The European Commission has made a legally binding request for information, asking Bing to provide internal documents & data not disclosed in Bing's previous response. The RFI is based on the suspicion that Bing may have breached the DSA for risks linked to generative AI, such as so-called ‘hallucinations', the viral dissemination of deepfakes, as well as the automated manipulation of services that can mislead voters.

While not as well known as some of the others on this list, the Brave browser uses AI to provide fast, accurate results. It has the added bonus of not tracking users or their searches, removing privacy fears that your data will be sold to third-parties. In an update earlier this month, the company said it received nearly 10 billion queries in the past year—some 27 million queries per day. The engine also supports multiple languages in its responses. https://www.fastcompany.com/91123246/ai-native-search-bing-perplexity-google-brave?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social

This good news.

Today, the European Commission designated Apple with respect to iPadOS as a gatekeeper under the Digital Markets Act (“DMA”). Apple now has six months to ensure full compliance of iPadOS with the DMA obligations.

After decades in this space, privacy eroding adtech has flourished in great part due to a lack of effective enforcement. I don’t think we can rely on the UK ICO.

Meta Q4 2023 earnings call.

"we continue to monitor the active regulatory landscape, including the increasing legal and
regulatory headwinds in the EU and the US that could significantly impact our business and our financial results. Of note, the FTC is seeking to substantially modify our existing consent order and impose additional restrictions on our ability to operate. We are contesting this matter, but if we are unsuccessful it would have an adverse impact on our business."

Zuckerberg on DMA/Apple: "I don't think that the Apple thing is going to have any difference for us because I
think that the way that they've implemented it, I would be very surprised if any
developer chose to go into the alternative app stores that they have. They've made
it so onerous, and, I think, so at odds with the intent of what the EU regulation was
that I think it's just going to be very difficult for anyone, including ourselves, to really
seriously entertain what they're doing there"

An example of the positive impact of the on competition and iOS default browser choice

Why did Apple and Google make it hard to switch default browsers for so many years?

Because it's a powerful way to block competitors.

Just look at what happened to Brave installs on iPhone in the EU when Apple rolled out a new default browser choice screen on March 6th:

Hmm Google's Compliance report https://drive.proton.me/urls/14TN1ZVTHC#jGJfjhkKHaGm, page 114 suggests their approach to search engine & browser choice screens meets Art 6(3) of the DMA. Respectfully, I don't think it does - but perhaps Google can provide an example from an EU user today, of their experience ?

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has found that Twitter/X owner Elon Musk gave staff orders that would have violated a FTC consent decree on privacy and security — if they'd been carried out. It turns out that the only reason Twitter/X remained in compliance was because its staff disobeyed their then-CEO. https://mashable.com/article/twitter-files-x-musk-staff-ftc-order
