The word for harvest is 'oogst'. The double O in there is pronounced as a long O, which may give you a clue to its origin: it is derived from the name of the month August, traditionally a time of harvest.

Funnily enough, the Dutch word for autumn is 'herfst'. You guessed it: that's related to the English harvest. It originally referred to the time of harvesting. In English it came to refer to harvesting itself, in other languages to the season of autumn.

Masimatutu,

@schoudaan My favourite Dutch consonant cluster is the one in 'slechtstschrijvend' (worst writing). In Swedish, we don't even need compounds to get crazy clusters: for example, from the surname Herbst (obviously related to 'herfst') you can get "Herbstskt" (pertaining to Herbst, neuter gender).

Masimatutu,

@schoudaan Now that I think about it, it is kind of similar to the Dutch-German sea-lake thing: 'zee' is Dutch for sea and 'See' (pronounced the same) is German for lake, while 'meer' means lake in Dutch and 'Meer' sea in German.

Masimatutu,

Ah, I see. Lemmy handles comment images differently from the rest of the Fediverse, even including kbin. Annoying.

Perhaps on , the word “favorite” makes us shy away from giving each other a ⭐️? It was like that on twitter before they changed it to “like” ❤️.

@Mastodon

Masimatutu,

@otterX When you open toots on their original instances, you'll see that they usually have more favourites than boosts. It's just that favourites don't federate particularly well because only those by local users and users followed by local users get registered (if I remember correctly).

However, I do agree that "like" may be a more useful term, which might make people more generous with their positivity. I know they use that over on and . I am using , which has the option to change the favourite button to a heart, which I currently use.

re-posting an old trick: after you type up a document, and you’re going to re-read it for typos, change the font. This causes your brain to flush the cache and re-parse it, so you’re more likely to spot when it doesn’t actually say what you meant. (Remember to change the font back if it matters…)

Masimatutu,

@0xabad1dea Nice tip! When I want to test the general flow of a text, I usually machine translate it into one of my other languages. In that way, I have to reprocess it as an entirely new text which I have never read.

Lord trying to browse in a mobile browser is a HORRIBLE experience.

Masimatutu,

@Konghammer @heyfluxay I just want to say that there are a lot of good, well maintained clients (and that the content over on the is more than decent). I love Eternity, but I think Sync gives the most comfortable experience.
