Dodging clouds ☁️☁️☁️
About 90% illuminated moon, waxing gibbous 20.04.2024 about 8.30pm.

Very quick shots just after twilight as cloud moved in.
These are the best two from about 40 rapid shots.

Shot with a Skywatcher Skymax 127 with Canon EOS700D

90% illuminated disc of moon against black, starless background. Shadow line on far left of the moon. Top two thirds of the disc covered by high, whispy, fine high cloud which darken the disc and obscure some detail.

When we hear that is the hottest year ever, it is hard to understand the extent. Maybe it is only just a little bit hotter? Unfortunately no. I am back from a symposium on marine environment at Tohoku University, and here is the picture that I saw. Regarding surface , 2023 is hotter to an extent that was never observed since we monitor that temperature globally. https://climate.copernicus.eu/record-high-global-sea-surface-temperatures-continue-august

@charles_plessy
Do we know what the tipping point is for increasing sea surface temperatures and decreases in biodiversity which will affect the whole life / food cycles of everything on this planet?

Might stop paying into my retirement fund ...

Quite a bit unfortunately!

For this I used a 6 inch Newtonian reflector telescope with F8 focal length (1.2 meters), a 2.5 X Barlow lens, a ZWO ASI 662mc planetary camera plus an equatorial mount tripod with tracking motors and a laptop to process the images.

All entry level kit but not including the laptop probably the best part of £1,000.

Easiest place to start is probably with YouTubers. There are loads.

Astrobiscuit is my favourite but he's British and you might not get his humour 🤣
https://youtube.com/@Astrobiscuit?si=jKiQOJAJvVH6Nasz

He's also got a massive Discord server where you can ask loads of people all your telescope questions.

Ed Ting is US, is really straightforward, does really good reviews and tells you which telescopes are best for which thing https://youtube.com/

Went to the yesterday, and watched on a regular screen. I'll watch it again, on an IMAX screen if possible. The visual design is so full of intricate details, and the world resonates with big ideas, barely hinted at

I'm going to watch this tonight (on a regular screen). I probably expect to be wowed more by the visuals and spectacle than the story but keeping my fingers crossed it all ties up 🫰

I thought I read Gareth Edwards copied his approach for Monsters. He did a roadtrip through Mexico for that and added visuals afterwards. I think he did the same here with Thailand and Asia (but with a much bigger budget).

@greenback

I enjoyed the movie at a 3.5/5 level.

The two leads were convincing. The visuals, sets, aesthetics and mood were good, extra points for Radiohead in the soundtrack.

Unfortunately it's the story that lets it down. The trope of mad army Colonel has been done to death. I didn't believe that character. Lots of the AI stuff is sketchy.

The ending is bleakly sad.

Josh isn't hugging his wife at the end. It's an AI copy with her last memories who thinks it's her.

    I haven't watched Ahsoka yet for two reasons. Firstly, I'm waiting for the whole season to drop so I can binge. Secondly, I'm worried nothing can come close to Andor now and I won't enjoy it.

    The wait for Andor Season 2 is long! (and Severance and well!). That writer's strike is really going to push back production times.

    I never really watched the animated Star Wars universe so I don't have that buy in.. I'll still give it a try when it's all available to stream but I'll check out early if it's not for me.

    Caught up with now on 🍏 TV

    Whew, that last episode was a biggy!

    I know it's taken a different path from Asimov's books but it's still really compelling TV and also some of the best effects and aesthetics I've seen.

    Role on Friday for the season 2 finale!

    I really appreciate the way they've taken the TV show. Having the genetic dynasty was a really smart move to keep continuity with actors and like you say, Lee Pace is giving the performance of his life.
