Favorite stars don't cost money and can make someone smile (or at least feel seen) so I use them often. I'm not being weird at you specifically, I'm being weird at everyone...

To my great shame since I started at UCI and have a UCI owned computer I haven't been using a reference manager (mostly because I haven't been doing any primary writing, plenty of secondary writing and editing, but I haven't been managing the references for any of the papers I've been on). I think I need to install zotero before the situation gets any worse, so pray for me...

(I used zotero on my personal laptop, but the version I was using is pretty out of date at this point)

Going to brag a little bit here about one of the graduate students: she's getting her PhD in slightly less than 4 years!!! w00t!!!

She's a biologist who started basically at the same time I did in the Spitale lab and then moved to the Paegel lab and if you'd like to see a defense that should be excellent (I did some synthetic chemistry for both projects so I'm biased) it will be streamed on zoom at 2PM Pacific time today

@futurebird I think you've opened yourself up to people posting every funny take on this they can find. I need to bookmark this to check later.

To the jerk that felt the need to zip past me on a residential street only to brake and double park as soon as you got in front of me: I hope tomorrow has a problem just large enough that it ruins your weekend.

Newly discovered problem with the cast iron pan. That 8" pan is measured on the bottom and not the top. And the usual lid I use to cover a pan and finish my egg and cheese sandwich (melt the cheese and slightly toast the bread after adding the egg) doesn't really fit right since it's basically sitting on the bottom. I might need to buy a pot lid specifically for this pan? Ugh (the one I use is the lid for my largest pot).

ETA: I have larger lid I forgot about! Thanks @NilaJones

Do you have a family cookbook in PDF or as a series of scans? Boy, I'd love to help you put them on the archive. DM or ping me.

SRLevine,
@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

@textfiles I have a hilariously dated hand-me-down cookbook from my grandma that was a sisterhood publication form her temple many years ago. I've never digitized it, but I can look at doing that if you'd be interested. Might need to find someone who is willing to borrow it near me and do decent resolution photos/scanning (I don't have a smart phone).

This cooking in cast iron thing is definitely going to require a bit of practice (my egg stuck to the pan).

That looked really painful, hopefully Rodrigues is ok (an elbow to the head/neck area and he went down really hard since he was moving with a lot of speed), he did make it off the ice under his own power, which is a good sign.

Just finished a book where I was clearly not the target audience, but it was a compelling read. I think there were some drawbacks to it being YA (there were some time jumps and lack of exposition at times), but the whole concept was really cool.

17 year old Malik starts college at an HBCU that is only open to Black people with magic. It's got some plot twists regular YA readers will see coming, and some you won't.

Serious question: when and in which contexts did calling people "individuals" emerge as a common practice, as a synonym for people? Or "an individual" for "a person"?

I ask because I'm noticing it in student writing, and I associate it with police-speak. I don't know if it's in some corners of social science or medicine too

??

SRLevine,
@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

@inquiline I think it might crop-up in the social sciences (maybe psychology?) since it sounds familiar from when I had to take some of those courses as an undergrad, which wasn't exactly recently. Might also show up in economics texts.

A theoretical question about the Microsoft Recall thing I'm not sure I've seen floating around. My knowledge of these things isn't extensive and it might be silly however.

Many health care providers use Zoom or similar services for remote visits. If recall isn't storing things in an encrypted format is that a massive potential HIPPA violation?

Other people who live in humid climes and buy garlic powder in the large containers: how do you keep it from becoming a giant unusable mass. This is my second container since I moved here, I thought since the first was powder rather than granulated that was the problem, but the granulated does it too.

(Don't @ me about using garlic powder, it's one of the secrets to a great egg & cheese sandwich and I eat a lot of those, ok?)

SRLevine,
@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

@skinnylatte I think the problem is the container it comes in isn't air tight once you get a little on the lid from shaking it? But putting it in a new container might be an option...

SRLevine,
@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

@skinnylatte I wonder if I did that if it would be fine in the cabinet? Freezer space is at a real premium with the ice cream freezer bowl needing to be stored in there.

@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

The time has come to admit I don't have a good idea of what to use these jars of olive brine for and recover the space in my fridge.

I'm currently trying to convince myself to actually throw it out and not just consolidate to fewer jars.

It's ok to point and laugh at me over this.

SRLevine,
@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

@skinnylatte In this quantity? Would that be more or less than 10 kg of pasta? Because I'm pretty sure my largest pot can't handle more than 1 kg at a time...

SRLevine,
@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

@skinnylatte I'm making a note of your suggestions. I did toss this ridiculous quantity (I had zero space left in the door of the fridge for homemade cold brewed ice team and that was a tragedy), but I have an unopened jar on the counter, so I'll have more in a week or two 😛

SRLevine,
@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

@skinnylatte hmm, I have regular molasses in two types and need to buy more soy sauce anyway. Definitely doable.

Here comes a thread on light pollution from satellites, with a concrete action that you all can take to help push for regulation of satellites in orbit!

Astronomers have been worried about light pollution from satellites (if you've been following me for more than 24 hours, you've perhaps heard a bit about this). Astronomers spent SO much time and effort begging and pleading with Starlink to make their satellites fainter, with mixed results.

SRLevine,
@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

@sundogplanets Whipped out the (wrong field, not at all relevant to the topic) PhD for any weight that might add. Ideally they'd listen to everyone even without the fancy letters, but I'll use them for a good cause since I have them.

@inquiline I love how you occasionally go someplace around here and find peacocks and you ask someone what's up with them and the response is almost always "we don't know, they do what they want and they just sort of appeared one day".

SRLevine,
@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

@inquiline There were a few that used to visit caltech and we were pretty sure their full time home was probably the huntington gardens and the campus was some sort of weekend getaway for them because they weren't consistent, but you did spot them occasionally. Seeing them roaming around loading docks on the weekends was always so weird. This is not a bird habitat!

SRLevine,
@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

@inquiline This was college, which was pre-universal smart phone ownership so I don't have any pics personally. Though I have a distinct memory of going to the lab and seeing a bunch on a Sunday afternoon in a common loading area shared by a few science buildings. They were just wandering in via a passageway from the lawn on the other side of one of the buildings.
