Sounds like a great initiative! Even if you’re working in a male-dominated career other than tech, I’m sure you would benefit from this. I, as a female early career biologist - learnt a lot from attending events aimed at women in tech/business/law/politics and frequently share ‘what works and what doesn’t’ with my female friends working in these other sectors 💪 #womeninSTEM

As I head into the final stretch of my PhD, there’ll be no avoiding the dreaded CV overhaul. I’ve admitted to myself that my current one is too wordy.

Younger students, who I help with PhD applications, share their academic CVs with me. I noticed that putting “narrative bio + goals” paragraphs at the top is becoming more common.

What are your thoughts on this? Useful as a brief cover letter summary or a waste of words/space? #academicchatter #AcademicCareer #careeradvice #PhDlife #sendhelp

I had less than stellar grades throughout my undergrad until the last year; I did undergrad and grad research in a fringe lab at a low-ranked university – which afforded me huge freedoms –; I published my first glamour paper after I was tenured and only because my co-authors insisted on the venue; I made many people mad by telling them what I thought instead of what they wanted to hear to the point that I had to reapply 3 years later; and I took breaks to rear children. All of this between the years 2000 and 2015.

Despite everything you may hear, there is room for being creative and getting away with it. I am not an exception, plenty of peers had similarly awkward career paths.

For the month of October, I'm participating in the annual #inktober drawing challenge. I'll be following some of the official Inktober prompts, but mostly the SciArt Inktober prompts. I will also be giving up my colorful inks and restricting myself to black ink.

Today, I'm following the #SciArtInktober prompt "lipid" and drawing some phospholipids.
