TinyPod: Upcoming Case Turns an Apple Watch Into a Click-Wheel Phone
https://daringfireball.net/linked/2024/05/24/tinypod

Salvo,

@daringfireball it is going to need two things to successfully function as a substitute iPhone;

A decent antenna booster.

The click wheel interface would need to be reliable.

I assume the click wheel will interface with the Digital Crown mechanically.

★ Spotify’s Car Things to Be Rebranded as Car Bricks
https://daringfireball.net/2024/05/spotify_car_brick

Salvo,

@daringfireball this reminds me of when the Holden Commodore VF was released, Holden/GM signed an exclusive deal with Pandora and discontinued CarPlay and Android Auto.

https://www.drive.com.au/news/holden-vf-commodore-advanced-mylink-ever/

4 years later, Pandora ceased operations in Australia.

https://news.com.au/technology/home-entertainment/audio/pandora-no-longer-available-in-australia-and-new-zealand-heres-what-you-need-to-know/

The problem is that the headunit is deeply integrated with Integral car systems like Climate Control so replacing with an aftermarket Headunit is not an option.

Casey Newton: ‘Google’s Broken Link to the Web’
https://daringfireball.net/linked/2024/05/15/newton-google-io

Salvo,

@daringfireball it is a depressing, but accurate vision.

The arms race between ad/tracking blockers and user tracking has escalated to the point that most of the web is completely unreadable.

The content that is readable is vacuous trash, regurgitated by LLMs.

(Except for in a few cases) real journalists and news curators can’t make a living because Ads (and trackers) has monetarily devalued their content.

Pointless NYT Report Says Apple Plans to Improve Siri
https://daringfireball.net/linked/2024/05/10/nyt-siri-story

Salvo,

@daringfireball IMO, the best way to improve Siri is to revert it to Voice Command.

On-device using my on-device data like Contacts and my Music Library.

I don’t want to ask for and get Drake.

I don’t want to ask to “Call Mum’s Mobile” and get “Moms Homestyle Kitchen”.

Reuters: OpenAI to Announce Google Search Competitor on Monday
https://daringfireball.net/linked/2024/05/10/reuters-openai-web-search

Salvo,

@daringfireball LLM search is not what people* want.
Accurate search without LLM-generated content is what people* want.

I want to type in a term, with + and - filters and get what I asked for (with maybe some synonyms or spelling variations down the bottom of the list).

I want to be able to click on the link and read an article written by a human with a basic understanding of their own language (with an option to translate, if necessary).

*for certain definitions of “people”.

Legitimately surprised it was the "Crush" ad and not the AI-powered replacements for musicians as the thing that fed the discourse.

Me, I'm still shaking my head about the guy gleefully editing Numbers spreadsheets on BART.

I wouldn’t put it past most Gunzels to make spreadsheets like that.

U.S. Court Rules That Police Can Force a Suspect to Unlock Phone With Thumbprint
https://daringfireball.net/linked/2024/04/18/police-touch-id

Salvo,

@daringfireball
Even a 6-digit passcode that you use all the time and can enter in under a second is less secure than Face/Touch ID.

Your subconscious muscle memory can be observed by a 3rd party, especially if you do it all the time.

One other weakness is “Unlock With Apple Watch”; if you watch is authenticated and nearby, TouchID or FaceID can be bypassed by the 3rd party.

@daringfireball it makes sense. Google “make”
Pixels and Chromebooks; they aren’t a hardware company and it shows.

What doesn’t make sense is why Tile did not bend-over backwards to be compatible and why Google didn’t bend-over backwards to include them.

It definitely seems like they are cutting off their own noses to spite their own faces.

Lots of countries have media ownership laws that prevent serving politicians (and direct family) from owning any sort of Media Companies.

The Biden Administration needs to squeeze through legislation long these lines. If these manage this successfully, it will open up other conflict-of-interest legislation too.

Meta Used Its Onavo VPN to Snoop on Users’ Encrypted Snapchat Traffic
https://daringfireball.net/linked/2024/03/29/meta-onavo-snapchat

Salvo,

@daringfireball Apple should have expelled Onavo as soon as it’s functionality was exposed, not a year later.
The App Stores strength as a Walled Garden was undermined by this inaction.
Meanwhile, Snapchat should have had better E2E encryption so that a MiM attack wouldn’t be possible.
I’m not defending Facebook, but everyone knows that their business model is to spy on users. They cannot be given an inch of wiggle room.

As someone who genuinely loves many apple products and would like to see the company do better, this makes me very happy. As @mcc has previously noted, my expectations for the outcome of this process are low (the antitrust system in the US famously does not function very well) but the rhetoric alone here has the chance of changing some behavior. https://toot.cafe/@slightlyoff/112134855225973806

Mastodon may not be as big as some other social networks. And it may not have as many celebrities & "influencers."

But it sure is a nice place to engage with curious, thoughtful & interesting folks in ways that I haven't experienced elsewhere online.

Rather than a chaotic circus, #Mastodon uniquely feels like a (mostly) friendly neighborhood.

    Salvo,

@Sheril it depends how you define “celebrities”.
There are plenty of science and technology media personalities on Mastodon.
Honestly, not having Pop media personalities and influences spruiking their egos and trying to get free shit is a welcome change from other social media platforms.
