Would I be a horrible person if I shut down Autistic Bookshop? It’s costing me $1,200 to run this month and that’s money that could go towards taxes and my own bills + my rent is going up $300. It’s just such a gigantic money drain on a store that I am 100% certain will never be profitable. It will always be a money drain on The Autistic Innovator. My employee is so good at her job, but the store will never cover her wages. It’s bad business to spend $1,200 in a month at a loss.

@UnCoveredMyths@autistics.life avatar

@ashleyspencer

I agree, it shouldn't be costing you money. Maybe a few dollars of hosting fees.

And if it is causing you anguish, let it go.

Maybe someone else would want to create one someday.

I think I saw that you did decide to close it. I'll need to remove the links I posted to it on my website if so. Not that anyone knows my website exists...

UnCoveredMyths,
@UnCoveredMyths@autistics.life avatar

@ashleyspencer

That would be fine.

My dog, Mel, is a golden retriever. He is missing his cat, and staying depressed. Rocky died two months ago.

We cannot afford another pet. And I can’t take care of another.

He has plenty of stuffed animals.

He gets two good walks a day, and usually petted by a dozen people.

Does anyone have any ideas how to cheer him up?

Does anyone ever consider learning sign language not because they can't speak, but just because sometimes they don't want to? Or don't feel up to it?

Yes. Sadly, due to my vision issues, the fast motion makes me dizzy.

Now that I put on my store contact us form to not ask me for donated stim toys, and don’t ask me for money. Now I’m getting asked to pay a foundation $350 to set up a table at their neurodiversity event and sell my stim toys. That’s ridiculous. They’re still asking for money. This is pathetic.

These organizations need to stop trying to take advantage of me. I’m just a little store. It’s maddening.

UnCoveredMyths,
@UnCoveredMyths@autistics.life avatar

@ashleyspencer

Ugh.

Reminds me of author conventions.

When they were $75, I'd go for the weekend. And maybe sell $5 worth of books, so out $70.

Now, the same convention is over $200.

Even as a business expense, it isn't worth it!

Especially when you add in the cost of ordering items to sell. And storing the ones that don't sell.

All of Kathleen’s social media outreach for Autistic Bookshop is reaching more authors. We’re getting more author submissions. :)

UnCoveredMyths,

@ashleyspencer Are their links to the social media pages on the Autistic Bookshop site?

@ashleyspencer

I was wondering, does your bookshop social media person have a Pinterest account for the store?

I was wanting to add some pins for the Autistic BooksShop on there.

I may just create some with my books and their links.

UnCoveredMyths,

Student loans are so predatory. The old loan company with my gov loans didn’t accrue interest on the subsidized loans and they let me direct my payments towards specific loans. I paid off 2 of the loans by individually paying them off one by one.

This new loan company Gov transferred to is charging me interest and applying payments only to the interest. I have to call them to request they ungroup the loans so I can actually pay them off. Will never pay it off making one overall payment.

UnCoveredMyths,
@UnCoveredMyths@autistics.life avatar

@ashleyspencer @jankhambrams

I had that problem too. Only $5,000 of loans had been sold six times, and somehow morphed into $20,000. I kept spreadsheets to show how much I paid. One year I paid over $5,000 and only $0.02 had been applied to the $5,000 loan that had ballooned into $20,000.

Luckily, total disability allowed me to get the loans forgiven.

If I hadn't already paid more than the full amount of the loan, I would have felt guilty for not paying. Still did sometimes.

UnCoveredMyths,
@UnCoveredMyths@autistics.life avatar

@ashleyspencer @jankhambrams

They started as government loans.

I knew better than to take out loans.

However, adults who should have known better, college counselors, said I needed the loans to get a good paying job.

Did they know college graduate jobs with a masters degree only paid a nickle above minimum wage? What I would consider high school drop out pay required a masters degree.

I am writing a bit today.

And keeping a list of things to do on brain not working days.

One of those is a photo project. I want to take pictures of items given to me as gifts that have special meaning, and attach a note that reminds me who gave it to me.

