Interesting, the alcohol content in the hard cider served at La Crêperie de Paris at Epcot is only 3%. Going to brew up a batch of some kind of hard cider here today, probably, and all the recipes seem to be double that.

PBS: After a year of record-breaking global heat with El Nino, will La Nina bring a reprieve? That depends on where you live and how you feel about hurricanes. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/science/la-nina-is-on-its-way-back-an-atmospheric-scientist-explains-what-to-expect

ai6yr,

At the bottom: Is climate change affecting La Nina’s impact?

El Nino and La Nina are now happening on top of the effects of global warming. That can exacerbate temperatures, as the world saw in 2023, and precipitation can go off the charts.

Since summer 2023, the world has had 10 straight months of record-breaking global temperatures. A lot of that warmth is coming from the oceans, which are still at record-high temperatures.

La Nina should cool things a bit, but greenhouse gas emissions that drive global warming are still rising in the background. So while fluctuations between El Nino and La Nina can cause short-term temperature swings, the overall trend is toward a warming world.

ai6yr,
  • Not in the article:
  • SSTs are through the roof.
  • Much of the heatwaves and extreme weather people are attributing to "El Nino" occurred before it was El Nino.

😂 Saw this on Craigslist (on the other hand, you could use it to charge whatever electronics you have that is sitting on your new "glass table top")

ai6yr,

hmm. I'm seeing whitish gray smoke over near the ball fields in Debs Park.

concerning, but I can't see flames directly, and I don't know if there are BBQ pits over there, so don't want to call the fire department unnecessarily.

ai6yr,

@exador23 You can always call and they'll check it out. They prefer calls to no calls.

ai6yr,

@exador23 LOL so we're talking "TOO MUCH BBQ STARTER FLUID" then.

GREAT opportunity for those in the Conejo Valley/Thousand Oaks/Newbury Park. There is an opportunity for $250 in FREE PLANTS (plus help) to convert your yard into a native garden from the local Audubon society. #gardening #ThousandOaks #ConejoValley #garden #free #grant #plants https://wp.conejovalleyaudubon.org/conservation/lawns-to-habitat/

Some great before/after photos from this program (not my yard). (I also took advantage of this, it was AWESOME). Before/After!

ai6yr,

Lessons from me from this program, btw:

  1. Did NOT need that many plants! Remember that small plants become big plants...

  2. More variety better than a lot of the same. I could have used 1/5 or less of the plants and propagated them. Propagation of natives is very easy (in the rainy season, or keep them well watered the first year).

  3. Watch the selection.. a lot of the"native" plants are not very local but instead from Baja California, which is fine... but use in moderation, as those really are more exotics than natives.

ai6yr,

NOTE: You can DOUBLE UP the $2 per square foot turf removal rebates from the local city with this program... and really, it's free. https://socalwatersmart.com/en/residential/rebates/available-rebates/turf-replacement-program/

ai6yr,

@exador23 Bummer.

ai6yr,

@jberry Yep...

ai6yr,

@exador23 Bleah

ai6yr,

@mjausson LOL I haven't used my irrigation system since before the pandemic... I have plans to cap off the automatic valves, so they don't leak.

Huge number of Monarch butterfly caterpillars in my backyard at the moment. #monarchbutterfly #insects #caterpillar

ai6yr,

@BakerRL75 The milkweed took over the lawn in the back yard (native, by itself -- volunteer!), so I pulled all the grass!

ai6yr,

@Myoldpiano Thanks!

ai6yr, to raccoons
ai6yr,

@Catawu Yes, yes, they can open latches.

ai6yr,

@mjausson @Catawu I'm pretty sure there was a raccoon using the drinking fountain attachment in the backyard... I now have the thing shut off to prevent raccoon spit being wiped all over it, LOL.
