@jimsalter I assume you already know this, but the PracticalZFS site is not working. I'm getting "Peer’s Certificate issuer is not recognized." on my end.

I don't think the issue is on my end, but happy to be educated 😀 It started happening for me yesterday and, since you have a day job, I figure you'll get it fixed when you can...

But, just in case you didn't know...

What a wild day.

Posting here about KVM live migrations and working to explain to a(n excellent) junior admin how routers work, gateways, hops, and what ttl means in his ping and traces.

Then, just as I’m winding down, another junior admin mentioned he agreed to do a SQL DB Migration tonight for one of our clients. I’m sure that won’t end up on my plate in a few hours… 🫠

@felimwhiteley You've worn me down. I last used KDE in the V3 Days (On Mandrake, if you can believe it...)

But, I installed KDE on my Debian laptop yesterday, via the testing branch.

(I'd love to use the RC of Plasma 6 but I don't see a tidy way to do that on this install...)

Still has strong 'We're like Windows' vibes to me, but it's working well and I'll keep running it for at least the remainder of the month.

MATE has been usurped, at least for now!

Received an Aqara ‘TVOC Air Quality Monitor’ as a Christmas gift. I do not have an Aqara hub, but I do have .

I opened the box and pulled out the battery tabs to get the device going. I set my Zigbee2MQTT Addon to allow new devices and then pressed the button on top of the unit for 10 seconds.

It was detected. Easy.

I added it to my dashboard and was delighted to see a little toggle option to change the display units of the device. Perfect. Very happy! I may need a few more…

Books Read: 2022

Having forgotten to make this post at the end of 2022, this post is a little tardy. But, I organize my reading into year based 'Collections' on my Kindle, so knowing what was read isn't too hard to figure out. Figuring our the order in which I read them proving a stiffer challenge!

I started the year with a couple of books on time, and historical time keeping. Firstly, I read 'Longitude: The True Story of

To any or shooters: What does your workflow look like?

I stopped shooting film 8 years ago, mostly due to workflow problems. Finding the time to do high-res scans and deal with the physical film just took away all the joy. I spent more time on admin than shooting!

Are you digitally archiving your film? Do you select the low-res scans from the film developer? Develop your own film? Do you keep the film once digitized? Do you archive it?

All input welcome!

I’ve agreed to do a headshot photoshoot for all the leaders and staff people at my local church this Sunday.

It’s not the kind of photos I usually make, but it’s not too far beyond what I’ve done before. It’s always fun and energizing for me to push a bit beyond my ‘usual’ photography.

Spent this evening checking over my soft box, and re-learning wireless flash.

My wife has kindly agreed to be my model tomorrow so I can get some direct practice!

It’s #Amtrak day for me. We're zipping up the Northeast Corridor on the #Acela today, as the last leg of our 8 day trip around the US visiting family.

Of the three possible First class menus we lucked into geting the options we most wanted. Creme Brulee french toast was great this AM, and I'm looking forward to Lasagna later.

Great high speed link north from Washington, DC, avoiding any rough air from tropical storm #Ophelia, and then we’ll ease into town this evening on the #Downeaster.

It always feels good to freshen the air in our apartment after a day of A/C use with the windows all closed up.

Windows were closed around noon, we left for a bit around 5PM, and then just after 7 two guests joined us and I did some cooking on our gas stove. They left a little before 10PM.

The windows opened up a little after 7AM.

While the air is now more sticky in here, it’s nice to get an infusion of fresh air!

@MonaApp Hello to my favorite Mastodon app!

Recently, the Mona App on my macOS machine does not stay ‘pinned’ to the top of my timeline. As it brings in posts the app is no longer always forcing my client to show them. This seems to go along with a minor visual misalignment where new posts come in, at first, ‘just above’ the top of the client and then just pile in from there.

I am running the new macOS beta, so this may well be that, but I wanted to pass it along all the same.

I don’t know why it took me this long to try it out, but WOW: I am so impressed with .

Much easier to setup than expected, and it’s a lot smarter and faster handling the sync than I was expecting too.

Now to figure out if I also want to host my own Discovery server…

It is done: I’ve moved my primary server, the bare metal, from Fedora to Debian 12.

The process was 99% smooth, with only a couple hiccups between where Fedora keeps a few qemu resources, versus where Debian does.

It was deeply satisfying to have completed nearly all of the work via a single Ansible playbook. Once I ran that, which took care of installing Cockpit, ZFS, sanoid, etc., I had only to pop a couple of config files back in place to be up and running.

@JoeRess - Will there be a time where my Patreon for @25admins is included within the world of your other Podcasts? Will they always be two separate worlds?

Topslakr, to Ansible
@Topslakr@fosstodon.org avatar

I started the process this week of reworking my playbooks to work on Debian 12.

I’ve been really happy in the Red Hat and ecosystem for a long time but it feels to me like, as a home-labber, I’m not welcome in that world any more.

So far, it’s been really smooth. A lot of the little workarounds I’ve need to do on my systems aren’t required and it’s taking me just a few minutes in each playbook to make some obvious changes, like swapping dnf for apt.

Full rebuild soon!

Done right, immutable is great and can be a real boon to everyone. Now, let’s talk about what ‘done right’ is, and who’ll make that happen.

macOS has been using a similar system for years on the desktop to great effect.

I think you’re spot on, and made a great point on the podcast. https://ubuntu.social/@popey/110549983328908206

For some reason, I am jumping out of my seat EXCITED for some old audio gear I have (hopefully) showing up today.

Just an old original Mackie HUI, but I've not been sleeping well for a week in expectation.

FedEx has already lost it once, I have no idea how well it was packed, and I'm not even sure how well it will (still) work in Pro Tools.

Still super pumped...
