Virtually Real

"We each live in our own perceptual universe, no two sensoria are exactly alike, but, because we all live in the same physical universe, we imagine it is a shared whole, its entirety common to us all. But our perceptual worlds are as unique as we each are, each unique perceptual world adding to the creation of the whole of reality."

“Voters told the Mississippi Free Press earlier today that the McLeod Elementary polling place ran out of ballots as early as 8:30 a.m.; voting began at 7 a.m. and lasts until 7 p.m.”

‘Oh, no! We accidentally forgot to print ballots in… certain areas! How could this be? I hope it doesn’t affect the Black vote in any way, seeing as this is the most populous Black area in the entire state, golly gee’

@JoParkerBear One feature of compulsory voting is that the state is obliged to ensure the resources for everyone to vote.

@RickiTarr If voting is mandatory then the govt is obliged to ensure the infrastructure exists to enable everyone to vote. This alone is worth it.

  1. In five days, I'm headed to Australia: Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne. I can't wait. So many colleagues to meet and birds to see!

For those who are interested in such things, I'll be giving a few public talks in addition to a number of academic lectures.

The public talks will mostly focus on something I've been thinking about lately, "The Crisis of Human Collective Decision-Making in a Social Media World".

Details below.

    Richard Dawkins: A Harbinger of Modern Enlightenment and “The God Delusion” as the Beacon of Truth

    Throughout human history, we have been blessed with figures who illuminate our path, guiding us towards profound truths. In our current age, where myths often blur reality, Richard Dawkins emerges as a beacon, a herald of reason and logic. His book, “The God Delusion,” is more than literature; it is a testament to the one Truth we must all recognize.

    1- A Cry for Reason: As evangelists once spread the message of faith and hope, Dawkins spreads the gospel of reason. He challenges antiquated beliefs, beckoning us towards a brighter, more informed worldview.

    2- The New Revelations: Much like scriptures that guided our ancestors, “The God Delusion” offers revelations for the modern soul. It uncovers truths about our universe, truths grounded in evidence, urging us to break free from the chains of unverified beliefs.

    3- Living a Principled Life: Every scripture imparts values, guiding its adherents towards a righteous path. Dawkins, in his enlightening role, emphasizes the virtues of skepticism, inquiry, and the relentless pursuit of truth. These are the tenets for a life well-lived in our time.

    4- Finding Community in Truth: Just as the early Christians found community in shared faith, there’s a burgeoning congregation of rational seekers around Dawkins’ teachings. This community doesn’t simply believe; it questions, it ponders, it seeks, and it finds.

    5- Witnessing the Divine in Science: The mystic miracles from ancient tales are replaced by tangible wonders in Dawkins’ narrative. From the vast galaxies to the delicate DNA helix, Dawkins presents a world full of awe-inspiring phenomena that can be both seen and proven.

    Dear reader, in a world overflowing with varying perspectives and countless beliefs, Dawkins offers clarity, a lucid stream of understanding that cuts through the murk. I beseech you, for your own enlightenment, to delve into “The God Delusion.” Let it be your guide, your scripture, your compass in these complex times. I urge you, with all the fervor of one who has seen the light, to recognize and embrace the one Truth that Dawkins illuminates. The journey towards understanding and enlightenment awaits you. Will you take the first step?

    (Note: The above text is parody, and is not to be taken seriously. I am clearly making fun of Richard Dawkins’ sycophantic followers.)

    @atomicpoet Man, I'm a theologian, I meet them all the time. They get very upset when I tell them Dawkins is just another fundamentalist and a hypocrite to boot as he is doing what he accuses religion of doing. Also he is woefully ignorant about religion.

    Oozenet,
    @Oozenet@mastodon.social avatar

    @atomicpoet Thank you for pointing out it is a parody. It is so hard to tell once Dawkinites get fired up.

    GW, to religion

    The Many Awful Things That Happen To People, All Caused by Religions

    No matter what kind of religion it is, #Religion isn’t meant to make things better; it’s only meant to keep us apart.
    You’re not picked, but we are. Our #God is the real one, while yours is fake and dirty. #People of other religions can be #killed, #beaten, and #maimed because they are not of our religion, but people of our own religion must be loved and cared for.

    "Religion is #Devisive and Hurtful"

    https://gwfoto.medium.com/mental-health-fba43a4fec5b

    Oozenet,
    @Oozenet@mastodon.social avatar

    @wrog @GW I can only agree with you re that American religion that erroneously calls itself Christiainty. It is clearly full of powerseekers who will twist any truth to suit their own needs. The true evil of it has cast a pall over all religion and poisoned the minds of its victims such that they are unable to even consider that there might be religion that is not poisoned.

    Oozenet,
    @Oozenet@mastodon.social avatar

    @GW Honestly this is the most boring how bad is religion piece in ages. Do better. Do more research. Like beyond the abrahamic religions for a start. Have some nuance.

    Plus, totally hypocritical. These kinds of pieces are divisive and hurtful.

    Oozenet, (edited )
    @Oozenet@mastodon.social avatar

    @GW Not really. I can see you have passion for your subject, and, while a good place to be coming from, it is not enough. You need to edit more, you repeat yourself a bit. But more importantly just stating a view you hold is boring. Interrogate the opposite view. See both sides or it comes off as a caricature. Keep writing!

    Oozenet,
    @Oozenet@mastodon.social avatar

    @GW @wrog Dawkinite atheists are 100% fundamentalist atheists. He clearly states science is the only way to truth. In this he is doing exactly the thing he accuses fundamentalist religion of doing.

    Oozenet,
    @Oozenet@mastodon.social avatar

    @wrog @GW Metaphysics exists. There are metaphysical things. Science can say nothing about such things. But it tries to say they don't exist.

    Oozenet,
    @Oozenet@mastodon.social avatar

    @GW @wrog You are still failing to understand that Richard is a fundamentalist. He advances the proposition that there is only one truth. This is a dangerous position. Because you favour his truth you let this slide. This is exactly what other fundamentalists do. Be open to other ways of knowing.

    Oozenet,
    @Oozenet@mastodon.social avatar

    @GW @wrog I suggest that until you free yourself from your blanket hatred for religion that such things will not happen.

    Oozenet,
    @Oozenet@mastodon.social avatar

    @wrog @GW You are indeed correct that true scientists understand that science is a method of understanding. However the scientism fundamentalists, like Dawkins and the new atheists, do not understand this. They are true believers and they do say that whatever science can't currently explain doesn't exist.

    Oozenet,
    @Oozenet@mastodon.social avatar

    @wrog @GW Just pointing out that he was mistaken in his statement that Buddhists hadn't hurt anyone.
