Notice how, as soon as the smoke stopped drifting over the Northeast, we're not getting any news about the canadian wildfires anymore

One of the top 3 articles in searches is "Canadian wildfires pretext for wrecking the economy in the name of 'Climate Change'"

As if climate change isn't real and isn't wrecking the economy right now

They're using the same strategy to kill climate action as they did covid lockdowns and track-and-trace: denialism and fear-mongering over the economy

SRLevine,
@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

@pleaseclap We need billboards with that quippy phrase "the economy is just rich people's yacht money" (I might be paraphrasing slightly)

Big mad because video footage shows the bike thief came into the building because car driving neighbors didn’t check when they left the garage and someone came in when they left the door open, stole all the bikes in the building. I’m sure it would be a totally different reaction if a biker went out the garage and left it open and a car was stolen. I miss my bikes.

SRLevine,
@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

@skinnylatte Ooh, that is obnoxious. I've had a bike stolen before (someone cut the lock) and it's one of those experiences that is just super frustrating.

🤦🏿‍♂️ the average American isn't worse than the average person in other countries in the world. That's not what's going on.

Our problem, is that all of our institutions are configured to allow the most racist, sexist, ignorant, and violent minority of us, to terrorize the rest of us without punishment or consequence.

The net result is a flow of our society away from what the vast majority of us want, and towards objectively horrible outcomes.

Like this.

what's the best way to indicate that a piece of art that's been posted is for sale? I have a note in my bio but don't tend to say anything in specific posts bc it feels spammy. The #/fediGiftShop tag doesn't seem very active.

SRLevine,
@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

@inherentlee If you do your sales through a different site (or maybe even if direct via venmo/cashapp/paypal) you could just include a link in the post, maybe with a price?

@oliphant I am, but I have a HIGHLY curated feed that's my local buy nothing group, friends who post kid/pet/travel pics, and NPR. I never click links to anything but NPR. But that sort of optimization took years of being very careful of what I clicked on to achieve. I don't blame anyone for not being there at all.
I was almost out entirely in early 2020, but then with COVID and having friends in medicine I wanted to make sure I actually heard if one of them died 😬 .

It's important to teach how meditation works (in a health class for example) so that creepy cult persons can't exploit those who have never "focused on their breathing" for 40 seconds in their life and make them think a simple and effective exercise is some kind of new age magic.

Also, it is something people should know to deal with stress. Have you ever met someone who just... doesn't breathe-- they're wound up like a homemade speaker coil.

SRLevine,
@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

@futurebird Even incorporating some basic yoga and associated breathing into phys ed might be enough.

Yesterday I was looking for some information about HRT leading up to surgery and DuckDuckGo had a link to a Reddit comment that no longer existed.

And I think that’s when it really hit me how much this Reddit shit impacts me and other trans people. There is so much information about HRT, and GRS, and understudied phenomena that only exists in comments on Reddit. Life saving information. Invaluable medical information.

And some corporate assholes can just fuck with that on a whim.

bebatjof, to accessibility

Question / Suggestion about CamelCase.

For screenreaders, it's better if hashtags have each word capitalised. So not but . Yet, the suggestions that pop out while typing the hashtag are mostly all lowercase. Could this be improved? Even if I start typing TheDawnOf it will still suggest thedawnofeverything though I have only used the one with CamelCase myself. Accessibility should be made the default as much as possible.

SRLevine,
@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

@inherentlee @bebatjof This is such a common complaint (and I came here to give the same response) if you do develop a tool that can fix the problem that would be amazing.

SRLevine,
@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

@inherentlee @bebatjof I am very much not a programmer (touches nose and says not it).

Also hashtags in unlisted posts are not discoverable I think (this might have ended up an unlisted thread because that's my default posting setting).

Once you know that the biggest impact on climate change is billionaires and industry:

You have three choices:

  1. go about your life unchanged

  2. direct action and/or lobbying (this is not signing petitions)

  3. change your lifestyle so at least you're doing something even if it has minimal impact

If you choose 1 because you think 3 is pointless that's self-centered jerk behavior.

It would be great if more people opted for 2, but if you're 3 you can give money to people in 2 to help.

Why does the wild fire smoke seem to get worse over the course of the day… then reset over night?

The mornings have been OK but 3pm in NYC yesterday?? It was like the end of the world. My students said “this is so apocalyptic!” And they thought we should go upstate and have class in a bunker.

Fire would burn more easily in higher temperatures, and regular city pollution increases over the day since more energy is being used… is that why it gets worse?

SRLevine,
@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

@futurebird Some of it is a moisture thing. Particles will tend to settle under more humid conditions and therefore not disperse as well in the air (ie: at night when the cooler temperatures raise the water content of the air). As the humidity drops over the course of the day particles move more easily in the air and you get worse air quality.

*It's why if you get really desperate for clean indoor air you can run a humidifier along with an air filter.

SRLevine,
@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

@sec_yote_agenda @22 I've been doing the AltText for one of the xkcd bots and it's been really interesting trying to do even Munroe's really simply drawn comics. The feedback I've gotten from screen reader users for comics is to provide enough information that the user can get the punchline/joke. Sometimes this means being hyper specific and sometimes you can be kind of vague.

Also if you use the Alt4Me hashtag some of us follow that and try to help if we see it.

Parallel universes are real! You shall be sent to live in one... forever.

You will get a choice between 5 universes that each have a similar collection of languages though technology & culture may be very, possibly hazardously, different.

To make your choice you may request one (1) kind of typical artifact. This will be fetched from each universe, you may compare to make your choice.

Electronics will be disabled. If the artifact doesn't exist... you get nothing.

What do you request?

It's a close call between steampunk and awesome plants do wild things, but let's be real I'm a chemist and the odds of my finding a mad scientist's laboratory to shelter in are much higher in B than in D.

E sounds like bad new bears, since if no one is even using them for art any more...
