ai6yr, to cycling

Woohoo! It's "try out the new bicycle lane day" for me sometime. (unfortunately, will have to drive my bicycle over there to try this out, due to distance and lack of time/safe routes there....a wee bit beyond my range at the moment)

ai6yr,

@jlamoree Thanks!! Yeah, that's a bit of a trek for me on a work day, LOL.

Mystery tree of the day. Maybe a shrub. Extremely popular with the pollinators. Blooms year round. Covered always with honeybees, carpenter bees, native bees, hummingbird, you name it. Neighbor (one that will talk to me, LOL) hates it and always tells me she wishes I would get rid of it. (Update: Almost certainly Grewia occidentalis, the Crossberry -- very useful plant, and edible!!!)

ai6yr,

@camless AHA!!!! I've been trying to figure that out for a decade. Sure looks like it!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grewia_occidentalis

ai6yr,

@camless Wow, I love it!

"they are collected and dried for later use. The dried fruits are sometimes boiled in milk - a bush milkshake! Beer is also brewed from the ripe fruit in certain areas. Other human uses of this species include using the wood to make bows and spear shafts.

The cross-berry is an important species in traditional medicine and is used for a variety of purposes. Bruised bark soaked in hot water is used to treat wounds. Pounded bark, used regularly as a shampoo, was believed to prevent hair from turning grey. Parts of the plant were used to treat impotence and sterility, and root extracts were used to help in childbirth."

ai6yr,

Ha! Looks like I have a new fruit tree... and can make it into beer... turn it into spears... treat wounds... and shampoo!

ai6yr,

@ColesStreetPothole Yes!! I have been trying to figure this out for a decade. It's edible too!

ai6yr,

(okay, if you're into that kind of thing, go to the costume rental store and fake this... official police vehicle and uniform... badge visible... being paid by taxpayers?)

ai6yr,

@wotsac Unfortunately.

Cautionary tale in "COVID is not over" (see thread) from one of the regulars here. If nothing else, for the huge impact on your life if you end up with a bad case of it.

Seeking eggplant recipe ideas, as I have one limp eggplant in the fridge and 8 eggplants growing in hydroponics (which may produce a massive amount of eggplant).

So far my repertoire includes 2 dishes:

  1. Eggplant Parmesan (Italian)
  2. Eggplant in Garlic Sauce (Chinese)

(the family hates eggplant, except me, so we never eat it 🤔 )

ai6yr,

The reason for the extra eggplant in hydroponics is (theoretically), they will be diversionary eggplants for the squirrels, who decimate peppers but prefer to get high on eggplant leaves. (h/t @BakerRL75 for the idea, I believe). So may also have ZERO eggplants.

ai6yr,

@jkmcnk Hmm, sounds like that might be lunch, assuming I have any bread around here I can make a sandwich with...

ai6yr,

@deewani Oooh, that sounds interesting!

ai6yr,

@wendinoakland I think there may be one other person with a garden of any sort in this area, LOL. More farther away, but not in my corner of the world. There's a whole neighborhood nearby which is ONLY plastic grass and swimming pools, which I think is terrible.

ai6yr,

@stig Thanks!

ai6yr,

@meganL @wendinoakland Yep, precisely. The "car centric" upraising is extremely strong here in Southern California. Folks just are so used to driving everywhere, they drive to a shopping mall which is a replica of Europe (no bikes or skateboard allowed!) to not have to worry about being hit by a car walking "downtown". It's so bizarre, to me.

Removed captured swarm of bees from my backyard... So the "bee swarm showing up" clock gets reset. The question now is now long until the next swarm... 24 hours? 48 hours? Longer? (there does seem to be a bee swarm portal back there--thus, how we got into beekeeping).

ai6yr,

@darwinwoodka Multiple hives, for sure.... LOL.

I found treasure at the grocery last night!

ai6yr,

@dr_a Ah, yes, necessary ingredient also for making the Chinese dish Mapo Tofu (or Ma Po's Tofu in the Taiwanese cookbook I have).

sigh I've got a faint positive test today. So either I got it from my wife and mother in law who both had it last week or I picked it up while traveling.

I'm not feeling very bad. Just congested.

This is the first time I've had COVID as far as I'm aware since the start of the pandemic.

ai6yr,

@douglasvb Wow, two weeks with COVID and brain fog... that sucks.

ai6yr,

@douglasvb 😬
