    @LeviKornelsen significant natural disaster springs to mind. If it's a biggie, people can't help but build around it.

    The other thought that occurs to me is migration, forced or otherwise... you've picked out some of the reasons it may occur already but the journey itself can leave pretty significant marks.

    Always a big fan of Innana Descends into the Underworld. It's a messy parable about grief, sisterhood and revenge with gnarly magic and the terrifying spirits of the Sumerian afterlife.

    Half of the people in this village remember history, the other half are doomed to repeat history. You may ask a villager for one take on current events to ascertain which kind of villager they are.

    What do you ask?

    @Binder barges in and shouts "what the devil just happened???"

    In May I'm going to Cruel World with my step-daughter. Turns out I'm going to be flying down by myself and she's joining me later. Odds are I'll be staying Friday night on my own, stumbling distance from Boardner's in Hollywood. Not sure if I'm too old for an '80s night before the '80s festival. It will be a tough choice between that and a quiet night alone.

    PaddyHatchet,
    @PaddyHatchet@dice.camp avatar

    @rivetgeek I vote double down on the 80's!

    Also for an out of towner is Cruel World like a Rennaisance Faire but for the 80s instead of the middle ages?

    Fwaaaaaaaaah, I'm up to the Constantine's Mansion/Magic Sword level in Thief: The Dark Project!

    I love how hard the designers committed on this level... not the wildest environment I've seen in video games, but they really dug deep for the surreal on this one.

    Love it. These are some of my favourite parts of this fictional world.

    Well, one of the crew has suggested a round of some Kill Team, so probably time to give the old Eldar box a rummage.

    Knew I'd kept those for a reason (that wasn't actually the reason, it was more a sense of nostalgia, sunk cost, possible resale value and the non-zero possibility I would return to this or an adjacent hobby).

    Also I know their called Aeldari or some other nonsense now, I'm too old for GW's rewrites.

    Scratching the old itch with a splash out into 's Eldritch Horror... and oh boy.

    In grand Fantasy Flight tradition we have improbable numbers of counters and cards, some doing double duty depending which side your looking at (good for weight, difficult if the table gets jostled).

    A LOT cleaner than Arkham Horror for sure, and I kinda like it wearing its enthusiasm for the old Masks of Nyarlathotep module on its sleeve, but me oh my... 1/2

    PaddyHatchet,
    @PaddyHatchet@dice.camp avatar

    @golgaloth for the investigators to communicate or more generally?

    Not sure what I'd use if we're going with a "world map" style game. Its honestly something I've never tried, my first thought was some kind of epistolary game 😅

    PaddyHatchet,
    @PaddyHatchet@dice.camp avatar

    @golgaloth I suppose one thing the game series does include is the cycle of finding clues and using them to defeat horrors... left to my own devices, let's drill down on that cycle.

    You travel the world, investigating phenomena to give you Clues. Stability (basically hitpoints) is negative Clues.

    If you can focus enough clues and maybe some luck or other resource the right Nexus you shed the clues and regain your Stability, if you fail in that you learn more... get more clues, until death

    PaddyHatchet,
    @PaddyHatchet@dice.camp avatar

    @golgaloth that's more the boardgames vibe in very hasty mock-up.

    If I were doing an epistolary one I'd probably just use an Oracle system or neo-choose your own adventure ala 1000 Year Old Vampire.

    Hey , looking to cook more at home in the new year. Hit me with your best, easy to make and fast recipes. Needs to appeal to a picky 12-year old and ideally to an even pickier 5-year old. Can’t use seafood, as my wife hates it.

    PaddyHatchet,
    @PaddyHatchet@dice.camp avatar

    @Tim_Eagon Paddy's Grandad's Australian Curry

    500g sausages of choice (I use soy-based fake beef)
    2 large potatoes, diced
    1 large onion, diced
    Oil
    I cup sultanas
    I 400g can of tomatoes
    Three heaped tbsp Keen's curry powder
    1 can Mountain Culture Moon Dust Stout

    Fry potato and onion to golden brown, brown sausages. Add tomatoes, sultanas and curry. Simmer until sultanas turn back into grapes, adding water as necessary. Drink the stout.

    Who do you think does the best version of Spanish Bombs?

    Here's the choices:

    1. The Clash - Spanish Bombs (Original)

    2. Ceci Bastida - Spanish Bombs

    3. Melodee Fernandez - Spanish Bombs

    A friend of mine is looking for simple but good strategy games for her 17-year-old son. He likes Fluxx and Troika.

    He does not like games with a big back story that take hours to play.

    Catan or Carcassone are too complex (and Arkham Horror is TOTALLY out of the running).

    Basically, games that you can play in 30-60 minutes, NOT games that take 30-60 minutes to set up, and then hours to play.

    PaddyHatchet,
    @PaddyHatchet@dice.camp avatar

    @nukehavoc if Arkham Horror is a bit much but they like that vibe, we like Elder Sign as a substantially more manageable version.

    PaddyHatchet,
    @PaddyHatchet@dice.camp avatar

    @nukehavoc fair enough. We have got some good mileage out of it, though the tablet version takes a lot of the mental load out of it.
