Beijing might see Congress' divest-or-ban TikTok bill "as a pretty substantial propaganda victory ... It would play into Beijing’s hands to say that the U.S. has been talking about free speech for a long time — and using that as a stick to beat China over its human rights record — but this illustrates that the U.S. is a hypocrite ... and that makes our actions more legitimate" https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/23/business/dealbook/tiktok-us-china.html

Members of Congress who voted for the TikTok divest-or-die bill last week "may own between $29 million and $126 million worth of stock in competing tech companies" https://gizmodo.com/politicians-who-voted-to-ban-tiktok-may-own-as-much-as-1851356203

allanb,

@taylorlorenz Look who opposes this bill. Trump, Musk, Marjorie Taylor Greene. And AOC, (who suffers from millennial self-interest)

All the wrong people are aligned to protect TikTok

allanb,
@allanb@mastodon.social avatar

@MisuseCase

75% of TikTok users are 18-34
AOC is 34, and is a Millennial.

Maybe I am not understanding your point

allanb,
@allanb@mastodon.social avatar
allanb,
@allanb@mastodon.social avatar

@MisuseCase The point I was making was an attempt to describe AOC's self interest in TikTok as being Millennial interest, and a conflict of interest (or representation, depending on how you want to look at it.)

I said nothing about lawns or getting off them

allanb,
@allanb@mastodon.social avatar

@MisuseCase

AOC may not have monetary interest in TikTok, but she has generational interest (her national constituents are largely Millennials and younger). TikTok is mostly an artifact of Millennials and younger.

The fact remains it is a spying platform, and has been used to put surveillance on journalists and others.

National security interests are being weighed against generational-centered social platforms, and one would expect her to object.

Despite Trump/MTG being in the same corner

allanb,
@allanb@mastodon.social avatar

@forthy42 @MisuseCase

The whole point of discussing this is an exercise in futility. People simply do not have enough information to judge for themselves, and there is some movement to declassify some persuasive intelligence that Congress was briefed on.

A good example of how headlines differ from stories. The difference is usually due to layout/headline writers being different from the reporter, and they either fail to read the story or "spice it up" by misrepresenting the contents.

Headline is:

"Divided Washington state to choose Biden or Trump: ‘Everything seems a mess right now’"

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/mar/12/washington-state-2024-primary-biden-trump

allanb,
@allanb@mastodon.social avatar

But the story doesn't convey that idea all.

The politically waffling anonymous stall holder with whom the reporter was talking and who seems not to be comfortable with immigration, isn't representative of the majority of people in the state.

As a rule, Eastern WA is more conservative in general, but it's a minority population and view.

Western WA, where most of the 7.7 million people live, is more tolerant of emigration than minority rural interests on the east and south side of the state.

allanb,
@allanb@mastodon.social avatar

All states in the US are divided on partisan lines. The headline seems to say that WA voters cannot decide between Trump and Biden, but nothing could be further from the truth.

It's simple. There is no 'mess' or FUD and Biden will easily win WA. That's why he never comes here to campaign. He already knows this.

allanb,
@allanb@mastodon.social avatar

And IMO

The X number of people threatening to withhold their vote as "a vote for their cause" are fundamentally misguided about American politics.

They can throw their votes away, but the nuance is that elections are about selecting the lesser of two evils.

I find it puzzling why people espousing the idea that 'not voting is civic responsibility' are for the most part emigrants or offspring of emigrants themselves (most people are in the US)

Knowing Trump's threats, it doesn't add up.

allanb,
@allanb@mastodon.social avatar

Trump's insatiable taste for deporting people and building walls seems like it would be an urgent call to 'vote for the other guy' if you wanted to have representative government.

Not voting is a vote for Trump, given the Democrats are in a defensive posture against a known cheater.

Knowing the scales of public sentiment have Republican thumbs over them this election (as in 2016), it makes pretty good sense to make your vote count rather than turning coat and running away from responsibility

@taylorlorenz Paywalls and copyright of large media institutions has a lot to do with people no longer being commonly socialized.

All the inexpensive ways to look outside your bubble that used to exist, were provided by well-equipped local media that have mostly evaporated.

The concept of community has shifted from being rooted in location to being distributed globally.

Social media lets find people who think alike, but has diminished connection to a common truth from the world at large.

What is happening is a kind of Apartheid.
