theory: you can tell a game dev's age by whether they think "I write games" is something said by a programmer or by a narrative designer

MrBehemo,
@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

(this is not a snarky comment about generational tastes or whatever, I litterally mean people mean the verb "to write" differently)

What's everybody's favourite Mastodon client for Android?

MrBehemo,
@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@TomF for me, nothing works as well as a browser shortcut and the mobile website. Every app seemed to be missing something, and I really prefer the ui and layout.

Thinking this morning about how Flash taught me OOP, in a special visual IDE, where the code objects you create are also art objects you create.

I'd tried to teach myself that stuff previously (without knowing what OOP was, I just knew that classes were a thing and at the time it seemed hard) but I didn't really get it until I was using AS3 to instanciate library symbols.

In fact, I still didn't really "get it" until some time later, learning C# or C++ and I was like "oh! it's like Flash!"

MrBehemo,
@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@AmicableAnimal Around that time I also had a lot of fun with Wintermute, a PnC engine that has a similar "2D objects with code on them" concept. It also has all the game logic driven by interfaces, except I don't think it ever called them that ... but I had a similar experience years later learning what an interface was. "Oh! it's like Wintermute!"

@AmicableAnimal Last update 2010... wonder if it still works? http://dead-code.org/home/index.php/

MrBehemo,
@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@AmicableAnimal TIL Wintermute is supported by SCUMMVM, and my game is on it 😅

I keep toying with different android apps for masto, but none of them seem to be as good as just having a broswer shortcut on my home screen.

MrBehemo,
@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@AmicableAnimal Same! The mobile site does everything I want it to do, which isn't true of any of the apps I've tried. I also like the layout. But like, philosophically? What if all the apps that are basically just websites were...just websites?

@AmicableAnimal can't wait to play with this and hear what beautiful non-solutions I get stuck on 🤩

MrBehemo,
@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@AmicableAnimal hehe, I mean, I like being stuck ... but I meant more like, even while figuring it out, it'll still make lovely music

I thought this week would be the week my new project would be ready for screenshotsaturday, but I'm not quite feeling it yet... probs next week?

graphs on the steam backend do this thing where, sometimes if y=0, it just skips over the x instead of dipping downwards, and my theory is that this has never been fixed because nobody wants to admit they have beta scrub zero-filled sales data, like me

yet I have no shame, so look at this nonsense

Look, I know gamedevs hate making UI but...

MAN I used to LOVE it. Took me years of effort to focus on "making the game" instead of "making the pretty".

My 1980s gamedev non-career is littered with orphaned menus and title screens. In some ways it was a terrible waste of time - effort devoted to works that would never be finished.

I'm very practical today - too much so, where I think ahead to all the brutal reality that awaits any project I start. I miss getting invested in the fluff.

@ElectronDance I certainly don't love making UI, but I do have a thing where I can't get on with making the game when I know the UI is incomplete. It feels like arranging the furniture before the roof is on.

MrBehemo,
@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@ElectronDance it's a load-bearing analogy

richardcobbett, to random

I kinda want to write an incredibly serious, dramatic cop drama about a broken detective seeking redemption for past sins, except with the twist that in the penultimate episode the Elder Gods return.

MrBehemo,
@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@richardcobbett for real, I've toyed with the idea of a game for years, with a sudden and surprising genre switch. Like a puzzle game that sudden reveals itself to be a horror game.

I think it would have to go 1 of 3 ways: either it's not at all surprising, or you need to completely spoil the twist or embrace the fact that it's going to get thoroughly spoiled anyway, OR it works and you pull off an effective and sudden rug-pull... And everyone is mad at you for it. 10hrs played 👎

NinaMarie, to random

i really miss the days of active forums and chatrooms. i just want to find a vintage fashion community, but the only active people are on insta or reddit, which i don't want to use... so i guess i will just enjoy my hobby alone........... daydreaming of fellow vintage collectors on an irc channel and feeling sad lol

MrBehemo,
@MrBehemo@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@NinaMarie I have a silly little hope that, in the ashes of social media, we somehow go back to just straight up old fashioned forums.
