Photos are coming in from the #IN2FUTURE Boot Camp, #IN2PAST's first doctoral school, which began on Saturday in Évora.
Experimentation, immersion, collaboration, sharing, reflection — that's what we are offering PhD students from the seven research centres that make up the Associated Lab.
"She criticized my organizational skills and told me that she didn’t see a passion or spark for doing research in me."
Pleading to passion are cop outs for not paying your, or providing sufficient guidance. This was squarely on the PI to begin with, by not reading the room or asking for timely feedback on workload. The the response left a culture of fear (nor one of responsibility and disclosure). Poor management as ever.
Into the belly of the build. Five weeks in, five weeks out.
Warmer than usual for this time but still cold enough for long tights and gloves. I have been making my own hydration and nutrition for long runs this build. I figured that silicone baby food containers would work for my "gels" - a mix of honey, ginger syrup, and maldon salt. So far so good!
My elevation runs are laps of the sledding hill. Boring but lots of time to think and reflect. And it makes elevation on race day seem luxurious! I was observing today how different I feel since finishing the phd. I feel it in my muscles. In my bones. It's been about seven weeks since graduation and I am still marvelling at the change. I am excited for the next five weeks of build!
1040m of climbing today in the middle of my long run today. Yoga practice 1174 - self guided yin.
I’m looking for PhD programs that are pretty self-directed? I’m just starting my search for schools to apply to and wanted to reach out for recommendations and places to start my search.
Specifically I’m looking to study a combination of Posthumanism and Community Development. To my knowledge, this would be a very interdisciplinary degree, and thus I might need a school that offers an Interdisciplinary Studies PhD or something similar. Or possibly a degree in either Posthumanism or Community Development, but that is flexible and allows me to study across disciplines.
I also have done my entire masters degree with independent studies (self-designed coursework and evaluation) under various mentors, and I’m looking to continue that sort of learning style (though if I have to take a few structured classes I can plug my nose and dive in, lol).

Today is the first day where I’ve felt doubt about doing my #PhD. Up until now I’ve loved it. I know it’s just depression warping my thoughts, but I feel like walking away. I will walk away until Monday, hopefully then I’ll be ready to get back in the saddle #phdlife
ICYMI: I was struggling writing my PhD for quite a while. One phone call changed that completely & I learned, that motivation is key. After 5 years of struggling, I started organising & it took me 2 years to finish. If I had known... #PhDLife
This week, I had the opportunity to present my #PhD research at the UCF Research Symposium 2024. It was great to see so many people showing the interest in my work on assessing the socio-economic impacts of compound #flooding for U.S. coastal communities. It’s always rewarding when your work sparks genuine interest and discussion. I appreciate the thoughtful feedback that will surely refine my future research.
Kids sorted and sent off, house tidied, washing folded, washing hung out / another load on, dishwasher loaded, kitchen cleaned, extra large and very rusty trampoline dismantled and put out the front with some other bits for collection, carpets cleaned, hoovering attempted, hoover mended, hoovering done, floors mopped, shower had, and now......I get to start work. I haven't taken a salary in nearly 20 years, and on days like this I wonder if I am a fucking idiot.

Day Two of our lab writing retreat and we are loving staring out at the ocean here in Maine while we work on our @ieeevis papers 🌊 But our favorite part of the Roux Institute might be all the plant life! 🌿 #KhouryCollege#Northeastern#PhDLife#Writing#Research
⚠️ There are only two days left to send us your ideas for a PhD project to be submitted to the Call for the Award of Studentships for Doctoral Research in all Scientific Domains.
I currently live in the #EU, #finland and I’m considering going to the #US for Ph.D., and I don’t know exactly how to make this decision. Anyone who has done a scientific #phd could give some hint on that?
At 2pm I will join an online session for reviewing my #kanban board and using it to plan for the weeks and months ahead. This will be especially useful today as I came away from supervision with a new list of tasks! #PhD#phdlife
Of course supervision was fine, in fact better than fine, it was great, she told me ahead of my formal six month review that I have ticked all the boxes so far and we made some exciting plans for the next six months. The time is going really quickly… #PhD#phdchat#phdlife
🛎️ We have just opened our mailbox to receive your PhD project proposals, to be submitted to the FCT's Call for the Award of Studentships for Doctoral Research, both in the General Line and in a Non-Academic Environment.
Morning. Sleepy again. Having so much trouble getting up in the morning, I went through a long phase where I could get up and exercise and shower before work, but that seems like a dream now. Anyway I am up and ready to continue work on my ethics application. So much paperwork involved! I’ve already done my interview schedule, participant information sheet, risk register and consent form, now I need to complete my study protocol, which is a very lengthy document. How are we all? It’s a wet Wednesday in Wales #PhD#phdlife
@purplepadma I'm in uni #today and will be reading a couple of papers on the train that I should have read yesterday, then starting my proper reseearch plan and warming up for confirmation. Have I nearly started yet? #phdlife
(The new journal still hasn't rejected my paper ... I remain in hope!)

Lying on resumes, in cover letters and job interviews is prevalent
Fast Company reporting on Resume Lab's Job Applicant Behavior Survey
“It’s disturbing,” says Stacie Haller, a career strategist at ResumeBuilder.com, an online resource for job seekers. “It has become acceptable in our culture to lie just to get what you want. Just turn on the TV. People are screaming about everyone lying.”
