The fall of British cultural influence can be seen by how millions of tech people across the globe think the word 'git' is unproblematic.

    Total aside. I love that half the news stories about Jack Smith, the special counsel leading the federal investigation of Trump, use this photo of him. (Taken of him in his official garb at his day job prosecuting war crimes in The Hague.)

    He looks FREAKING TERRIFYING. If he were coming after me, Iโ€™d run.

    It takes a special kind of culture to think that publishing a video saying "I knew I didn't have the weapons to support them, so I sent them to die without weapons, but it's somebody else's fault" is good leadership.

    @osma And then "boo hoo we're going home so there".

    I can't tell whether this is just yet another rich person unable to resist their own ego's need for outbursts, or actually a calculated plan for something.

    Just had a knock on my door trying to get my vote

    He explained how under Labour unemployment was at its highest. I reminded him of Thatcher

    He then suggested the infamous note 'the country was broke' was indicative of how Labour mismanaged the economy. I reminded him how a country cannot run out of money and of Liz Truss's time in government

    He ended his conversation by saying I need to read some history books

    I called him a patronising tosser & told him to fuck off

    Loukas,
    @Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

    @Geri based on my experience in local elections, this late in the day they should only be trying to get out people they've alread marked as likely conservative voters. Maybe one of their volunteers deleted the exel spreadsheet by mistake.

    One of the things that gets me down is knowing that future generations are going to regard us with a kind of disgusted pity. because of our society's failure to handle climate change.

    They'll remember us in a similar way to how we remember some late-Roman emperor who keeps using barbarians as mercenaries, except far, far worse.

    Loukas,
    @Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

    Anyone can see that running your car in the garage with the doors closed is a bad idea. What does it imply when a society insists on doing just that, for decades and even for generations?

    I think it's safe to say that modern society has already shown itself to be a failure, but I don't think we've come to terms with what that really means, what that really implies.

    Loukas,
    @Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

    "But look at all the good things modern society has done" doesn't really work as an argument.

    It's a bit like saying "this soup is great, apart from the cyanide."

    Loukas,
    @Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

    I mean, maybe it is great soup. So what is going on that we see the cyanide, the climate change, as somehow integral to the soup?

    Loukas,
    @Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

    Do we even have the cultural tools to understand just how badly people in the future will think of us?

    Sure, we think plague doctors and posies of flowers against bubonic plague are pathetic, but the equivalent for us would be for all the rulers in 1349 to have an understanding of germ theory and insist that people not wash their hands.

    Loukas,
    @Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

    The big difference between how we remember past generations and how future generations will remember us is that they will be constantly aware of living in our failure. Because we broke the climate.

    Eventually they will forget what a 'normal' climate was supposed to be, just like people forgot that the Sahara used to be grassland 10,000 years ago.

    But for the next few hundred years that written records survive, people will remember us and they will curse us.

    Loukas,
    @Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

    The curses are so great in number that I feel them travelling down towards us.

    Loukas,
    @Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

    So the challenge for us is to live with that reality and still try to do our best.

    Loukas,
    @Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

    I'm not writing this because I'm trying to make you upset, I'm just trying to arrive at an accurate conceptualisation of our time.

    How would I, as a historian, think about a time that is the way our time is now?

    I'm pretty sure I'd think about it with a kind of horrified fascination, tempered with loathing if I was personally living in the time's toxic legacy.

    Loukas,
    @Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

    @avuko Yes, I think its very likely the next longer period of civilization will base its legitimacy on denouncing us.
