Two more boxes of books donated to the library via bicycle. Must be 100 lbs in these two, decided against 3 boxes, which was a good choice.

My friend and colleague died of a brain tumor last week. I had been processing the news but the official work email arrived yesterday and I was suddenly awash in a deep sadness.

It is still lingering this morning.

ai6yr,

@cookiesinheaven Sorry for your loss.

LOL pledging to bike to work, school, or fun at least once to enter to win a gift card, and the site's "robot detector" insists I must click on photos of cars in order to enter. 😂

Orcas aren’t attacking boats — they’re just playful teens, scientists say - The Washington Post https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2024/05/25/killer-whale-boat-sinking-report/

ai6yr,

@Cristobalm All the cops I know blame most crime here on teenagers with nothing to do... (suburbs, so...)

Crow intelligence in action: the crows here will eat animals that have been visibly wounded/hit by cars/etc., but will NOT eat animals which do not have visible marks (ie potentially rat poisoned).

ai6yr,

@Crowjane 😂 Well, the crows here are MOST CERTAINLY NOT vegetarian LOL.

ai6yr,

@Laplantgenetics not good...

Hmm, they mention using pheromones and a swarm of bees as a "radical idea" to attack enemies for the military in "The Men Who Stare At Goats", LOL. (It would work, but you can't cart around beehives, really)

I’m Stoney Case of the west. Here to tell you we will not be saved by the Democratic Party. We need to to keep them in power just long enough for something that actually works for the people and the earth to take hold. They’re better than the facists and nazis, sure. But not gonna save us or the planet. They’re just grifters that want to share scraps and dangle rights as voting motivation. (1/2)

ai6yr,

@Stoneycase Is there a Stoney Case of the East? 🤪

Our oldest ended up in the hospital due to a broken leg. The nature of the break required stabilization for transport to the hospital, which could not have been accomplished in a car seat, so we called 911 to get an ambulance. Later transferred by another ambulance ride to a nearby pediatric hospital.

ai6yr,

@paulknightly @camless I was pleasantly surprised that when my dad was in a car accident, the helicopter ride cost is CAPPED in Utah. (remarkable, for a Red state), exactly for the reasons you state. EMS is now owned by private equity, and they rely on a lot of entry-level churn of workers to keep labor costs low and profits flowing to their shareholders and execs... perverse incentives.

ai6yr,
ai6yr,

@camless @paulknightly Yep, definitely seems like it. There's some grass roots efforts to fight that--here in our local county, there's a lot of talk and movement to re-integrate EMS into the fire service... especially due to underinvestment in services and high costs. A lot of privatization had to do with reducing pension costs here, but governments are unhappy with the ever increasing contract expense increases, where a monopoly EMS provider is able to threaten to pull service if counties don't pony up for higher rates to feed the maw of private equity (vs. increasing rates for labor and better service, the rates are going direct to the investors).

After getting back into bicycling, suddenly realize HOW MUCH of towns here in Southern California are built around cars, and getting cars from place to place (and not so much people). You're so blind to those design choices when you're in a car!

ai6yr,

@John I had no idea Irvine had so many bikeways!

Either I've ordered too many things from DXEngineering, or they've just given me too many stickers. Now- what to do with all of these?

ai6yr,

@bud_t @kc2ihx I'm about to move from a "no stickers on the car" person to "a lot of stickers on the car" person, LOL... (just an old Fire Explorer/Fire dept sticker and WatchDuty sticker now... but now I'm thinking of a Mastodon and ham radio one, LOL... none of my extended family will dare get in my car at that point).

ai6yr,

@bud_t @kc2ihx LOL I am replacing all the peeling paint with antennas and stickers 🤪 (seriously considering repainting things myself, LOL)

@BakerRL75 You can apply it for your WHOLE account, but not for an individual post, as far as I can tell.

Saw the aftermath of a friend's goat's encounter with a pair of mountain lions. It was NOT pretty. I guess I'm not going hiking around at night at their house, LOL.

ai6yr,

@mjausson The killing was quick and brutally efficient (they are cats), but the carcass and remains looks like a bloody axe murder was committed (I imagine, what housecats do to rodents/etc. but on a MUCH GRANDER scale).

ai6yr,

@ad6dm Unrelated, but make sure to set the Bluetooth passcode on your new SmartSolar MPPT, I determined mine was dangling open with a default password of "000000" so anyone could change the charging profile. (not that I expect anyone would, but...)
