Twitter has plunged in value by 71.5% since Elon bought it.

@kfury I'm sure it has lost value but how can it be assessed so accurately now that it's not publicly traded?

I just saw that the AI conference NeurIPS has a call for machine learning papers from high school students.

It’s bad enough that folks applying to PhD programs are being told they have to have already published in order to be admitted into a good program. Are we now creating even more pathways just for students who are exceptionally privileged? Imagine having the opportunity to write and publish a paper in a major AI conference in high school

andresmh,
@andresmh@hci.social avatar

@cfiesler, just yesterday, I had a high schooler's CV in my mailbox asking for research opportunities. It's not the first one, plus Princeton is in the middle of nowhere 😬

Woah! Someone posted the 1 billionth Scratch project online:
https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/1000000000

The Scratch online community has come a long way since it started as a master's thesis project!

Here is one of the first mock-ups of the website I did around 2005, inspired Flickr and some other "web 2.0" websites of that era

@gadgetoid the first 103 projects were tests i deleted, then the 104th is a greeting card i made for my girlfriend (now wife) 🥰 https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/104

@pg right? 🙈Today it would have been Scratch.ai. I skipped the scratch.ly and scratch.io era

Last Fall, a few of us attended a CRA workshop in DC to discuss the future of research on social tech. Here is a report about it that includes topics ranging from governance to decentralization to the role of academia, and more https://cra.org/ccc/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2023/04/CCC-Future-of-Research-Workshop-Report_Final.pdf

Check it out!

(1/N) Looking for extra(outside)-Georgia Tech CS faculty perspectives:

I work with several talented GT undergrads, many of whom can graduate BS CS in 3 years, due to AP courses and (relatively) small core curriculum. Would potential PhD advisors hesitate to take a 3 (vs 4 year) straight BS --> PhD student?

With 1 more year they can get a MSc CS, which I've been encouraging them to do, due to my own bias towards having more time to explore intellectually

andresmh,
@andresmh@hci.social avatar

@annabelrothschild PhD admission heavily depends on prior research experience and letters of recommendation. Assuming they are strong at both, the only concern might be emotional and intellectual maturity, but I’m not sure a year would make a huge difference

andresmh,
@andresmh@hci.social avatar

@annabelrothschild having a publication would be a huge plus

The eclipse was amazing. It reminded me of skydiving: a lot of preparation for a few minutes of awe. Totally worth the 4 hours stuck in traffic in Arkansas.

The main tip I learned online is to not waste time trying to take a good picture during totality. So I just took this one photo which shows some stars. But it’s one of those things that there are millions of better photos, so just enjoy the four minutes!

In honor of discovering that I've apparently had a Wikipedia page for a few months, I decided to tell the story of why I'm not a Wikipedian (a story I told Jimmy Wales lol) and this seems like the kind of thing that might interest you all: https://www.instagram.com/p/C5i1r68Lyk-/

Though TL;DR if you don't want to watch a four minute video, my attempt to increase coverage of children's literature on Wikipedia was met with exactly the kinds of gatekeeping acrimonious jerk behavior you might expect.

Starts with a wave of eerie self published promotional videos like this: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZPRTqkuh2/

wow… $100,000/year college is right around the corner. CMU isn't quite there, and lots of students don't pay the full price… but $86k?

@jbigham If I were in the US and about to go to college now, I would seriously consider going abroad.

I had an American friend in college who transferred to our school in Mexico. I thought it was a mistake. Everyone’s dream was to go to college in the US! But now, I think it was a smart choice.

He lived very comfortably in Mexico and even went to a study abroad program in France. He’s now an engineering manager at a FAANG in California.

andresmh,
@andresmh@hci.social avatar

@jbigham that's the way to do it! Also, some of the Ivys are now free for families earning less than 100K, which is great. I wouldn't have been accepted since I didn't even speak English, but I would have definitely qualified.

andresmh,
@andresmh@hci.social avatar

@marcua @marielgm good question. I could see the argument of being ok to do event detection relying on instance opt-in. In fact, I think the current "trending now" section does not even have any sort of opt-in.

Searching might be problematic, but event detection seems less so!
