If not, you should. It would help you find issues a lot faster...

I've been using DuckDuckGo as my main search engine for a while now. Lately, DDG seems to "correct" my searches. A LOT. I don't know if it's just me or if it's a universal thing, but when I type in a search sometimes not only the results aren't what I was looking for, but I see the query itself has been changed to something I didn't actually search for. It's INCREDIBLY frustrating. I just might have to find a new search engine if this keeps up.

@R0B0_G0D @mike @jawsh images on Mojeek are Pixabay or Openverse, it's a sizeable enough challenge building a web index; adding in images would take away from the resources we have available.

For this query I wouldn't say it would help, but using Openverse as default instead of Pixabay would give you access to a bigger pool of images. You can set this in Preferences or try it via the dropdown on that page.

I've been trialling @Mojeek search again.

I really like the lightweight front page. Feels like Google used to circa ~2000.

Some more feedback:

  1. I can choose the interface language (English, Deutsch, français). Great. However, this defaults to English. My browser has already sent you my language preferences in the Accept-Language[1] request header. Better to use that.

  2. Mojeek has a dark mode option in settings. Why not use the prefers-color-scheme media query?

  1. we do use the accept-language request header but it has some issues so we use a combination of location/language and if there's a mismatch then default to English. We'll note this in feedback though to see if there's anything else we could do.

@dentangle The browser language can often be wrong so it's not being ignored, but taken into consideration alongside location.

That's what is happening here; I'll add your helpful feedback in though so we've got it when it comes to looking at and improving this.

This is interesting. I’ve been using DuckDuckGo as my Google-alternative search engine but, of course, it’s a privacy-focused front for Bing. Reading through the @Mojeek website, it’s an entirely separate search engine from Google and Bing, which sounds appealing. I’ll give it a go. 🙂

@onepict @dentangle at the moment the list is basically options which Roman characters as you've said; these were easier as it was not a massive expansion upon what we had before - just adding diacritics, ligatures etc. to make the crawl respect them

we basically have a bunch of non latin languages unsupported (everything from Ukranian to Arabic) and when people send in a query where that would've helped, it gets noted down; really a case of competing priorities with other work ongoing

Hey Fedi! A thought experiment:

How much would it cost in HW and bandwidth to replicate the original Google search? (Just crawl, index, search the index, display results. Only text in v1.)
I suspect it wouldn't be too expensive.
We could implement this, slap some collective QA on top of it, crowdfund the servers.

it's not massively costly, one of the fables that google has told to keep their walls up

you do encounter a lot of blocks though as a crawler, goo-bing have privileged access to quite a lot

@noipv6 we've got a sitting task for this and definitely it is something we're looking to do; I've added an extra comment to that issue off the back of your asking - we rejig priorities based upon direct and indirect requests (i.e. "I could do with this" or "this isn't working" with us knowing that feature x could fix it)
