@daringfireball this reminds me of when the Holden Commodore VF was released, Holden/GM signed an exclusive deal with Pandora and discontinued CarPlay and Android Auto.
The problem is that the headunit is deeply integrated with Integral car systems like Climate Control so replacing with an aftermarket Headunit is not an option.
@daringfireball LLM search is not what people* want.
Accurate search without LLM-generated content is what people* want.
I want to type in a term, with + and - filters and get what I asked for (with maybe some synonyms or spelling variations down the bottom of the list).
I want to be able to click on the link and read an article written by a human with a basic understanding of their own language (with an option to translate, if necessary).
@daringfireball
Lots of countries have media ownership laws that prevent serving politicians (and direct family) from owning any sort of Media Companies.
The Biden Administration needs to squeeze through legislation long these lines. If these manage this successfully, it will open up other conflict-of-interest legislation too.
@daringfireball Apple should have expelled Onavo as soon as it’s functionality was exposed, not a year later.
The App Stores strength as a Walled Garden was undermined by this inaction.
Meanwhile, Snapchat should have had better E2E encryption so that a MiM attack wouldn’t be possible.
I’m not defending Facebook, but everyone knows that their business model is to spy on users. They cannot be given an inch of wiggle room.
@daringfireball is iMessage a product or a service?
I think iMessage is only a service provided to iOS users.
It isn’t an Apple Product that they wish to sell.
Is it a missed opportunity if you don’t want to follow that path?
As someone who genuinely loves many apple products and would like to see the company do better, this makes me very happy. As @mcc has previously noted, my expectations for the outcome of this process are low (the antitrust system in the US famously does not function very well) but the rhetoric alone here has the chance of changing some behavior. https://toot.cafe/@slightlyoff/112134855225973806
@daringfireball
Road Authoritities; “People shouldn’t use their phones while driving!”
Apple;
“What if we restrict what they do so they can only do safe things?”
Road Authorities;
“I suppose that is OK…”
Developers; “but we want drivers to watch Netflix while driving! Antitrust!”
Manufacturers; “but we want to sell customers tracking information! Antitrust!”
@daringfireball this is like claiming that Suzuki have the monopoly on Kei-sized small 4WDs because no one else has entered the market or that Toyota have the monopoly on normal-sized diesel 4WD wagons because their competitors are all making Station Wagons that aren’t off-road capable.
@Sheril it depends how you define “celebrities”.
There are plenty of science and technology media personalities on Mastodon.
Honestly, not having Pop media personalities and influences spruiking their egos and trying to get free shit is a welcome change from other social media platforms.
@daringfireball the argument should be made that more of the App Store profits should be diverted into Quality Control in the Approval process.
It shouldn’t be a profit centre.
Apple were very proud to tout iTunes and iBooks as Zero profit, and that the 30% was taken up with payment processing fees and the cost of maintaining the servers.
YouTube wouldn't build an app for the Apple Vision Pro, so I did! Introducing Juno, an Apple Vision Pro app for YouTube, now available at http://juno.vision 📺🥽
@christianselig if only there was a way to use it on other Apple Platforms that also don’t have a native App, like MacOS for Apple Silicon and MacOS for Intel…
(Wishful thinking)
Meanwhile, the post about my grandpa reached 130 replies. Stories from all over the world about fascists and anti-fascists in your families. It is by far the most moving experience I ever had on social media. I’m so so grateful. 💛 Not a single Nazi showed up in those replies. What an amazing sign for Mastodon.

My Opa’s sergeant gave him unofficial permission to go AWOL for the birth of his fist daughter (my mum).
That night, the blitz came and his entire unit was wiped out.
He never talked about the war, Oma joked about it.
Earlier this year, I discovered the identity of the Dutch 🇳🇱 resistance agent “Muuske” during the 2nd World War.
He was never proud of the dishonourable things he did during the war, even though he knew they were for the correct reasons.

I can’t have cocoa or stevia due to medical condition.
Therefore I can’t drink any CocaCola-Amatil drinks. The only drink they sell that isn’t sweetened by Stevia is real CocaCola.
@daringfireball most of the “Connectivity Issues” come from the crappy hardware of the manufacturers OEM ICE systems.
If they used reliable USB ports, reliable hardware computing platforms and reliable Bluetooth interfaces, there wouldn’t be any connectivity issues.
It is not the fault of CarPly or Android Auto, it is the fault of the OEM and Aftermarket car audio manufacturers cutting corners.

I have a distant hope that I will be able to interact with my family members, old friends and new social groups, who are only on Meta, without me actually having to go on meta.
I’m sure that we will all be Zucked over before we reach that point but I do have a small amount of faith in the ActivityPub platform that it will be fine.
