How many places do you back up your photos? I currently using iCloud, Google Drive and Amazon Photos because they are all set it and forget it and they are all part of subscriptions I have for other reasons anyway.

amerpie,
@amerpie@social.lol avatar

@greg The iPhone is the set it and forget it piece. Backing up DSLR pictures requires a little bit more intentionality. I don't back up my whole card every time, just my final picks and even then Google Drive has a size limit.

It's official! I'm now a proud participant in the IndieWeb! :pensive_party_blob:

Microformats, webmentions, feed, automatic backfeed from Mastodon... the whole package!

I just wished for clearer documentation.. figuring out how to interconnect the various pieces was quite a nightmare, but very simple once understood.

🥕 I was a very loyal user of Carrot Weather for many years. Like many, I
tried other apps. None stuck, until Mercury came along. Today it hit
me: I haven’t launched Carrot in a (very long) while. https://mercuryweather.app/

@maique I miss Dark Sky. I don't know why Apple bought and killed it without incorporating the hyperlocal functionality.

    My Threads account has pretty laid dormant since I created it, but I think I’ve found a use for it. To help explain what the Fediverse is to users on Threads that don’t understand it.

    I’m interested to see how everyone here would go about explaining what the Fediverse is?

    amerpie,
    @amerpie@social.lol avatar

    @EighthLayer The best explainer I've ever read was from David Pearce of The Verge - https://www.theverge.com/23990974/social-media-2023-fediverse-mastodon-threads-activitypub

    @EighthLayer As an idea, why don't you ask ChatGPT or Gemini to summarize it for you? You'll get a pretty good list of bullet points that way.

    At some point, someone decided that vacuum cleaners were an acceptable topic on tech websites, blogs and YouTube channels and ever since then there have been way too goddam many reviews of Roombas and their kind. This is not a good thing and it needs to stop.

    Don't tell me is too hard to learn. We started a new help desk person yesterday. I showed her how my notes about people and meetings work, demonstrated linking notes and talked about using dataview. Twenty minutes later she got the app installed. We downloaded a few crucial plugins, copied a few notes and templates from my vault and she was off. I gave her a link to @nicole 's YouTube channel and told her I'd answer any questions. Today she's at her desk, building a knowledge base.

    A lot of (mostly US based) Apple pundits seem to be very cranky about people having choice for what software they use. Taking the angle that ‘normal’ people would be so stupid and confused by being asked their preference is also incredibly patronising. Windows has asked for years and, somehow, the world hasn’t ended. https://daringfireball.net/linked/2024/03/06/ios-17-default-browser-nag

    amerpie,
    @amerpie@social.lol avatar

    @andyn As a late career IT support worker, I’m still angered by other tech folks who think the average Joe is stupid. It really perpetuates a stereotype of technically oriented folks as being assholes. Apple Tech pundits fit the bill sometimes.
