If it’s not preventing him from running or landing him in jail, I don’t want to hear about Trump’s convictions. Like I don’t give a flying fuq! What an annoying day seeing people celebrate like it’s the Super Bowl. It’s only going to further embolden his supporters. He won’t lose a single vote over it and might even gain a bunch. Meanwhile Biden continues to lose supporters over Gaza. This is all so stupid. (1/2)

aburtch,
@aburtch@triangletoot.party avatar

@Stoneycase I totally understand your sentiment, but felony convictions matter. It is a big deal and will hurt him down the road. I know it's slow, but remember he still has THREE far more serious criminal cases ahead of him. That not only will he likely lose, but those carry actual jail time.

Sure it may get postponed until after the election (or even after his term if he wins) but they'll definitely happen. The wheel of justice is slow.

cc: @mrcompletely

aburtch,
@aburtch@triangletoot.party avatar

@Stoneycase @mrcompletely It definitely will. One reason that we won't get any jail time is because this is his first criminal conviction, he has no previous record. When the other trials move forward (and one of them is for January 6th, inciting a riot to overthrow the government) if convicted they can point to these felonies as reasons for harsh sentencing. ie. jail time.

. @pluralistic is essential reading these days. No one else explains why we are where we are today and how we got here better than he does.

For example, check out this recent essay: https://locusmag.com/2024/05/cory-doctorow-no-one-is-the-enshittifier-of-their-own-story/
or listen to it here: https://pca.st/episode/3079b9c2-3178-48a8-b699-08eb5a802ba4

Q: Why is everything so bad these days? People get worse service at higher prices while those supposedly giving them to us also make less as the digital platforms suck up all the profit.

If the suffering of Black people is invisible to you, then you miss so much of what's going on in the world. But if you can see Black people as entire human beings, then a few things immediately become apparent:

  1. Most hate comes from fans, not other players. Other players have only said, "Caitlin will be great. But even great rookies struggle adjusting to the competition level of the WNBA." Fans send death threats + racist slurs.

  2. Angel Reese gets much more hate than Caitlin Clark.

Kids these days don't know it, how would they and why, but there was this really weird 20-year period that us GenXers had to go through where a whole lot of old people were absolutely adamant about the fact that Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was the greatest album ever made. Year after year of Best Album Ever lists, and this novelty record - that's doesn't even belong in the top ten records by the Beatles - was there at top every time!

Where do you live and how do you feel about it?

Obviously, don't tell me exactly where you live, no actual addresses please! You can be as vague as you like.

I live in Central Missouri in the U.S.

Pros:

This is an absolutely beautiful place, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, ponds, and natural springs, cool caves to explore.

Lots of farming here, so great access to quality fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy.

It's relatively inexpensive to live here compared with other states, because it's a "flyover".

I'm close enough to three major cities, that it's an easy day trip, and I'm about halfway to anywhere in the U.S.

We have one of the best Conservation departments in the U.S. and this is one of the few things that is a bipartisan issue. Lots of awesome nature programs that are free or cheap, state parks, conservation areas, bird watching, hunting, boating, foraging available to everyone.

Cons:

Yeah, it's a big one, it is a RED STATE, while a lot of the cities are blue, there is a large rural population, that votes red. Abortion is not legal here. People often vote against their own self interest.

While I'm not against responsible gun ownership, lots of people aren't responsible, and people have access to guns that definitely should not.

We have very few employee protections here, while the cost of living is relatively low compared with other places, it's taken years to get to a $12 minimum wage, and it's still not enough.

aburtch,
@aburtch@triangletoot.party avatar

@RickiTarr I live in Durham, NC and I love it. It's diverse, has a vibrant food scene, and a strong economy with many tech, health, and bioscience companies. There are three major universities here in the triangle (as the area is called) and all the major music touring acts stop and play. Plus North Carolina has access to the mountains and the beach with a bunch of diverse biomes in between.

Initially I moved here on a whim, but 23 years later I'm still here and all in.

While we're in this vein, we need to stop and appreciate the songwriting and guitar playing of Nanci Griffith. This one is in a CRAZY non-standard open tuning. Just try and figure out how to finger-pick this one, I dare you.

It may not seem like it now, but during their time, the were a groundbreaking act. Their willingness to cover rock songs and contemporary material was antithetical to the bluegrass gatekeepers of the time.

They also kept their day jobs. "Seldom Scene" was coined because at first they only played once a week and didn’t stray too far from their Washington D.C. home base.

Their influence on later bands and newgrass in general is undeniable.

aburtch,
@aburtch@triangletoot.party avatar

Being a progressive bluegrass act they could rub some people the wrong way. I had to reprimand John Duffey once for being too vulgar on stage. (It was the Bishop’s Bluegrass Festival for goodness sake!)

They had a well-developed sense of fun, instrumental and vocal prowess, and high-quality output during an important time in bluegrass. "Live at the Cellar Door" was a landmark live album as well. All of this makes them an all-time great band.

Check them out: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0NmyJ9h4R3BnXv5jjbQKv5?si=51da152466ec4471

aburtch,
@aburtch@triangletoot.party avatar

@mrcompletely Exactly! Duffey had no ability to “read the room” and even after I said something, he didn’t change his approach. It got them uninvited the following year.

But damn John Starling could sing.
