Virtually Real

"We each live in our own perceptual universe, no two sensoria are exactly alike, but, because we all live in the same physical universe, we imagine it is a shared whole, its entirety common to us all. But our perceptual worlds are as unique as we each are, each unique perceptual world adding to the creation of the whole of reality."

@RickiTarr If voting is mandatory then the govt is obliged to ensure the infrastructure exists to enable everyone to vote. This alone is worth it.

Richard Dawkins: A Harbinger of Modern Enlightenment and “The God Delusion” as the Beacon of Truth

Throughout human history, we have been blessed with figures who illuminate our path, guiding us towards profound truths. In our current age, where myths often blur reality, Richard Dawkins emerges as a beacon, a herald of reason and logic. His book, “The God Delusion,” is more than literature; it is a testament to the one Truth we must all recognize.

1- A Cry for Reason: As evangelists once spread the message of faith and hope, Dawkins spreads the gospel of reason. He challenges antiquated beliefs, beckoning us towards a brighter, more informed worldview.

2- The New Revelations: Much like scriptures that guided our ancestors, “The God Delusion” offers revelations for the modern soul. It uncovers truths about our universe, truths grounded in evidence, urging us to break free from the chains of unverified beliefs.

3- Living a Principled Life: Every scripture imparts values, guiding its adherents towards a righteous path. Dawkins, in his enlightening role, emphasizes the virtues of skepticism, inquiry, and the relentless pursuit of truth. These are the tenets for a life well-lived in our time.

4- Finding Community in Truth: Just as the early Christians found community in shared faith, there’s a burgeoning congregation of rational seekers around Dawkins’ teachings. This community doesn’t simply believe; it questions, it ponders, it seeks, and it finds.

5- Witnessing the Divine in Science: The mystic miracles from ancient tales are replaced by tangible wonders in Dawkins’ narrative. From the vast galaxies to the delicate DNA helix, Dawkins presents a world full of awe-inspiring phenomena that can be both seen and proven.

Dear reader, in a world overflowing with varying perspectives and countless beliefs, Dawkins offers clarity, a lucid stream of understanding that cuts through the murk. I beseech you, for your own enlightenment, to delve into “The God Delusion.” Let it be your guide, your scripture, your compass in these complex times. I urge you, with all the fervor of one who has seen the light, to recognize and embrace the one Truth that Dawkins illuminates. The journey towards understanding and enlightenment awaits you. Will you take the first step?

(Note: The above text is parody, and is not to be taken seriously. I am clearly making fun of Richard Dawkins’ sycophantic followers.)

@atomicpoet Thank you for pointing out it is a parody. It is so hard to tell once Dawkinites get fired up.

Oozenet,
@Oozenet@mastodon.social avatar

@atomicpoet Man, I'm a theologian, I meet them all the time. They get very upset when I tell them Dawkins is just another fundamentalist and a hypocrite to boot as he is doing what he accuses religion of doing. Also he is woefully ignorant about religion.

Google Scholar is a flaming piece of shit. Why do we use it for scholarly evaluation?

Here, it misattributes 4873 citations — a decent count for entire research career — from Keeling and Rohani's landmark book, giving them instead to the authors who wrote a book review of the book.

Yet, there's no correction or appeal process.

Book review to which the citations are ascribed.

Oozenet,
@Oozenet@mastodon.social avatar

@ct_bergstrom Because the academy is just another neoliberal hellscape. Oh wait, that was a rhetorical question wasn't it.

Has anyone tried the new Activity Pub plugin for Wordpress?

It’s out of beta now.

I have a Wordpress site (which I need as an author) and a Mastodon instance (which I need because I am a control freak).

If Activity Pub works as it should, I won’t need both — but we can’t get Activity Pub to work on a Wordpress site.

Has anyone tried this?

I will trade legal analysis for technical help. (Fediverse economics)

Russians lost 1,051 lives on the Tavriia front today. The total losses of that day amounted to 1,380 people

143 units of the enemy's military equipment were destroyed. In particular, 31 tanks, 74 armoured fighting vehicles, 6 artillery systems, 3 anti-aircraft guns, 18 unmanned aerial vehicles and 10 units of motor vehicles. An enemy ammunition storage point was also destroyed. Another 63 units of the occupiers' self-propelled guns were damaged, in particular, 20 tanks.

"You probably had a infection and just didn't notice" to me seems one of those attempts at avoiding cognitive dissonance.

Because if it were possible not to have caught it yet, that'd mean we could have prevented ... pretty much everything, and it's impossible we did something wrong! So clearly, the person who didn't get infected is incorrect.

Sigh.

My new favorite thing I've encountered on Wikipedia- the notice to discourage everyone from adding their cat pictures to the cat article, at risk of being immediately reverted

Oozenet,
@Oozenet@mastodon.social avatar

@muchlibrary This is bullshit. They should let people put their own cats but not let them revert back if someone else puts their cat.

Oozenet,

@argentcorvid @muchlibrary Yup, that's what I said. But my idea requires no coding work. Plus people get to see their cat being up immediately. Because we all love instant gratification.

Once you know that someone genuinely and sincerely believes in quackery - such as, but not limited to: homeopathy, astrology, magical gemstones ... - do you, too, struggle with taking their opinions on rational questions seriously still?

If so, do you - and if so how - overcome this in professional settings?

Oozenet,
@Oozenet@mastodon.social avatar

@larsmb You are using the tools of one domain to assess things in other domains. And you are acting as if that domain is the only domain. You are doing the same thing as the people who say their god is the only god.

Oozenet,
@Oozenet@mastodon.social avatar

@larsmb Once again you are asserting that there is only one way to obtain knowledge and that materialism is the only reality.

Oozenet,
@Oozenet@mastodon.social avatar

@larsmb But my friend, that is exactly what you are doing. You are making a claim about magic rocks and astrology. They are religion and spirituality.

You cannot separate magic from religion. The difference between magic and religion is that religion is what we do and magic what what they do. The label magic serves only as an othering tool.
