Looked at a small basic tool set in a case sold by Ikea. And I just realized: it doesn't include a hex key (Allen key) set in it.

Just seems strange.

Every love has a force of its own. Love cannot be inactive in a lover; it cannot but lead in some direction. If you want to see the character of a person's love, see where it is leading.

Within barely a month, we've had a solar eclipse (through the Americas, anyway), and now the aurora light show.

Centuries ago, they surely would've thought that we were entering the End Times.

Shouldn't someone at least compose a symphony to commemorate all of this?

YouTube has just given up and is now just throwing commercials to me in any language. English, French, Chinese, and this week Korean! I have my language preferenced right there, in the YouTube settings, but 🤷🏼‍♀️

WhippoorwillSong,
@WhippoorwillSong@mstdn.social avatar

@mariellequinton I have language settings too, and I still get odd Russian stuff pop up. Never Spanish, never Italian, never Norwegian... funny algorithms there.

A couple of days ago, I got sick of the pop culture rankings videos coming up on my suggested videos homepage. So I started right click-deleting them. For every one that I deleted, more would come up, like whack-a-mole.

Youtube is useless.

Where do you live and how do you feel about it?

Obviously, don't tell me exactly where you live, no actual addresses please! You can be as vague as you like.

I live in Central Missouri in the U.S.

Pros:

This is an absolutely beautiful place, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, ponds, and natural springs, cool caves to explore.

Lots of farming here, so great access to quality fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy.

It's relatively inexpensive to live here compared with other states, because it's a "flyover".

I'm close enough to three major cities, that it's an easy day trip, and I'm about halfway to anywhere in the U.S.

We have one of the best Conservation departments in the U.S. and this is one of the few things that is a bipartisan issue. Lots of awesome nature programs that are free or cheap, state parks, conservation areas, bird watching, hunting, boating, foraging available to everyone.

Cons:

Yeah, it's a big one, it is a RED STATE, while a lot of the cities are blue, there is a large rural population, that votes red. Abortion is not legal here. People often vote against their own self interest.

While I'm not against responsible gun ownership, lots of people aren't responsible, and people have access to guns that definitely should not.

We have very few employee protections here, while the cost of living is relatively low compared with other places, it's taken years to get to a $12 minimum wage, and it's still not enough.

WhippoorwillSong,
@WhippoorwillSong@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr Eastern Ontario, Ottawa. I've been here 25 years or so... I like the fact that it's clean and safe, close to nature, typical national capital amenities, etc. You can live off the fat of the land here, to a point.

That point has gotten to be more of a wedge over the years. There's more of a visible underclass here than there was when I moved here. There used to be pockets of poverty. Now it's maybe 75% of who uses transit, my guess.

The city pop grew 50% during my time here. 1/2

WhippoorwillSong,
@WhippoorwillSong@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr I worry more about polarization. The city core has always been somewhat of a hippie hollow vs the burbs. The Ottawa Valley and other outlying areas were very old school rural, insular, when I first got here.

Now the new burbs are still right-leaning, but with a lot of newcomers adding to that mix. Since I don't live in the burbs, I am not sure how all of that gels.

The core's gone gentrified. I suppose the burbs will become diverse with more renters, eventually. Fun future! 2/2

    @WhippoorwillSong@mstdn.social avatar

    @Centretowner I'm a dimwit when it comes to business, admittedly. But if competition in Canada's grocery biz was fiercer than it is, would there be so many food deserts and lack of quality selection in poorer areas?

    Are the fat cats in the industry content to skim off the cream from the consumer market, catering to the bougies, while everyone else gets a long-ass bus ride for a discount store can of beans?

    I have to wonder.

    Now somebody explain to me why I'm naive.

    WhippoorwillSong, to random
    @WhippoorwillSong@mstdn.social avatar

    It's also not lost on me that I have the privilege of time to spare for some extra running around, as I look for shopping alternatives. Loblaws doesn't just mean groceries, after all: I still need to source sundries like soap, shampoo, household cleaners, garbage bags, all the stuff that's so convenient to pick up while getting the groceries at the supermarket.

    Is it all futile? No, I don't think so. There are smaller grocers that might leverage this thing and grow. More competition? Who knows.

    WhippoorwillSong, to random
    @WhippoorwillSong@mstdn.social avatar

    The difficulty of getting groceries without a Loblaws brand, and without a car, has given me a whole new appreciation for the effort made by newcomers who trek on the bus to get a load from scarce international specialty grocers. It takes planning and commitment.

    I also contend with health issues. I already had a wonky spine, now it has cancer in it, and I can't lug heavy stuff on the bus. I'd been using delivery via superstore.

    I'll revert to that long term. But out of solidarity... 1/2

    WhippoorwillSong,
    @WhippoorwillSong@mstdn.social avatar

    ... with the people, I am making an effort to seek out alternatives this month.

    Competition is healthy, after all.

    Frozen produce helps stretch out the grocery runs. Nu Grocery delivers dry bulk goods like rice, lentils etc. (a little pricier, but great in a pinch). I can get some stuff from a Metro, if it's lightweight. I'm around the corner from a dollar store. Relatively lucky for options.

    It's a challenge though.

    I refuse to spend at Mall-wart, but there are none in the core anyway. 2/2

    Got to the hospital for my scan, on a rainy early Sunday morning. Went to the cancer wing entrance and... it wasn't open. Locked doors.

    So I had to take a long walk to get to the main entrance (with a short detour going the wrong way, while being a bit lost).

    Ran past a gauntlet of Canada geese waddling around the grounds with their goslings. Didn't want to face an attack... that would be quite a way to get taken down, by geese.