Last Tuesday, I was showing my physical therapist the gifts various friends have given me, and most of those friends are no longer here. I want to remember, even as my memory slips away.

Only problem: Mac tends to lose photo notes. Ideas?

Today’s Facebook post is a frog plush playing FarmVille on my iPad lol.

I’m too worn out to go anywhere, so trying to think of some photos I can take at home. Running out of plushies. I have 20 on the way though!

I look forward to having an employee help me with these photos. More content and creativity.

UnCoveredMyths,

Some plushie photo ideas: frog in a bird bath, or foot bath. One grooming another with a hairbrush. One of the panda’s looking out a window at a tree or scenery.

Posted my job to the I Love Plushies page on Facebook and boosted it as an employment post.

Part of the job is taking plushies on adventures for cute photos, so good to reach people who would like doing that. It's time consuming, as much as I love doing it.

$15/hr isn't much at first, but as the business makes more money they'll get a raise.

UnCoveredMyths,
@UnCoveredMyths@autistics.life avatar

@ashleyspencer

It may not be much.

Too me it would be. I never made more than $5 an hour, since do to taxes you only get 2/3 of a paycheck.

Never had any luck finding a job that paid at least minimum wage.

Honestly, I wish all jobs paid a living wage!

Well today’s job interview didn’t happen. The interviewer stood me up and never called. Now it’s past the time the phone interview was supposed to end.

Yesterday’s interview who didn’t read my no evening’s availability, and the one who stood me up today are the only ones who responded to my application out of all the ones I’ve applied to.

I suspect I’m not getting responses because I’m an entrepreneur with an active business, and haven’t had a regular job since January 2022.

I was thinking about what we call "public places."

Some are. Libraries generally are.

Public places shouldn't have a financial cost to enter. At all.

Any financial cost makes them private.

Especially these days, when people are lucky to have $10 a year of spending money.

Far too many parks and nature reserves have gone from public to private by charging those who most cannot afford to pay a fee. Often more than a year's spending money.

It can be difficult to find public places to visit.

Do you think libraries will NOT survive and eventually become obsolete? Please respond why below and share. If there's enough respondents, it will be used for an article.

@suswatibasu

Difficult to say.

Too many local libraries have removed almost al of the physical books. They have wide open, noisy spaces where lots of kids gather to do whatever.

They have some ebooks online, never the ones I am looking for.

I remember when one cut the science fiction catalogue from several hundred titles to less than 10!

I miss print books. I can't see to read them anymore.

And I don't deal well with noisy, echoey spaces, so stay home.

The Autistic BookShop is a great place to find books by authors.

All kinds of books, and more will be arriving soon!

Some of mine were written as I was beginning to understand that I am autistic.

Check out your fellow !

    Upright Cane scammed me out of $450. I filed another dispute after Affirm said the product I received wasn’t damaged. This time disputing it as fraud for not receiving the item I ordered.

    BBB gave them an F rating and says they are a scam. Filed a BBB complaint and filed a complaint with the FTC so they will get shut down. If Affirm continues to allow this company to scam disabled people, I’ll file a BBB complaint against Affirm.

    I got things moving forward with Autistic Bookshop finally.

    Set up things for new authors to upload their books, created and sent a contract, follow up emails, etc.

    Had to submit a support ticket for the print book app in my store because its still not working. Can't add any print books until its fixed.

    Plenty of other stuff to do for Autistic Bookshop, but need to pace it out so I don't get overwhelmed.

    I took the new wheelchair for a practice run up and down a hill and incline on wheelchair ramps. I did better than I thought I would.

    Backing up is a challenge. Getting through my front door when coming back is the hardest part.

    It’s also a lot quieter than I thought it would be and kind of a soothing sound. I started spacing out a bit and getting sleepy because it was relaxing me so much.

    @ashleyspencer it took me about a month to build up arm muscles to where getting in and out wasn’t too difficult! At least with a chair instead of a scooter you can keep it in your apartment.
