I am not exaggerating this:

I created a new hostname in DNS, then added it to my existing webserver config.

It was online for 3 seconds -- 3! -- before getting a 404 request for /.git/config.

If you're relying on obscurity to protect your services, get that right out your fool head today. You have about 3 seconds to get your act together.

@tek There was a time when you could get your fresh Windows install (from a CD) hacked before it could update itself. If I remember correctly, the Scarily Low Number was something like 25 minutes at that point. 😂

Perspective: the biggest carbon capture plant in the world sequesters 1 millionth of our annual emissions. We would have to build a million of these plants to not_increase the CO2 level. And we need to decrease the CO2 level.

Carbon capture is a scam.

👌 From @tom_geraghty 's latest Psychological Safety Newsletter:
"Psychological safety primarily regards our perception about the consequences for us of speaking up. That doesn’t mean that we can disregard the consequences for others.

Psychological safety doesn’t mean freedom to say whatever you want, regardless of impact. It doesn’t mean zero consequences for causing interpersonal harm. It doesn’t mean believing that * I must always be safe to express my (potentially harmful) views. * "

I filmed the intersection at 23rd and Valencia for fifty minutes on a Wednesday morning. It's more dangerous than you can imagine. https://youtu.be/s1XSS4Y0dDk

Drivers running red lights or driving into bike lanes are common occurrences all along #ValenciaStreet. We need physical changes to our streets to make them safe for everyone.

I support the BetterValencia.com plan. Add curbside protected bike lanes and take steps to pedestrianize Valencia Street.

szakib,

@docpop Are red light cameras not a thing in the US? I have never thought I would see so many cars running a red light.

The single biggest thing that could encourage last-mile delivey by #CargoBike in #Helsinki and #Espoo would be to actually enforce the traffic rules and fine all delivery vehicles that break them. The cargo is already on the bike road / pavement / pedestrian area, it's just in the wrong type of vehicle.

If you do contract work for a government agency, you have to live with the fact that their IT department will do their best, usually through bureaucracy and incompetence, to make your work nigh impossible.

szakib,
@szakib@freeradical.zone avatar

@danjac but you can bill all the time waiting for them!

szakib,
@szakib@freeradical.zone avatar

@starbreaker @danjac I disagree with both of you.
First of all, if you are waiting for the client, you are working, so it's hours to be reported, whatever they say. It's not the client who writes the timesheet. Write something they accept.
Second, do not work for free. Either stop at 40h, or report 60.
If either of the employer or the client is not OK with this, move on.

szakib,
@szakib@freeradical.zone avatar

@danjac @starbreaker

  • Being forced to wait for the client is work.
  • I have had about 20 jobs in about the same number of years. There is always something better. Maybe it will take half a year to find it. You grit your teeth for half a year in the current job, go to lots of interviews, find something else, move on. It doesn't need to be the perfect job, just better than the previous.
  • If you don't like consultancy bullshit, try a product company?
szakib,
@szakib@freeradical.zone avatar

@danjac Is there perhaps something slighly different than what you are looking for? A different kind of programming job that you could do, but don't already have in-depth experience in? A non-programming job you could advance to? What would be better? Something where you could use your strengths. There is an element of trial-and-error, but if you try enough times, I think it is possible to find something better, even if not "good".

szakib,
@szakib@freeradical.zone avatar

@danjac

  • From my vantage point it seems that the full-stack javascript web app job market has collapsed. There are so many other things one can do with computers.

  • Try to look at what you can do, what is possible, what is out there, what people are moving to. I understand that it now seems that there are no options (been there myself, many times), but eventually something always works out. Don't give up!

szakib,
@szakib@freeradical.zone avatar

@danjac That's what I'm trying to convince you not to do. :) You do sound like you have given up and this makes the task harder in two ways:

  • confirmation bias will keep you looking at things that don't work, instead of actually considering things that could
  • your low spirits will show in your cover letters, interview answers, etc.

The trick is to find a part of your mind that is at least non-pessimistic and try to use that as much as you can. And a lot of pretending. And a lot of practice.

szakib,
@szakib@freeradical.zone avatar

@danjac Look, I have been depressed AF for several years. I would never tell anyone to "cheer up".
I'm not even trying to get you to be optimistic, just realistic. What I'm saying is that you should know and calculate with the bias of giving up and try to use your rational part to correct that bias.
The other thing was to think outside the box. Leaving the industry is a completely valid option if that's what works! I also keep considering it.

szakib,
@szakib@freeradical.zone avatar

@danjac I agree with all that, especially the freelancing part and that SaaS is dying.
How about an older, more established place? (10+ years of history) Something industrial/embedded? Specialist scientific software? Being the tech guy in a greentech company?
I know that this doesn't feel like the right time, but dream a bit. What would you ideally like? What real possibilities exist in that direction? Anyway. This is hard, but I believe in you. You got this. Don't give up! #MakeKindnessNormal

szakib,
@szakib@freeradical.zone avatar

@danjac if you read back this thread, you have made a lot of assumptions/statements about how/why none of the options could work. This makes you not try them. The one thing that is really impossible is succeeding at something you don't try.
I have worked on industrial and embedded software, no PhD. I have worked fully remote to the one bigger company I have been with since COVID made this easier. Hard or unlikely != impossible.

szakib,
@szakib@freeradical.zone avatar

@danjac I can relate to "Fuck the industry. I'm done." :) I wish you success in whatever comes next!
