Four years ago today, I went against what my boss's boss told my dept (that we librarians at a university were suddenly "essential workers" in the case of a pandemic) after two days of still going to work while all other depts stayed home. For the first time, I stayed home. I haven't gone back.

On March 16, 2020, we were packed and ready to go home at noon, as we were told to do. He walked into our office and held an in-person meeting (against what we were allowed to do). I attended from my desk anyway. He told us that we were essential to the education of students and couldn't go home.

All of the students had gone home. All of the faculty had gone home. All of the other staff had gone home.

We are an online-only library: no books, no study spaces, nothing for anyone to come to.

And suddenly we were "essential"?

Our budget has sure never been essential.

Our lives obviously weren't essential.

But my butt in a chair? Apparently suddenly became essential.

I stuck it out that day and the next, but on the 18th, I had had enough, and I stayed home. I didn't ask. I didn't tell. I just did it.

I am morbidly (no pun intended) finding this amusing, because these children have lived four years through an outbreak that US public health has largely ignored, thrown up their hands in mock frustration, and then refused to do anything about at any time.

Their saying, "We're going to pretend it's zombies like you'll forget that the real problem is still ongoing," is sad. I'd imagine that at least one kid has had a family member die or be severely affected or disabled by COVID.

In a small victory I managed to sneak a salt shaker upstairs so I can put salt on my daily egg snack without walking downstairs and fobbing through 3 doors to get to the cafeteria

Seize the means of salination!

Log into computer
Log into VPN
Log into software license
Log into PLM
Which needs you to log into your phone
And then log into your work software ON your phone
So you can log into 2FA and authorize the PLM finally

...
And then you can open a file

But DON'T get distracted during any of these steps or the whole thing will time out and you gotta start over lol

Writing advice: there are many different ways to tell stories and most writing advice will be wrong for you because it's how someone else works and is irrelevant to your process.

Well, that other person sounds short-sighted! There is such a thing as a character-driven story, which is sometimes immensely satisfying (when done right—same as when a plot-driven story is executed well).

  • unfollow most channels at first
  • don't be afraid to mark all as read lol

I haaaate that about large, fast Discords. If you create one, you can at least put a slow mode on the channels, if you want, so notifications are as many or as quick.

My only tip/trick is to use the search bar options: you can search for either your username or the username of the person, if you know who responded, OR use the "mentions" search option to see who mentions you directly. (Works in mobile or via desktop.)
