @obsidian of late, and I'm really liking it so far! It's the first note-taking app that I've not given up on after a few days, angrily going back to my paper notebook in disgust at technology. 😂

thom,

@whalecoiner @obsidian Wish there was better support for WebDAV, because I do really like it. But I'm mostly sticking with Joplin until that gets figured out.

Great tip from @feditips!

The current account I'm using is not a Mastodon account.

RE: https://mstdn.social/users/feditips/statuses/110419243418935258

thom,

@atomicpoet @feditips I do wish there was a better name. Because every time I say it, my daughter hears "fetaverse" and starts laughing.

thom,

@aram Seems like some road trips are in order!

In Extreme Programming, we picked a new pair programmer every day. I decided that was nonsense, and adopted Pete. We paired for the next nineteen years. He preferred the title "alpha" to "principal staff," but he shared his opinions whether you wanted them or not. He logged off this morning. Rest easy, friend.

P.S., this is what he thought of YAML.

thom,

@ross So sorry for your loss. 😢

I wonder if people threatening to block Facebook's/Meta's new ActivityPub-compatible social media network also automatically block emails coming from gmail.com.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_Google

thom,

@stefan This is an absolutely absurd comparison.

thom,

@stefan I get that there's plenty of gatekeeping around here. And anyone who would immediately block any corporate presence is being silly (IMO).

But you can't ignore the reality of a corporation. Certainly Google (with their history of embrace/extinguish) would get blocked by many if they picked up ActivityPub. And so will Facebook (with their history of abusing everybody's personal data, even if you're not a customer).

On my personal instance I'll probably block first, ask questions later.

thom,

@stefan oof, that's a worst case scenario that hadn't occurred to me.

I'll add that I do think it would be in particular bad form if a major instance like mastodon.social did the blocking.

@Cloudguy Happened to me, too. I wrote about this last year that after deleting all of my tweets older than 3 months they started re-appearing.

    Since then I simply de-activated my account(s).

My regular feed is now delayed for 15 minutes. And it's not even Eurovision any more. I might have done something wrong. Reducing Sidekiq processes from 6 to 1 might have temporarily hogged it...

Still looking for that perfect tutorial on how to optimize Mastodon. None found yet. The existing ones assume too much.

I'll leave this now and go to sleep...

    thom,

@rolle Amazing how frequently the right article ends up being yet another DO tutorial.

    thom,

@atomicpoet @fediversenews Does it also notify users who interacted with the post? I really appreciate getting those notifications even though 99% of the time it's just a grammatical fix.
