ai6yr,

GREAT opportunity for those in the Conejo Valley/Thousand Oaks/Newbury Park. There is an opportunity for $250 in FREE PLANTS (plus help) to convert your yard into a native garden from the local Audubon society. https://wp.conejovalleyaudubon.org/conservation/lawns-to-habitat/

ai6yr, (edited )

Some great before/after photos from this program (not my yard). (I also took advantage of this, it was AWESOME). Before/After! #nativeplants #gardening #gardens #ConejoValley

@ai6yr DUDE THAT's BEAUTIFUL we also tried to put too many plants lmao

ai6yr,

Lessons from me from this program, btw:

  1. Did NOT need that many plants! Remember that small plants become big plants...

  2. More variety better than a lot of the same. I could have used 1/5 or less of the plants and propagated them. Propagation of natives is very easy (in the rainy season, or keep them well watered the first year).

  3. Watch the selection.. a lot of the"native" plants are not very local but instead from Baja California, which is fine... but use in moderation, as those really are more exotics than natives.

ai6yr,

NOTE: You can DOUBLE UP the $2 per square foot turf removal rebates from the local city with this program... and really, it's free. https://socalwatersmart.com/en/residential/rebates/available-rebates/turf-replacement-program/

@ai6yr It’s nice this program exists however it would be even better if they included artificial turf removal as an incentive as well. That plastic lawn is nasty stuff!

ai6yr,

@jberry Yep...

@ai6yr That horrible company that stole all the rebate money when the turf replacement program first came out in Los Angeles by throwing down weed fabric and gravel in everyone's front yards in the valley really screwed the pooch for everyone else.

Now every aspect of the program is micromanaged by the city, down to how many plants you must have (i.e too many to allow for growth)

ai6yr,

@exador23 Bummer.

@exador23@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@ai6yr They did add one cool thing though. To get the rebate you now need to include either rain barrels or a rain garden feature to infiltrate roof water.

@ai6yr But you need a law degree& a lot of patience to read & comply with all the rules and go through the multiple steps and forms and approval process and documentation and inspections.

@ai6yr They probably expect you to kill 1/3 or more of the plants. That may well be realistic for people who don't install automatic irrigation.

I know people who spend an hour every evening hose watering their garden. Then they go on holiday and come back to dead plants. Big surprise! 🤦🏼‍♀️

When I tell them that they should install irrigation, they act like I'm inviting them to my Satanist church. 😂 Year, after year...

ai6yr,

@mjausson LOL I haven't used my irrigation system since before the pandemic... I have plans to cap off the automatic valves, so they don't leak.

mjausson,
@mjausson@mastodon.design avatar

@ai6yr With an established native garden you don't need it. But realistically it's going to take most people at least 3-5 years to get to that stage. If they lose lots of plants every time they take a vacation, it takes even longer. Automatic systems save time, money and heartache.

@mjausson @ai6yr I enforce my plants to be hardy to survive. If they can't survive a bit of neglect then they will be replaced.

ATLeagle,
@ATLeagle@mastodon.online avatar

@mjausson @ai6yr I am still overwhelmed and unable to keep things tidy

ai6yr,

@ATLeagle @mjausson There's definitely something to be said for hardiness. I am a fan of the edible weeds here for that reason. Zero need to worry about them and they keep on producing even if you pull half of them out, LOL.

@ai6yr

Lots of localities have similar programs, so if this is something someone elsewhere wants to do, try looking around!
