Meta (owner of Facebook, Instagram & WhatsApp) is joining the fediverse very soon and we have to seriously prepare. This isn't a theoretical scenario anymore.

"One of Meta’s top executives showed employees a preview of the company’s upcoming Twitter competitor during a companywide meeting today" via https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/8/23754304/instagram-meta-twitter-competitor-threads-activitypub
The photo shows what seems to be a fake conversation with @tonyg with the full @mastodon.social handle visible in two places

@fediverse @fediversereport

arppacket,

@liaizon
I really hope Mozilla.social opens up to more people and makes more noise about the importance of the underlying federation before Meta launches their instance.

Otherwise the next greedy PM at Meta will absolutely just kick federation and interoperability to the wayside entirely, just for the sake of some rushed feature to add to their resume and move on.

@Deus@charcha.cc avatar

Any idea on how it will work?

  1. Is it going to be as simple as I will be able to talk to any user on Instagram (IG)? And vice versa?
  2. Will it be that I will be able to talk only with people I follow on IG? Or people who follow back from IG?
  3. Will Meta control who I am able to talk to on IG (or whatever it will be called)?
  4. IG is all about images/videos, are they planning to come up with an entirely new product where users will have to register and start from scratch?
liaizon,
@liaizon@wake.st avatar

@Deus we know very little, and that is very concerning.

Deus,
@Deus@charcha.cc avatar

that is very concerning

Yep.

Thinking of a scenario where people on the Fediverse get used to talking to people on this ‘new’ app and as soon as Meta realizes this, it pulls the plug. Also, scenarios like, “Data of our users are on YOUR server. Delete them! Here’s an email from our lawyer.”

d4r1us_drk,

@liaizon @tonyg @fediversereport I will immidiately block their instance/domain or whatever as soon as it comes out.

roldyclark,

@liaizon @tonyg @fediversereport From my understanding, a single interaction with a user on another server starts federation. Meta's new server will be a huge problem unless servers can block federation. I would like to follow people on Meta from here. Can we not federate, but not block?

So how do I block corporate instances?

makingStuffForFun,
@makingStuffForFun@lemmy.ml avatar

Asking the important question

cnx,

E.g. Fæcebook and Cloudflare IP ranges are public information, your instance’s server can block it by a firewall.

Goldmaster,

Ok that seams nuts. Never thought this would happen as it would mean that people would delete Facebook accounts and basically move to mastodon or such. But I bet it's only between Facebook Instagram and WhatsApp. Like you could message people on Instagram and WhatsApp from Facebook and Visa versa and not actually follow people on mastodon.

FaceDeer,

Interesting. I'm actually not reacting as negatively as most of the other folks here seem to be, I feel like it's a "the more the merrier" situation. Much like how I'm not mad that Gmail is using the email protocol, for example, it's good that it can interact with all other email programs and servers out there.

Countmacula,
@Countmacula@lemmy.ml avatar

I think this is pretty awesome.

FinchHaven,

@FaceDeer

"I'm not mad that Gmail is using the email protocol ... it's good that it can interact with all other email programs and servers out there"

Unless you've been sending email out of the same domain name since 1998, and Google/Gmail suddenly starts bouncing anything you send from that domain name into Gmail because you don't have the certs Google/Gmail wants

Blackholed until the certs are obtained

Just happened to me last month

cc @liaizon

_ed,

A big issue - Google suddenly does something / requires something that breaks things from the norm, and it isn't Google that has to deal with the flood of 'why is it broken??? I didnt change anything!! I pay you money - FIX IT emails' because they dont provide immediate or any support. See also microsoft et al

khaLutten,

@liaizon @fediversereport I do not want that to happen.

matthieu_xyz,

@liaizon @tonyg @mastodon @Fediverse @fediversereport

I feel like AUTHORIZED_FETCH is going to gain in popularity on a few mastodon instances.

(For those who don’t know, with Authorized Fetch enabled, your posts will never accidentally be boosted to a server you defederate.)

cablepick,

This reaks of embrace, extend, and extinguish.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embrace,_extend,_and_extinguish

00111000,

Lovely, it’s a methodology.

Absolutely sounds like Meta’s goal here.

gary_host_laptop,
@gary_host_laptop@lemmy.ml avatar

Is anyone for real going to federate with them? This is such a dumb move, who would think they care about this? It is a fucking oxymoron, how do they think they are going to make money with this? Jesus, capitalism is truly in autopilot mode at this stage.

Edit:

Meta is talking to celebrities like Oprah and the Dalai Lama about being early users.

WTF, how do they think it's a good idea to ask the fucking monarchist paedophile who just recently was discovered licking a fucking child a good idea? Facebook can't die fast enough.

Jode,

This sounds like some Hooli nonsense lol

awl,
@awl@shitposter.club avatar

@liaizon @tonyg @fediverse @fediversereport great. Now we’ll have sanctioned child porn on the fediverse. Time to leave.

sim,
@sim@shitposter.club avatar

@zeitverschreib @fediverse @fediversereport @tonyg @awl @liaizon Here is the fediverse which uses activitypub to connect between servers/instances.

I'd say that they are likely to remain around making bad decisions which has caused problems for instances using other software. Imagine that this has been a problem with how mastodon treated GNU/Social instances, and that was just one guy as the developer. Imagine how much worse this will get with a large corporation fucking things up and causing overloads because of the scale of it. That's if they aren't scared off or want to do their own thing like Gab did.

stefenauris,
@stefenauris@pawb.social avatar

before you panic, remember your local instance doesn't have to federate with any of these new corporate instances.

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

Well, I hate this. The whole reason for coming over here in the first place (for me) was to get away from as much corporate influence as possible. This is the last thing I want to see.

liaizon,
@liaizon@wake.st avatar

@KoboldCoterie Yep this is gonna be really rough. We are not ready for this. The non facebook fediverse will also grow really fast just with this new spotlight as every startup hears the news that they can reach all the new Instagram people using an open api they don't have to pay for

tobi,
