“It’s clear this is not about safety,” said Jessica Brand, who founded the Wren Collective, a progressive consulting firm, and works with several reform prosecutors. “It’s about power — they don’t want prosecutors in office who will hold them accountable when they abuse their power. That’s the theme that is running through the backlash in every state.”

Ok, in the interest of exploring/investing in federation, I have created a pixelfed for my art. I think you can find it: https://pixelfed.art/@jam

So if that interests you, you can now add... this pixelfed... to your mastodon feed? If I'm understanding it correctly. Or your pixelfed feed I suppose. Thank you for welcoming me pixelfed.art 💜

If you're interested in a lemmy group, I can recommend Beehaw! They're going to leave lemmy soon (lack of moderation tools) but are sticking w/ActivityPub (not kbin/mbin, though), so wherever they move will still integrate into the ecosystem.

There's also a solarpunk group, but I don't know much about that one.

UNT are always pushing the boundaries of what can be done in digital libraries and in particular. On a call yesterday I learned from Lauren Ko that they have started to archive web resources cited in student's dissertations.

Each archived page is bundled into a dissertation specific WACZ file (a ZIP with metadata), which can then "played back" on the dissertation's web page using @webrecorder's ReplayWebPage web component.

Here's an example: https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc2179336/

A list of web resources that have been archived for the dissertation, including a page from the Texas Historical Association website: "Village Creek, Battle of".
Viewing the archived web page for "Village Creek, Battle of" that was originally published at www.tshaonline.org, but is now made available from the UNT Digital Library.

Watch out, peeps. Next to be attacked is the ability to have our own bank account or a credit card.

"The good ol' days" weren't for more than half of the population. And we shouldn't be trying to return to them just for others to take control of our lives again.

I'm attending a session for Women's History Month, and one of the panel speakers answered the question about how her experiences as a woman has informed her scholarship as an academic researcher:

"My anger as a woman. I know we're taught to be kind, etc., but I'm angry."

@BigFrickinSwede and I are re-watching it again right now.

Four years ago today, I went against what my boss's boss told my dept (that we librarians at a university were suddenly "essential workers" in the case of a pandemic) after two days of still going to work while all other depts stayed home. For the first time, I stayed home. I haven't gone back.

MLISrevenge,
@MLISrevenge@gilbertredman.masto.host avatar

I successfully negotiated being remote, because my job is easily able to be done without interaction. We also have four campus librarians all over the state, so we had already long been dealing with meetings and collaboration from a distance.

And again, we're a digital library. No physical items.

MLISrevenge,
@MLISrevenge@gilbertredman.masto.host avatar

, even now, but I saw the writing on the wall with the way I was treated from the first day. Workers' lives are unimportant and for no good reason.

MLISrevenge,
@MLISrevenge@gilbertredman.masto.host avatar

Also, I live in a state that never took it seriously—where at one time, our per capita deaths and hospitalizations were the highest in the world. Yes. The. World.

And last year, our state legislature tried to make COVID vaccines illegal for all mammals in the state.

Yeah, they're real big on personal responsibility here, aren't they?

MLISrevenge,
@MLISrevenge@gilbertredman.masto.host avatar

@devononabike
Yeeep. I was so angry at that ridiculousness.

M was pregnant & has a chronic disease that causes issues w/ COVID, but her doctor was like, "No, you don't need to stay home. Nothing shows this is a danger to you." I was like, "WE DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS!" She decided to stay home from the first day anyway, for which I'm glad.

An Expert Who Has Testified in Foster Care Cases Across Admits Her Evaluations Are Unscientific

Diane Baird labeled her method for assessing families the “Kempe Protocol” after the renowned University of Colorado institute where she worked for decades.

The school has yet to publicly disavow it.

https://www.propublica.org/article/expert-in-foster-care-cases-admits-her-method-is-unscientific?utm_medium=social&utm_source=mastodon&utm_campaign=mastodon-post

MLISrevenge,
@MLISrevenge@gilbertredman.masto.host avatar

@ProPublica
I used to supervise visits between parents and their children in the C&FS system. Many times, foster parents would slip things in or try to make asides that they were hoping would influence my visit reports. Sometimes they did, but only to indicate that the foster parents were acting unethically.

MLISrevenge,
@MLISrevenge@gilbertredman.masto.host avatar

@ProPublica

I do not like to be manipulated, but more than that, I think that the strength of my being there was in reporting what I saw happen in the home of the actual family members. The foster parents' desires to adopt was of no importance to me unless it impeded my actual job (e.g., they lied about what they "suspected" happened during the visit).

I know it’s a privilege but we found a group of masking families and we just came from an outdoor birthday party where we all masked and the kids had a blast. I can’t stop smiling. This is what it could be. Games, fun, normal kid stuff. Just in a mask. I hope people saw us at the park today: an island of an alternate reality that could be where people cared.

The bubbles screensaver. Sadly, I don't even use a screensaver these days. The screen just goes dark after a certain period of time. Supposedly Bubbles is an option for me in W11, but it just thinks for a second and then goes back to my regular screen with no screensaver. :(
