Later this week I'm giving a colloquium to my old grad school department (physics) about my experience getting out of and working as a software engineer. It'd be interesting to crowd-source this: grad students and other former grad students of Mastodon, what would you want to hear in this kind of a talk?

As I head into the final stretch of my PhD, there’ll be no avoiding the dreaded CV overhaul. I’ve admitted to myself that my current one is too wordy.

Younger students, who I help with PhD applications, share their academic CVs with me. I noticed that putting “narrative bio + goals” paragraphs at the top is becoming more common.

What are your thoughts on this? Useful as a brief cover letter summary or a waste of words/space?

“Job security” is an illusion created by corporations — A company’s only concern is how much money the company can make.

Companies are not “families”, they're businesses, and their goal is to make as much money as possible. If they can make more money by laying you off, they will.

One of the biggest risks in life is depending on only one source of income. It's more important than ever to create multiple streams of income.

I have a Masters of Public Administration so I’m not even sure how to convince schools to consider me for undergrad work. And I don’t have the prerequisites required to just jump into a or another masters… thinking or another career path with research and analytical thInking.

Let me set the scene: from 2018-2020 I gathered 2 years of professional web development experience, first as a working student, then at a 60% role.

Quit my job, wanting to finish my degree, but Covid happened, I get lost in tech volunteering and didn't finish the degree (and now can't afford to). The volunteering was for left political orgs, so it's not something I can openly talk about with a potential employer.

Now I'm looking for a job but struggle to sell myself effectively with all this grey time on my CV. So I am considering applying to a particular company while also saying I'd be open to an internship -- believing it'd put me in a better position to be hired. And get me back into the swing of a work life?

Will it? Or should I do what I can to avoid interning? I am at this weird in-between between Junior and Mid-Level (considering myself more of the latter, but I can't prove it). Am I essentially saying "train me for free"?
