That ad is one of the dumbest attempts at damage control I think I’ve ever seen.

He spends more time on a soap box ranting about COVID-19 and masks then actually addressing what he’s actually in hot water about. It’s literally just “The student violated dress code standards and I’m totally not a racist, BUT LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT THE TYRANNICAL GOVERNMENT MAKING WEAR MASKS OVER THE COVID HOAX!!!”

Trump floats idea of three-term presidency at NRA convention (www.theguardian.com)

Donald Trump flirted with the idea of being president for three terms – a clear violation of the US constitution – during a bombastic speech for the National Rifle Association in which he vowed to reverse gun safety measures green-lighted during the Biden administration....

So let’s see here, Trump is 77 years old, but will be 78 at the time of election. Let’s just add eight years and we get 86… yep he’s angling for president for life.

Lol. You’ve obviously never looked into the banned pesticides of the past. I mean at least modern apples aren’t sprayed with Lead hydrogen arsenate.

It’s rare that a headline will actually make me laugh out loud, but this one did it.

Nah, Lincoln was thinner and less… bulbous. This guy looks more like Roger from American Dad roleplaying a used car salesman.

To be as generous as possible maybe they’re going for a The Sims 4 approach; the base game is free, expansions cost money. I suspect though they’re going to go for a pay-to-play style game, there’ll be a ultra bare-bones base game and all meaningful content will be locked behind macro-transactions.

I’d really love it if they did like some countries and added the sales tax(es) to the sticker price in stores too

I’m planning on growing some normal petunias first. Then once the price has come down a bit (and I have some experience keeping petunias alive and overwintering them indoors) I’ll grab a Firefly plant.

I did however buy some of those new purple tomatoes. Hopefully they’ll do well enough I’ll be able to make some crosses I want to try (Early Girl and San Marzano).

“AI” is to the 2020’s what “Cyber” was to the early 2000’s; something marketing will slap onto any product in an attempt to make it seem more high tech

Sludgehammer,

I bought some of those GMO Purple tomatoes and I am super psyched to try them out. Right now I have three plants in pots indoors, one cutting in water (extra seedling from one of the pots) and some in my seed starting tray (which I over watered so they’re not doing so hot). I’m planning to start hardening them off next month.

I think that last thing is a sink. In fact, it appears to be the only sink in the kitchen, picture trying to use that thing to wash some crud off a pan or something.

“For us as humans to think that we can make a product better than God can is interesting.”

And yet I bet this doorknob still eats bread, a product much better than the raw grain God provided us.

Two things really.

  1. Tradition. Alcohol has a long history in European culture and by immigration the United States. It’s common to have a glass of wine or a beer with dinner, the rich will impress their friends with the extravagant alcohol they drink serve, you take a glass of wine at communion… heck at one point weak beers were drunk more than water, because at the time nobody knew what made water safe to drink but everyone could tell if beer smelled rotten.
  2. Production. Marijuana is easy to grow, but it takes a lot of time and space to produce. Alcohol on the other hand you need something with sugar and some yeast or starter. It can be fermented in some corner of the basement or even a cupboard. It’s so hard to control the production of alcohol even in prisons there’s usually somebody fermenting pruno somewhere and that’s one of the most controlled and monitored environments. It’s really hard to prevent people from brewing some form of alcohol because it’s about as easy as making bread.

When you combine these two you end up with the disaster that occurred when the United States tried to ban alcohol during prohibition. An easy to produce intoxicant with a large market was suddenly banned, when people started looking for more organized crime stepped in to fill the void.

I kinda feel sorry for this guy. Based on the grammar in the image I’m pretty sure he’s a non-english speaker.

So I’m guessing he’s some immigrant trying to make his way in a foreign country. But when he looked online for tax information he got sucked into the Sovcit griftosphere, and now he’s trying file his taxes with with what amounts to flat earth arguments.

Well… I mean, people donated to the charity for anti-crime reasons and that led to a police officer being charged for embezzling from that charity. Therefore, the charity is working as intended and as such police officer is not actually guilty of a crime. Quad ergot defenestration.

GPT-4o’s Chinese token-training data is polluted by spam and porn websites (www.technologyreview.com)

Of the 100 results, only three of them are common enough to be used in everyday conversations; everything else consisted of words and expressions used specifically in the contexts of either gambling or pornography. The longest token, lasting 10.5 Chinese characters, literally means “_free Japanese porn video to watch.” Oops....

Sludgehammer,
@Sludgehammer@lemmy.world avatar

Because these tokens are not actual commonly spoken words or phrases, the chatbot can fail to grasp their meanings. Researchers have been able to leverage that and trick GPT-4o into hallucinating answers or even circumventing the safety guardrails OpenAI had put in place.

Google’s Gemini doesn’t seem to like some of these tokens either, I threw “Please translate the following text: _日本毛片免费视频观看” into it and it returned “我没法提供这方面的帮助,因为我只是一个语言模型。” which according to Google translate is “I can’t help with that because I’m just a language model.” It will however translate the error message just fine.

“Country threatens to kill civilians unless terrorists do as they say” Yeah, I’d say that’s not gonna work, but the whole point of this ultimatum is to justify the slaughter of Palestinians.

In the long run it’ll probably work out for Hamas too. Watching friends and family get murdered will probably radicalize a lot of folks and drive up recruitment.

IMO improving graphics technology is a case of diminishing returns. Sure you can always make a better looking game by throwing more processing power at it, but that has (at best) a minor effect on things like gameplay and story. Like seriously, if Squenix had decided to make FF7: Rebirth in the PS3 era, other then some uglier graphics how much would the game have have been different?

And (to actually tie this in to the thread) that’s the reason PS5 sales have been so sluggish. What do you really need those PS5 graphics for? I mean my PC is still running hardware from 5-10 years ago, because there isn’t anything I really need to upgrade for. Most of what I’ve been playing is indy titles and for the few graphic intensive games I want to play they’ll usually run if I lower some graphics settings.

Pretty much all of the comments I’ve seen on Lemmy about a TikTok ban have been about how it’s political theater and would ultimately be pointless in preventing data harvesting.
