It allows stupid people to have a community where they feel smart, and that they know something most people don’t.

I bet that’s not something they are used to

The company I work for had record earnings recently and there were high spirits, long praising newsletter from the CEO. Praise for maintaining a very stable production and higher output with fewer people than competitors.

Until our closest competitors reported their earnings. Which were higher, not surprising as they are bigger than us. Then it was doom and gloom

All of a sudden we had to have substantial budget cuts, and couldn’t rehire to fill a position for someone who had left.

Crazy huh, earned a boatload of money, but someone else earned a bit more. So then we have to cut expenses and optimize.

They still had the audacity recently to try to push the company “spirit and mindset” to employees. Something something buzzwords…

They will still discard you as fast as yesteryears iPhone.

fuck the manosphere

I just want to vent a bit - I started seeing someone a few weeks ago. Old fling that I ran into through some friends that got rekindled, and I was excited that it seemed like more than just casual hookups this time. But there were some yellow flags I ignored that turned out to be red flags, and now I’m feeling frustrated and...

Drop the “smart” part of the tv and use an external device like the Shield TV, heck even Apple TV is better than anything running WebOS or Tizen

They still do their bloated framework and launcher outside the US.

I was supposed to be at a course at 9, two hours away. Was reminded by outlook 8.45. Gee thanks Outlook, very helpful.

Worst part, is that you come off as lazy, a slack or stupid for forgetting something that neurotypical would never forget.

I normally add stuff like this to my private Google calendar for that exact reason… But I forgot…

It seems like they are going out of their way to remove good features. Like they removed the option to right click the taskbar and open task manager. They since added it back, but only because of user demand.

They have removed quick access to disabling the network, seeing and changing ip settings.

I can’t remember all the annoying issues, but there’s a lot.

I hate that it has become a general thing to ruin user experience and possibilities of customization. Google is doing the same with android.

Wrong. OnePlus One, released in April, (as invite only) 2014 had USB-C.

I was wrong, sorry. It was not until OnePlus two.

Ragerist,
@Ragerist@lemmy.world avatar

Holy shit sorry. You are right, I was sure it was USB -C.

It must have been the OnePlus two then. I distinctly remember being the only one having USB-C anywhere I went.

You mean British English and Simplified English?

I bought a new Lenovo with Windows 11 preinstalled and apparently if I want to use this laptop I need to have a Microsoft account (lemmy.world)

Is there any way around this? Why is Windows doing this? Don’t get me wrong, I got the laptop to install a Linux distro anyway, but it’s helpful for others (especially my older family members) to just use Windows when they need to print a paper or do a small task, so I would have liked to keep it. Microsoft really lost me...

If you have another computer, download the Windows 11 iso from Microsoft.

Then download Rufus and use it to make a bootable USB key from the before mentioned Iso. It will ask if you want to disable Microsoft account requirement, as well as other things like TPM requirement and the likes.

Install Windows from that USB key

But then comes the issue, which government? As Starlink is global infrastructure.

Linux file system developer: we're severely under-resourced (lore.kernel.org)

I’ve said this previously, and I’ll say it again: we’re severely under-resourced. Not just XFS, the whole fsdevel community. As a developer and later a maintainer, I’ve learnt the hard way that there is a very large amount of non-coding work is necessary to build a good filesystem. There’s enough not-really-coding work...

Tetanus is a horrible way to go, even for anti-waxx’ers and even worse if it’s their kids. Who have little to say in the matter.

So you are saying that they are protected for the rest of their life?

Ragerist,

Realized?? They knew all the time, and didn’t give a shit.

It’s more likely that they have pushed too far, and users are pushing back. They will dial it back a bit, and hope people forget.

New Anti-Consumer MacBook Pros - Teardown And Repair Assessment - Apple Silicon M1/M2 (youtu.be)

No surprises here. Just like the lockdown on iPhone screen and part replacements, Macbooks suffer from the same Apple’s anti-repair and anti-consumer bullshit. Battery glued, ssd soldered in and can’t even swap parts with other official parts. 6000$ laptop and you don’t even own it.

How is pirating software a thing?

I understand that sharing video, photos, documents etc. is relatively safe because the data is not executed in the processor as instructions. How come people are willing to download and install pirated software though? How can one be confident that it does not contain malicious addons? Are people just don’t know the risks? Or...

One of the techniques is called buffer overflow. Where you target a flaw in some software. Computers are logic, they will do EXACTLY what you tell them. Imagine if an image viewer uses an dll to process jpg. That dll expects a very specific header. If this is not handled correctly and a malicious attacker crafts the header to be slightly larger and the larger part contains executable code. This code spills over in the adjacent memory area. The OS then reads this as code to run… and boom you are in.

This is oversimplified and proberly not explained correctly, but its something like that; and that kids, is why its important to update your OS and software.

Sometimes they find bugs like this, that have existed for many years before being discovered.
