Today I went back to Bainbridge’s seminal “Ironies of Automation” and realized that she was writing about “deskilling” all the way back in 1983. (!)

The screenshot of page 2 of the paper, in which the following sentence appears, “If the job is ‘deskilled’ by being reduced to monitoring this is difficult for the individuals involved to come to terms with.”

Just screened Wargames for the kids. It’s got literally everything in the news now about AI. There’s not one single new thing happening under the sun right now, vs what’s shown in a 40yr old Hollywood treatment of all facets of the technology. Fascinating how little we learn from all these cycles.

I understand all the schadenfreude about the disaster going on at Burning Man. The event isn’t what it was when I was going. But Burning Man in the 90s was fucking transformational for me and mine. There was no internet, no celebrities, no rich people. I miss that Burning Man the same way I miss SF and the cartilage in my spine. All things change. Nothing gold can stay. But fuck it depresses me to see everyone pointing and laughing at something that meant so much to me way back when.

@absamma cue 2024 indie documentary on virally infected sociopathic ‘austerity zombies’. What’s genuinely sinister, juvenile, narcissistic, and pathetic (must be a German word…) is that their entire philosophical program is just austerity for you and everyone else - while they consume everything. My fifth-grader is infinitely more evolved morally, ethically, socially, etc. The system that repeatedly creates and enthrones these asshats is literally going to kill us all.
