5️⃣ Here's the 5th installment of my series of posts highlighting key new features of the upcoming v256 release of systemd.

I am pretty sure all of you are well aware of the venerable "sudo" tool that is a key component of most Linux distributions since a long time. At the surface it's a tool that allows an unprivileged user to acquire privileges temporarily, from within their existing login sessions, for just one command, or maybe for a subshell.

"sudo" is very very useful, as it…

@sszuecs @pid_eins I think it's the switch that is called --background=. I don't think the thread described the different settings you can give to --background.

@pid_eins @sszuecs Next up, adding "--background=magenta" to my run0.rc. 😂

How do people handle in configurations?

I see sops-nix a lot, but it's generally used with SSH keys. But where do I get that SSH key from, and what if I lose it? Or what if I want to put my SSH key in Home Manager? Or what if I do a rebuild on another system that doesn't have that ssh key?

Can I just put a password in during a nixos-rebuild that'll decrypt my secret file(s)?

(I tried using sops with a gpg key on my Yubikey, but stumbled into an "Invalid Time" error that apparently me and 3 other people on Reddit have seen. But even if the key was safe on my Yubikey, it still doesn't solve the "rebuilding on another machine", because my Yubikey is on my desktop, not the VM, right?)

I think AI music generation has reached a similar level as AI image generation. Behold, "sad girl on piano sings the MIT license" as generated by suno dot ai:

@jimsalter I lost my shit when she whispers "the Software". Absolutely perfect.

@jimsalter Think you can convince Joe to put the chorus at the end of a 2.5 Admins? 🤣

Since it created such turmoil, the link to UnknownCheats has been removed from the disclaimer on kernel based anticheat games.

Instead, we are making it clear those games must be avoided at all cost. Don't compromise the security of your machine for some low quality F2P cash grab.

amanzer,
@amanzer@techhub.social avatar

@gamingonlinux @lutris Good job updating the message! Personally, I don't think it reads like a tantrum at all. I think the new message is much better, except for the sentence: "Those games being free to play, they rely on exploitative mechanics to incite gamers to purchase in-game content."

I get that you're trying to inform people and possibly influence them. But the rest of the warning is about security, which I think is the right tack. Mixing in the bit about F2P exploitation muddies the message. I think if you took that one sentence out, you'd improve it greatly. 🙂

Yeah, do not get tangled in the adventure of useless cat commands in your , , or machines. Use the grep command instead https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/howto-use-grep-command-in-linux-unix/ 👏

amanzer,
@amanzer@techhub.social avatar

@nixCraft cat pipe grep is a time-honored tradition of Sys admins looking for a setting in a file.

"Where's that setting?"
cat file
"WOW that file is long. I need a grep!"
//Up key, tack on | grep setting.

😁

I know that grep can do that, but it's the same reason I'll use -l username in an SSH command: I'm updating/modifying as I go.

    @psychicparrot42 Dang. 🙁

    I don't do Amazon as much as I'm able.

    I was really hoping that all those Disney+ press releases that said "Disney+ is the new home of Doctor Who!" meant that all the modern Who would be there too. Guess not. 🙁

    You can use Mastodon's filter system to automatically hide posts containing certain words or phrases or hashtags. The posts can either be hidden behind a warning, or just hidden completely.

    Although they're often used for hiding nasty material, filters can be used for any reason. Some people use filters to avoid spoilers of an upcoming film, others use them to filter out Wordle posts for example.

    Filters have lots of options, so I've done a complete guide at:

    ➡️ https://fedi.tips/filtering-your-timeline-to-hide-posts-on-mastodon/

    @feditips I love this feature!

    I like following hashtag StarTrek, but there are people who live-post syndicated episodes of Star Trek under the hashtag AllStarTrek too. I don't want to see those posts, but I don't want to unsubscribe from hashtag StarTrek, so I just filter posts containing the AllStarTrek tag. Works like a charm!

    Sigh. Every time you use zcat something.gz | BLAH, it'd be cool if zcat could point you to the error in your ways for the decades you didn't know zless existed for instance. I heard someone who wasn't me say. Just now. Defo wasn't me though.
