Do any of you lot know about any enforcements made of the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018?

Legal cases? CDDO or EASS enforcement at all?

Reading this thread https://disabled.social/@dukope@mastodon.social/111690256370993163 and then following up to read about Apple's icon designer Susan Kare on Wikipedia...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susan_Kare#Design_philosophy

I wish we still had this icon design philosophy. Now it feels every OS/app constantly changes, often for the worse for newness/change rather than stability and actually being good. I find a lot of modern Microsoft, Google and Android icons to be REALLY difficult to use as someone who doesn't remember images, just loose colours...

There are times I feel I have the memory of a goldfish.
My CGM broke (well came off) so I am out of step with my prescription.
So having a day with no CGM to catch up. Not a big deal. A couple more like this over coming weeks and will be back in sync.
But how many times do I click on the damn app, even moments after doing so before, and knowing it is not on.

NatalyaD,
@NatalyaD@disabled.social avatar

@revk Do the CGM providers not provide new sensors when there's issues or GP let you have a few spares for things like this? A friend who had Libre outside of NHS sent broken sensors back and was sent replacements.

Seems better than having to bodge round it, which does defeat the point of staying in habit of using the CGM optimally and cost you loads of effort. .

The escalator at my local metro station has been out of action for over 3 months now and the lift has also been out of action since last year. Apparently the escalator was fixed in October then broke again. I filed a couple of complaints to GVB, the operating company for the Amsterdam metro. Today I got a call from customer service. "Yes we know it's been broken for ages" "you can check the status on the website" etc... I asked why so long. They say the parts are coming from over seas. 1/n

NatalyaD,
@NatalyaD@disabled.social avatar

@quixoticgeek My work has MAJOR supply chain issues on lift parts at the moment. Apparently Estates have gone to the manufacturer who say they don't have the parts, so it's like there isn't stock and getting stock is bottlenecked somewhere. It's not clear how much is Covid interruption, Brexshit or things like Ukraine war interrupting stuff (some of our stuff was supposed to come from Ukraine in 2022...). Especially with lifts older than a certain age. Not all lifts in X place will be identical.

NatalyaD,
@NatalyaD@disabled.social avatar

@quixoticgeek I agree but I think the issue is that in some situations every lift is a unique bespoke item due to stuff like the lift shaft shape/size/capacity and so on. It's rarely a "build from scratch" job but bodging onto older infra and not always being able to change it all, or worse, grandfathering old stuff which means they'll avoid change (losing grandfathered crap regs). We don't invest in infra properly at all.

I love the idea (OK not really, it is cruel) that people that do not have an internal monologue are in fact NPCs... 🙂

I have an internal monologue, but also have other mental processes - seeing (computer) code in my head in, sort of, multiple layers, and debugging code in my sleep. My monologue comes in writing and reading, and planning what I will say/type, but I also am able to come up with ideas out of thin air without "wording" them through in my head.

You? (ya, why not boost, etc)

NatalyaD,
@NatalyaD@disabled.social avatar

@revk @rachel

Some of my deaf friends who have early access to BSL have sign language internal monologue. I hear well with HAs but no monologue

But equally I've met "language deprived" deaf people who didn't get speech-access and learned BSL later (but too neurologically late for typical development) who have had to manually sign things on their own hands to process certain information which is fascinating to see.

How often do we simply just assume all inner-brain experiences are the same.

Today I did my overdue CPD mandatory courses for work.

Fourth time of doing them and they still haven't fixed the accessibility issues I raised in 2020. They use a hideous Oracle system "ERP" which needs to be set on fire and then some.

Issues include:

A horrible white banner covering 2 cm strip in top third of screen (over content ffs) with a bouncing arrow "scroll down" - I have to kill that every time a new chapter loads in the element inspector or I can't read with the bouncing.
/1

NatalyaD,
@NatalyaD@disabled.social avatar

Appalling contrast. Most of the background is blinding white, but some of it is blinding Magenta which hurts even more to read. Then they have bits with blue text on blue background which I'm fairly certain doesn't meet WCAG 2.1 on contrast...

There's stupid clicky/dragy/slide/fuck-about widgets and I can't just scroll, I constantly have to "click continue" which only allows once I've accessed every element in horrible layout.

Much of the popup text stuff doesn't zoom properly.

I sent detailed access reports in 2020, 2021 & 2022. I should have done this in Dec 2023 but couldn't face it and was too busy dealing with the morass of shit from the university's recent ridiculous restructure (it was SO bad, they're even admitting it was shit in staff comms now).

I've drafted a "Hi. I'm frustrated and getting a bit angry. PSBAR 2018 ffs" but I'm actually considering DirectToGrievance & EASS report for PSBAR breach.

If Oracle won't let them do access, SACK ORACLE 🤬

My Dad worked on Y2K bugs in the 90s. I remember him explaining the problem and how it started with 2 digit years and assumptions that tech from the 70s and earlier wouldn't still be in use by the late 90s. He was originally a computer programmer, but says not a great one.

For most of his career, Dad worked for a massive UK catalogue company in IT, eventually specialising in commercial product sortation systems - bridging between spanner-engineers building hardware and computer programmers.

I think Tom Scott might have already won 2024's Internet with his final video (for now, maybe, in this format etc).

Classy and lovely to the last.

I hope Tom gets a good and well deserved rest now.

Last night's random conversation was, topically, could we think of fictional mice that were better than Mickey Mouse.

I think we got:

  • Dangermouse.
  • Fingermouse.
  • Three blind mice, because we're not disablist.
  • NIMH disqualified on account of being battery-powered rats, but Mrs Frisby counts.
  • Jerry.
  • The mice from the Mouse Organ in Bagpuss.
  • Various chipmunks disqualified, because what even is a chipmunk?

