Most people don't care about centralized or decentralized. They care about whether there's a critical mass of users and being able to find people they want to follow and interact with.

These are both things Mastodon is bad at currently, but it doesn't need to be, and it does a lot of other things right compared to whatever social media app is supposed to be the new hotness.
