"A team of researchers have built a vision implant with tiny electrodes the size of a neuron, seeking to help blind people see again."

The Next Web reports: "Initial tests in mice showed that the implant can effectively stimulate visual perception using only a small amount of electricity."

I have an question for those who have difficulty with and use .

  1. What is the best way to offer you text-to-speech in my video game? Should I build it in myself? Or should I somehow make the text available to external screen reading plugins you already have installed?

  2. What is the best way to enable text-to-speech? I'm trying to imagine how a blind person would find the toggle in a settings menu they can't see. The only way I can think of around that would be to enable it by default and have an option for users who don't want it to disable it at the beginning, but that sounds cumbersome. Is there a better middle option? Is there a commonly-used keyboard shortcut I can enable or something?

Will physicians better categorize X-ray and ECG images if given more time per image?

Medical residents and staff viewed 50-100 images for 175 milliseconds to 20 seconds.

Neither viewing time nor experience seemed to be strong predictors of true positive and false positive categorizations.

Authors admit, "All viewing times in both studies were likely too brief to represent clinical practice."

"Noise limits of event cameras" AKA event-based silicon retinas. A talk by Tobi Delbruck in Cambridge, UK, in March 25, 2024.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YY31GaiOkNM

The screenshot below features Patrick Lichtsteiner and his work on mimicking retinal circuits in the design of the dynamic vision sensor (DVS), an event-based camera where the log difference of light intensity at time t and t-1 is emitted (the event), rather than a typical camera frame. This has extraordinary implications for visual processing, data transfer bandwidth and data storage.

Hello fediverse, lil cry for help: I’m looking to speak to someone with vitelliform macular dystrophy caused vision loss, so I can ask about their experience with the onset of symptoms. I was diagnosed ~3 years ago and until recently hadn’t experienced symptoms, I believe I now am but would love to chat to others about their experiences. Compulsory masto disclaimer: I’m not looking for advice other than the specific ask above, thank you. Boosts much appreciated 💖

Street parking was already scarce in , New Jersey, when the death of an elderly pedestrian spurred city leaders to remove even more spaces in a bid to 👍end traffic fatalities.👍
For seven years now, the city of nearly 60,000 people has reported resounding success:
♦️Not a single automobile occupant, bicyclist or pedestrian has died in a traffic crash since January 2017♦️, elevating Hoboken as a national model for roadway safety.
Mayor Ravi Bhalla was a City Council member in 2015 when a van struck 89-year-old Agnes Accera as she crossed Washington Street in the bustling downtown business district. Bhalla didn’t know Accera but attended her wake and said her death inspired him to push for better safety.
“I felt it wasn’t acceptable,” Bhalla said. “Our seniors, who we owe the greatest duty of safety to, should be able to pass that street as safely as possible. For her to actually be killed was a trigger that we needed to take action.”
Bhalla became mayor in 2018 and the city fully committed to : 🔸a set of guidelines adopted by numerous cities, states and nations seeking to eliminate traffic deaths. 🔸
👉Proponents believe no accident is truly unavoidable and even want to do away with the word “accident” altogether when describing roadway fatalities.
originated the concept more than a quarter-century ago, and U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete touted Hoboken in 2022 when announcing his department would follow Vision Zero guidelines.
Major U.S. cities including , , , and , Oregon, have integrated aspects of the program into their safety plans,
including at least some form of , the term for the removal of parking spaces near intersections to improve visibility.

The other day I saw a post by someone recommending getting prescription glasses from a Chinese site, Vooglam.

My prescription is exorbitantly expensive in the US. And if I don't want to be wearing the equivalent of coke bottles on my eyes the progressive bifocal and polycarbonate lenses are a must, which adds up even more. Add in the photo-gray or brown and you get near a thousand dollars out of pocket for glasses from one of the US monopolies.

I had found a site that had a limited range of frames and wasn't in the monopoly so I could get glasses for between $200-300. On the Chinese site I got them for $128. The frame selection was mostly hideous to an old woman like myself but I did find a pair I liked well enough. I paid for the cheapest shipping too, so it will be a month before I get them. But at about 15% of what they'd cost at Lenscrafters, it's worth the wait.

I find it obscene that people that need glasses the most because of really poor vision can't affordably access them without all kinds of internet gymnastics.

I fucking hate with every fiber of my being.

They are books - with and 3D pages. If there are @edutooters here looking neat stuff for or folks — these are really cool.

I attach some images which don’t adequately show embossing.