Can you think of any more?

NatalyaD,
@NatalyaD@disabled.social avatar

@kim I can confirm for Internet people that Kim is sat behind me giggling away at the Wikipedia page.

She just showed me as I'd not seen her Toot yet and I may have giggled too.

Many mice.

As a deaf person I find the idea of sound having spatial components to be very strange. I have no directional hearing.

https://disabled.social/@moof@cupoftea.social/111676066804783322

I'm immune to wanky sound claims. I suspect also, they just sound bad to me, so I switch off with a massive dose of CBA!

My notifications have gone kinda nuts the last couple of days. If you've sent me a toot and I've not replied. Feel free to resend. Turns out when you write a 40 post thread. There's a lot of people who hit like 40 times... Triggering 40 notifications... The mastodon app on android (or the web interface). Don't handle this well.

NatalyaD,
@NatalyaD@disabled.social avatar

@quixoticgeek I use the Mastodon web client and I can set it so 'favourites' don't show up.

I see:

"Select events that you want to receive notifications for:
Someone followed you
Someone requested to follow you
Someone boosted your post
Someone favourited your post
Someone mentioned you"

Dunno if that's any use to you.

I saw someone post yesterday about Octopus energy in the UK offering money for people to not use electricity during a specific time window. Said person then went on to talk about hunting down standby devices.

There was a time when devices consumed obscene quantities of power in standby. But as of 2013, new devices sold in the EU must consume no more than 0.5W when in standby mode. So an idling device pulling the max 0.5w would need to be on for over 83 days to use a single kilowatt hour. 1/n

@kim @quixoticgeek @TechConnectify Also I'd not want to risk randoms turning their fridge off in case of high risk they forget to turn it back on for too-long with all the associated risks that brings.

Dunno how you solve the "networked could be cool" and evil capitalist proprietary shite. We probably don't.

NatalyaD,
@NatalyaD@disabled.social avatar

@quixoticgeek @kim @TechConnectify I suspect we'd need to mandate open standards and as Kim regularly suggests, any proprietary cloudy wossname has to put their code/stuff into escrow so if they go bust, that goes into the public domain to be take-onnable.

NatalyaD,
@NatalyaD@disabled.social avatar

@quixoticgeek @kim @TechConnectify Not sure Rainy Fascist Plague Island would go along with it, but we might have no choice if it's the majority... Get dragged along..

If one more person tells me that "research shows you process information more effectively when you hand-write" in response to me talking about the joy of digital journals etc, I will get very annoyed. My fingers dislocate when I hand-write. That's why I've been typing since I was 12, and now type almost as fast as I think. I process things just as well in digital format as you do on paper, thank you. I do not need learn to "slow down and hand write." I need you to be less of an ableist hipster. Now, may I introduce you to the joys of using Craft, Bookends and Scrivener all at the same time, following the delightful whims of an ADHD brain having all the ideas at once? Perfection.

NatalyaD,
@NatalyaD@disabled.social avatar

@naomilawsonjacobs Ditto. I've been typing since I was 6 cos despite surgery on my hands, I did not develop the ability to write without severe pain. I only really found out why aged 39!

Returned to work after 2 days off =argh.

Going to try 3 good things as per https://universeodon.com/@IanThistlethwaite/111555327698228122

I was able to update an annoying process at work to make it simpler with one inbox rather than relying on 5 constantly secretly changing named humans for each of 4 faculties.

Our exams and library humans at work are astoundingly awesome, friendly and efficient.

What the fuck is this (inevitably racist) EU noise? https://disabled.social/@bbcworld@botsin.space/111489415909772051

Banning people from quietly wearing religious symbols or certain types of clothing e.g. hijabs or abayas is not a neutral act.

This would make me want to wear such things to say "fuck you" because what is seen as neutral/normal is equally coded, just not on minority faith/ethnicity and culture grounds.

TeamViewer is my friend, it means when I have to deal with "Apple Helpline" calls from my 72yr old dyslexic Mum, I can see what's wrong.

Today's issues were:
"Every time I open a folder, it shows me everything not just the folder" - Finder had got into Column view so I changed that.

"Abode (she means Adobe Reader) says I am on a 7 day trial, I didn't download that!" - 7 day trial is v prominent in the sidepane, Mum hadn't clicked it yet, but it was distracting her. I turned off sidepane.

NatalyaD,
@NatalyaD@disabled.social avatar

It's just occurred to me that TeamViewer will work on the iPad & iPhone, so I shall do some installing at my next visit.

I also helped Mum download a PDF from one of her organisation websites and set her browser to save everything to desktop as she actually had 4 of the PDF in her Downloads but couldn't find it.

Then I saw her attempts at data entry for Stepdad's business. Separate file for each group of records. Not sure I rate her transcription accuracy either cos dyslexia & scattiness 😬.

NatalyaD,
@NatalyaD@disabled.social avatar

@kim If she could find it amongst the 702468348 files and folders already on there.

Maybe if I did symlinked it AND made it some icon she recognised like Winnie the Poo (altho Winnie the Poo was "open new Claris Works text document" in 1993 so it would need to be something else)

Moving my office from the spare room upstairs to the room just off our kitchen, got half way through moving my PC down and discovered that things propped up against the wall there have all gone mouldy, so have had to stop until the damp proofing guy’s been to have a look.

Fed up of rental houses in the UK.

They're a brilliant account to follow.

I visited their premises just before Covid happened and it was interesting, lovely people and very welcoming and friendly.

I love how they are unapologetically and consistently trans supportive.
